The gunshot echoed through the office.

The recoil slammed into Iris's arms, forcing her a step backward.

Her ears rang. For a split second, she couldn't see through the cloud of smoke curling from the muzzle.

When it cleared she gasped.

Cassian was no longer standing where he had been.

The bullet had punched a neat hole into the wooden wall behind him.

He stood a few feet to the side, one hand still tucked into the pocket of his black trousers. His expression hadn't changed even a bit.

It was as though the gunshot had been nothing more than a door closing.

Iris stared at him."...How?"

Cassian ignored the question. Instead, his gaze drifted to the hole in the wall.

"Your aim was off."

She lowered the gun, disbelief replacing every other emotion.

"I shot at you."

"I know."

""You..." Her voice shook. "You moved."

Her pulse hammered in her ears.

She had barely pulled the trigger.

How had he crossed that distance before the bullet reached him?.That was a matter of seconds and he dodged the bullet that fast.

"I did."

"I could've killed you."

His gaze settled on hers. "No."

The certainty in his voice irritated her more than anything.

"You sound awfully confident."

"I am."

He pushed himself away from the wall and walked toward her with slow, measured steps.

Every instinct screamed at Iris to step back but she didn't.

He stopped right in front of her.

"Your shoulders tensed before you fired."

His fingers tapped the barrel of the pistol.

"You tightened your grip too early."

He lightly nudged the weapon downward.

"And you anticipated the recoil."

Her brows furrowed.

"What does that even mean?"

"It means..." His voice remained calm. "...you were more afraid of the gun than of me."

Her jaw tightened. Her left eye twitched.

"I'm not afraid of you."

"No?"

His eyes searched hers for a long moment."Then why did you hesitate?"

She went quiet. She opened her mouth to utter something but nothing came out.

Because he was right.

There had been a moment...a tiny moment before she pulled the trigger where she'd wondered if pulling it would somehow make everything worse.

Cassian took the pistol from her hands effortlessly.

"If your intention was to kill me," he said, removing the magazine and checking the chamber, "you should've fired the moment I handed you the weapon."

The metallic click echoed through the room.

He placed the unloaded pistol back on the table.

"You ask too many questions."

"I deserve answers." She stared at him her breath slowly calming.

"You deserve nothing."His words were cold.

He turned toward the door.

"So that's it?" Iris called after him. "You bring me here, make me shoot at you, then you leave?"

His hand rested on the doorknob.

"You wanted to know how you'll repay your father's debt."

He looked at her over his shoulder."This..."

His gaze flicked briefly to the pistol. "...is only the beginning."

Without another word, he opened the door. A guard waiting outside straightened immediately.

"Prepare the training room," Cassian ordered.

The huge guard nodded once. "Yes, sir."

The door closed behind him.

Iris remained rooted to the spot, staring at the gun lying on the table.

A cold realization settled over her.

This man was more like unraveling a puzzle. He didn't want her to kill him, he wanted to teach her, in his own fu**** up way.

"We need to talk about the night you were born." Iris stared at him. For a moment, she genuinely wondered if she'd heard him correctly. "My birth?" Cassian stared at her blankly. She looked down at the small piece of metal sitting in her palm. The serpent wrapped around the heart. Then back at him. "You've known about this." "I've known things." Her eyes narrowed. "That's not the same answer." "It is the only one you're getting right now." She scoffed. "Of course." She turned away from him. Five years. Five years of being in this man's house. Five years of following his rules. Five years of being told just enough to keep her alive and never enough to understand why. And apparently... it had all started before she could even remember. "Why didn't you tell me?" Cassian remained silent. She turned back. "Look at me." His eyes lifted to hers. Something about the way he looked at her made her confidence falter for half a second. Not because he was frighteni

Iris didn't sleep eyes stared half closed at the ceiling. Every time her eyes closed, the same thing happened. Darkness. Then—white. Her eyes snapped open again. She stared at the ceiling. Her breathing was slow. Controlled. She had learned how to control her breathing years ago. Inhale. Hold. Exhale. Again. She closed her eyes. Nothing happened. For a few seconds... nothing. Then—a sound. A faint beeping. Beep. Beep. Beep. Her body went completely still. She didn't know that sound. At least... she didn't think she did. Beep. Beep. Beep. Suddenly, the darkness behind her eyelids changed. White walls. Too bright. A ceiling light burning directly above her. Her head felt heavy. Her body felt strangely small. She tried to move. Nothing. A voice came from somewhere beside her. "She's awake." Iris's eyes flew open. She sat upright so quickly the room spun. Her hand pressed against her chest. Her heart was pounding. "No..." She looked around her bedroom. Nothing.

The room had emptied.Only two guards remained near the door while the technicians continued working at the computers. But the chaos from earlier had faded into something worse.Silence.Iris sat on the edge of a chair, staring at the floor.Someone was looking for me.The words she'd spoken still echoed in her head. She didn't know why she'd said them. She didn't know where the thought had come from. It had simply appeared. Like a memory she'd forgotten she had.Her fingers slowly tightened around the fabric of her trousers. She hated that feeling. Not knowing. Not understanding. For five years, she'd trained herself to remember everything. Every face. Every exit. Every weapon. Every lesson Cassian had forced into her head. Nothing was supposed to slip past her.Yet somehow... a symbol had. A voice had. And now a silhouette."You're thinking too loudly."Iris looked up.Cassian stood near the window. His jacket was gone, leaving him in the same dark shirt he'd worn during the attack.

The room was too quiet. Just the beeping. Soft. Rhythmic. The only proof the monitors were still alive. Iris stood near the doorway, arms crossed, watching. Cassian hadn't moved in almost a minute. Not even when another monitor flickered and went black. The men around him kept working. Low voices. Tight voices. "Firewall's holding on the eastern servers." "We've isolated the breach." "Not completely." "Then isolate it completely." Cassian's voice. Calm. Too calm. He should be angry. He should be something. But he wasn't. He just stood there, staring at the screens like they owed him answers. Iris shifted her weight. Her legs ached. Her wrist was still sore from where he'd grabbed her. She could still feel his fingers there. Like a brand. What are we still doing here? The mansion had been attacked. People were hurt. Maybe dead. Someone had ripped through Cassian's security like it was nothing. And he looked... irritated. Like someone had interrupted his dinner. Not t

Cassian's grip never loosened around her wrist. He pulled her through the smoke-filled hallway. His strides were long — she stumbled twice just trying to keep up. The floor was slick with something she didn't want to identify.Guards rushed past them so fast that their faces blurred. "Medic!""Secure the west corridor!""We've lost contact with Team Three!"Smoke curled into her nose. She tasted ash at the back of her throat. Her eyes watered and her lungs burned with every breath. She coughed. A wet, hacking sound.Despite her vigorously coughing by his side Cassian didn't stop.‘Where are we going?’‘What is happening?’He didn't answer the questions she couldn't ask out loud.He just shoved open a pair of heavy steel doors.
