Chapter 3

Author: Wendy Gill
I kept eating calmly and refused Finn's and Yvonne's kindness.

I said, "Thank you, but I'm happy with my job. I'm not planning to switch."

A former classmate chimed in, "Sylvia, why aren't you grateful? Finn and Yvonne are kind-hearted. They're giving you money and a job. Take it!"

"Right. Your life's already tough. What pride do you even have left? You showed up just to grab resources, didn't you? Stop pretending!"

Yvonne plastered on an insincere smile. "Guys, don't say that! Maybe Sylvia really loves her current job!"

She turned to me and said, "Sylvia, we're offering this because of our past friendship. Don't miss out on this opportunity just because of your pride!"

I honestly had no idea why they kept trying to pressure me into accepting money and job offers.

I insisted, "I really don't need it. Thanks."

Yvonne's smile stayed gentle, yet her eyes were full of mockery and disdain.

Finn gripped the check and sneered. "Useless! We're trying to give you a hand, and you still won't take the chance! Stay poor forever!"

Right after that jab, a group of guys rushed over and tried to make me drink.

"Sylvia, you look so pitiful. Take one shot and I'll transfer you a thousand dollars."

"If you really need money, I can pay you even more!"

They were ogling me. The others laughed, and no one came to my aid.

I frowned. This class reunion was nothing like I had pictured. If I weren't waiting for someone, I'd have walked out already.

I was about to call security when Finn crushed his cigarette and grabbed the arm of the man hassling me. His eyes were cold and full of anger. "Back off."

The man's hand hurt so badly that he howled.

Yvonne tugged at Finn's sleeve and asked, "Finn, what are you doing?"

His expression remained cold. "I'm stepping in. This is a class reunion, not a place for you to do whatever you want."

With that, he flung the man away. The guy didn't dare argue, but he shot me a vicious glare.

I couldn't help looking at Finn. I hadn't expected him to help me.

Yvonne almost ground her teeth to dust, but she still forced a smile. "I heard that the heir and CEO of Crestford Group are meeting upstairs. Maybe we'll get lucky and catch a glimpse of the wealthiest man in Abgate City!"

The faces of my former classmates lit up at once.

The wealthiest man in Abgate City was young and handsome. He was just over 30 years old and already had a five-year-old son. Yet, no one had ever seen his wife.

"So we might see his wife today? I have to post that on TikTok!"

"We might be the first ones to catch a glimpse of her!"

Soon, a line of bodyguards escorted a young boy into the hall. The crowd buzzed with excitement.

"That boy must be the son of Abgate City's wealthiest man! He's really good-looking!"

The guy who had teased me earlier hadn't dared to say a single word when Finn hit him, but now he was spouting nonsense in front of me.

"Sylvia, if Yvonne hadn't booked this place, a nobody like you would never have had the chance to see the son of the wealthiest man in Abgate City.

"If I were you, I'd be kneeling right now to thank her. You might even land a good job and marry a guy like me. You know, I make six grand a month."

Idiot!

I ignored him and turned to look at the boy.

Everyone rushed over to the boy with fawning smiles. They pulled out their phones, eager to take pictures and videos with him.

Even the usually arrogant Yvonne came over, putting on a warm, friendly act for the boy. "Hello! What would you like to eat? It's on me."

She tried to pinch his cheek.

But a second later, the boy ignored everyone and walked straight toward me. No one saw that coming.

He smiled sweetly and threw himself into my arms before saying, "Mom, you're finally here."

"I hope he'll accept treatment and stop disturbing me," I firmly said.Finn's elderly parents nodded, their faces conveying an apologetic look.Soon after, Finn transferred to another hospital and never contacted me again....The next news about Finn came from his mother."Sylvia, Finn is fading fast. He wants to see you one last time. Will you come?"I stayed silent for a long while. Eventually, I answered in a hoarse voice, "Alright." Then, I hung up.For a second, I tried to recall the moments when Finn and I loved each other in our past life. But no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't remember anything. Time really could erase everything. When I saw Finn again, he was just skin and bones. His cheekbones jutted out, making him unrecognizable. He stared blankly out the window. Only when I stepped into the room did light fill his eyes. He looked at his body and gave a bitter laugh. "Sylvia, I must be awful to look at now."I said nothing. He went on, "I'm sorry. I used to

I said, "Marrying you in our last life was my biggest regret. I don't love you anymore. I don't want a child with you. Stop living in the past. I'm never going back there."Finn froze, hurt evident on his face.I didn't care about his feelings at all. I simply turned and left the room.He shouted after me, "All men are the same! Do you really think that Damien cares about you? Why would the wealthiest man in Abgate City want an ordinary woman?"Wake up! You two can't be happy! I'm the one who suits you the best!"Fed up, I walked faster. He hadn't changed at all from his last life. When things went well, he looked down on those doing worse. When things went badly, he envied those who were better off and tried to bring them down. People like that were always regretting and never satisfied.Everyone said that I married Damien to climb the social ladder. However, I felt that he and I were equals in this love.Finn saw me as an ordinary doctor. He had no idea about the breakthrough

Damien, looking a little aggrieved, said, "Honey, don't lump me in. I do have a conscience."I couldn't help but laugh when I heard this.Damien had always focused on creating the best-value products.Every brand, hotel, and real-estate project under his name used top-grade materials and sold at the lowest possible price. That was why his company continued to grow and his reputation continued to rise.If one respected consumers, they would earn their respect in return.Martin, on the other hand, cut corners to pocket the savings, risking people's lives. That was downright heartless. Not long afterward, I got a call from an unlisted number. I hesitated before answering.Finn's voice came through the phone. "Did you see the news? Sylvia, I was the one who reported him."I frowned, unsure of why he was telling me. "Well, thanks on behalf of the public."Finn sounded weak as he asked, "Sylvia, may I see you?"I answered firmly, "I told you before that I've moved on. You don't nee

I said, "Whether we broke up in our past lives or this one, isn't it better for us to have no ties? Besides, last time you regretted being with me and didn't want kids. I couldn't accept that life."Finn shouted in anger. "I regretted it because you never supported me! You emailed the music publishers and told them not to accept my songs!"I was baffled. "What are you talking about? I never sent any emails. At that time, I worked three jobs to support your dream of pursuing a music career. I never had time for that nonsense. I had wished for your success more than anyone else. Didn't you feel that?"Finn froze in shock, as if he had been struck by lightning. He covered his mouth, unable to accept the truth, and kept questioning me. "Then why didn't you buy me a guitar back then?"At that moment, I understood what he hadn't finished saying earlier in the banquet hall."Did you think we still had money? Your dad was sick, and your family spent every penny on medical bills. Aside fro

It took only a few minutes for the situation to change."Who would have thought that Sylvia would marry the wealthiest man of Abgate City? Finn just tried to give her a check. It looks ridiculous now!""Yeah. He thought she was doing badly. But it turns out, she found someone even better.""Didn't Yvonne offer her a nail tech job? I just heard that Sylvia is the lead surgeon at Abgate Central Hospital. She's one of the best. She doesn't need anyone lining up work for her. What a joke!""Sylvia, getting married is a big deal! Why didn't you tell us? We would've gotten you a big wedding gift!"I watched as former classmates who had ignored me moments ago started to act chummy. I found it funny, but I maintained basic courtesy. The class reunion wasn't over yet, but I was already bored. So, Damien and I took our son and left early. The moment we stepped out of Crestford Grand Hotel, someone called out, "Sylvia!"Finn chased after me and called out for me to stop.I asked Damien t

The young boy, who had looked cold and distant just moments ago, suddenly looked pitiful, as if he wanted me to coax him. He whined, "Why didn't you come home yesterday? I missed you so much."I hugged my son and soothed him quietly. "I was at work. I told you when I left. Tomorrow's my day off. I'll take you out, okay?"Ryan Cooper nodded eagerly and said, "Okay. Mom, you're the best."All my old classmates were stunned to see this. They stared at me in disbelief. Before they could ask any questions, a handsome man in a suit came down from the conference room upstairs."Honey, the hotel manager said you were at your class reunion. Why didn't you text me when you got off work? I'd have driven over."The hotel manager stood by and introduced the man to the speechless crowd."This is Mr. Damien Cooper, CEO of Crestford Group, and Ms. Sylvia Carter's husband. If you need anything while you're eating, please let me know. We'll do our best to ensure that Mrs. Cooper's classmates feel

Yvonne was clad in high-end brands, her makeup flawless and her hair immaculately styled. Every move she made carried the effortless grace of a wealthy lady.I had just left the operating room. I hadn't slept for almost 24 hours, and I looked like I had lost my soul.I wore the most comfortable tracksuit from an unbranded brand, bought from a small street shop. I couldn't compare to her at all."No, thanks. I don't need your makeup right now," I answered. With that, I took a seat and started eating. After performing intense surgeries, I hadn't eaten all day. While I savored the food, Finn suddenly walked over and laid a check for a hundred thousand dollars in front of me."This money is for the sake of what we once had. I just want to help you. Treat yourself better. Find a more respectable job. Buy some new clothes, and learn to love yourself."Sylvia, the past is already past. Don't drown in it. If it weren't for you... Forget it. That doesn't matter."What matters is that yo

I met Finn Dawson again at our class reunion seven years later.I had just completed several operations. I was so tired that I didn't feel like changing, so I walked straight into the banquet hall.Finn stood in the middle of the crowd with his arm around Yvonne Gray's waist and enjoyed the praise that kept coming his way."Finn, you're incredible! After just a few years on Wallon Street in Harbor City, you've already become the most promising trader! You're the pride of Abgate High School!""Exactly! I heard that the big shots on Wallon Street even treated Finn to dinner. They paid him hundreds of thousands just in consulting fees. That's more than a whole year's salary for ordinary people like us!""Finn, I've been dabbling in stocks too. Could you share a few inside tips and help me make some money?"Someone in the crowd grew curious and asked, "Finn, are you and Yvonne getting engaged?"Finn looked down at Yvonne in his arms with gentle eyes. He said, "Yeah, we're getting en
