Karen arrived at the lab with her nerves on edge. Her hands were sweaty, her heart was beating wildly, as if trying to escape through her throat. Sebastian drove silently beside her, a heavy, tense silence since the incident with Peter. He barely looked at her during the entire trip.

Richard was waiting for them at the entrance, adjusting his glasses and offering a reassuring smile.

“Everything is fine. The room is private, as promised.”

Before Karen could respond, a nurse appeared at the door,

Karen wasn’t religious, even though she grew up in an orphanage run by nuns, but in some situations she prayed. She prayed as a child, asking to be adopted by a loving family. Then she prayed that Mrs. Malcolm wouldn’t find out that she was the one who ate all the chocolate cake frosting. She prayed when she was kidnapped and locked in that dark room. And she was praying at that very moment.“Give me the strength to face the truth,” she whispered softly, her hands clasped tightly together. She got up and went to the kitchen and asked the driver to wait for her in the car.“Take me to Sunrise Hospital.”The driver looked in the rearview mirror, surprised.“The hospital, ma’am?”He discreetly wiped the sweat from his hands.“I’m going to visit Peter’s girlfriend, Lindsay.” Karen tried to sound casual. “We’re practically family.”“I’ll have to let Mr. Sterling know,” the driver said cautiously.“No need to bother him with that,” Karen replied firmly. “It’s just a courtesy visit. Sebastian tried not to think. He tried to clear his mind of Peter, Lindsay, Karen, and the money, the damn kiss. But the more he tried, the more these thoughts persisted, returning like relentless waves. When he realized it, he was already crossing the lobby of his father’s casino. He walked right past the security guards, ignored the secretary who tried to stop him, and entered the office without being announced and without knocking on the door.Marcus was sitting behind the enormous desk, immersed in a pile of contracts, his pen sliding with almost mechanical precision.Without looking up, he asked, “What do you want, Sebastian?”Sebastian took a deep breath, feeling impatience rise in his throat.“Do you already know what happened?”His father turned a page, unperturbed. “You need to be more specific.”Sebastian clenched his teeth.“Do you know who kidnapped my wife?”This time, Marcus finally looked up. Raising his eyebrow was the only sign of interest he offered.“Sebastian, if I

He barely looked at her during the entire trip.Richard was waiting for them at the entrance, adjusting his glasses and offering a reassuring smile.“Everything is fine. The room is private, as promised.”Before Karen could respond, a nurse appeared at the door, professional and cordial.“Ms. Karen Sterling? Please come with me.”The room was cold and sterile: the smell of alcohol, surfaces gleaming under fluorescent lights, everything so clean it seemed hostile.“Relax,” the nurse said, noticing the tension in Karen’s shoulders. “It’s quick and painless.”She inserted the sterile swab into Karen’s mouth, scraping the inside of her cheek with mechanical precision.Karen closed her eyes, trying not to get lost in her own questions. She tried not to thin

Karen was restless, pacing back and forth as she checked her watch for the tenth time in less than a minute. With each passing second, it seemed as if time was dragging on with cruel intent. She wanted answers; she needed them, and that afternoon’s exam was one more step toward the truth that consumed her.“Mrs. Sterling, you have visitors,” announced the butler at the door, with his usual impeccable posture.Karen frowned. “Who?”“Mr. Peter Sterling,” he replied with all his trained politeness... but that did not soften the impact of the name. The world frozen.A wave of panic washed over her, so fast and violent that her hands began to sweat. Her heart raced out of rhythm.“Call security and notify Sebastian. Now.”The butler made a move to leave immediately, but a voice echoed down the hallway before he could take his first step.“No need to call anyone. I won’t hurt you.”Peter 's voice.Karen turned around, fear written all over her face. She took an involuntary step back, as if

  • Lucky in Love   Chapter 58: The Glass, the Ride, and the Lie

Richard and Karen made small talk in the dining room while they waited for Sebastian to wake up. The morning was too quiet for that enormous house, too quiet for Karen, who couldn’t stop thinking about the cemetery, the rain, the kiss, her dead mother.Richard watched her with restrained, almost clinical interest.“These must be hard days for you,” he said at last, studying every nuance of her face, as if analyzing an important testimony.“Surprising, I would say.” Karen fidgeted with her napkin, restless. “So many things happened at once that I’m still trying to process them.”“You’re a very brave girl.”A small, almost shy smile appeared on her lips.“Any clues as to who kidnapped me?” she asked cautiously, like someone who knows they’re walking on thin ice.“Nothing,” Richard lied with professional smoothness, his tone so natural that it was impossible to suspect anything.Karen sighed in frustration.“I don’t understand why Sebastian doesn’t want me to go to the police station. It

Karen was in shock, but not because of what had happened, but because of how she felt. The sensation of Sebastian’s lips touching hers was like touching a piece of heaven. Warm and intense. Impossible to ignore. She tried to convince herself that she had acted on impulse, motivated by vulnerability. That it was the moment, the rain, the pain, but she knew it was a lie.“I’m sorry,” he said, pulling away abruptly, his hands still shaking on the steering wheel.Karen didn’t answer, unable to utter a single word. She stared ahead at the thick rain streaming down the window, each drop seeming to take a piece of her sanity with it.He tried to start the car again. This time the engine worked. Sebastian used his peripheral vision to watch Karen, who in turn pretended not to notice. The silence between them was awkward, heavy with unspoken words. When they arrived in front of the house, she got out of the car running, climbed the stairs, and locked herself in her room, finally letting out th
