(Kathryn’s POV) I left the packhouse, I wanted to be as far away from everyone that I could. No one got in my way or tried to stop me. I just wanted to go home to my house where I could be left alone to think. I was still in my workout clothes so I took off running through the woods. It was still light out so I didn’t have any trouble finding my way through the trees. I was surprised that I didn't see anyone in the woods, but I could sense that I was being watched. Damn the mind-link, Tyler probably knew where I was and he was having me followed. I was such a fool, how could I let my guard down so much that I would even believe that I could be happy with this life. Tears started to run down my cheeks and I picked up my pace. I wanted to climb into my own bed. I plan on staying there for the next three days. Damn, Scott is coming tomorrow. I couldn’t deal with him, he would want to confront Tyler for making me upset. Maybe I could just not tell him and go with him in the truck for a while. I could use a few days or weeks away from all this drama. I saw the light from the back porch up ahead. Still no one stopped me. I didn’t see one wolf, or any other animal during my run, it was very strange, but then I was on my land and I was told that no wolves were allowed on my land. Except Sherry, I saw her standing in the doorway once I stepped in the backyard. “Good evening, Luna,” Sherry said. “Good evening,” I replied. “I am going to my bedroom, I really don’t want to be bothered by anyone.” I kept walking before she could say a word. I went straight upstairs and slammed the door shut. ***** (Tyler’s POV) I went straight outside and looked around, she couldn’t have gone far. I could feel her so she had to be close but I couldn’t tell in what direction. I roared with frustration. I then calmed down to let Goliath take over to track her. He sniffed the air and picked up her scent instantly. She was heading toward her home. I mind-linked the night watch to see if they had seen her. It was about thirty seconds before I got a response. The watch had found her running through the woods. They were keeping their distance but they were following her to keep her safe from anyone else who might mean her any harm. I started pacing back and forth. Camerin just stood there watching me. I mind-linked Sherry to let her know that Kate was heading her way so she wouldn’t be surprised by the visit. “Well Kate is going home,” I said. “What are you going to do?” Camerin asked. “I will give her some time to cool off, then I’m going to get into my truck and drive over there. It’s time that we have a talk,” I said as I stopped pacing. “She made it home.” I walked back into the packhouse, I needed to get my keys. ***** Two hours was long enough, I couldn’t wait anymore. I got in my truck and drove over to Kate’s house. Sherry met me outside and told me that Kate was in her room at the top of the stairs and that she didn’t want to be disturbed by anyone. I told her to go back home for the night and I would take over watching Kate. Sherry got into her car and drove away. I walked into the house. I looked around and it still looked like Leslie still lived there. Kate didn’t have much in the way of her own furniture. I moved quietly up the stairs, not wanting to disturb her. My heart ached when I heard her crying. “I know you're there, Tyler,” she said as she blew her nose. I opened the door and saw her laying on the bed. Her back was to me. She made no attempt to roll over and face me. “Someone tells you that there is a death threat on your life and the first thing you do is run into the woods? Not a smart move,” I told her. “Did you come here to just argue with me?” she asked then sighed. “Go home Tyler.” “I’m not going anywhere, we need to talk,” I told her. “It’s over, I’m bringing you nothing but trouble. We need to break up,” she started to cry again. Goliath howled in my head and my heart felt like it was stabbed with a knife. “You’re not trouble or a burden on me. I’m not going to let you go so easily. How can you throw away everything we have?” “I am human, I don’t belong in your world. You have to defend our relationship and I have to prove everyday that I didn’t destroy you as their alpha. I am going to move away from here and you and Jaxson can fight over the land without me in the middle.” “Listen to me, I don’t have to defend our relationship to anyone anymore. Carson came here to see if I was weak because of marking a human, but since he met you, he realized that you made me stronger. You have shown the warriors that you could beat any of them in a fight. You have nothing else to prove.” I tried to justify everything to her. She said nothing. I walked over to her and sat on the bed next to her. I brushed the back of my hand across her cheek. “Are you willing to give up a skin on skin touch? You have friends that know you and care about you. They even know your secret and don’t care about it.” she rolled over for the first time and looked at me. I kissed her passionately on the lips. Then I kissed and nipped her mark. It sent an orgasmic sensation through her. “I’m not willing to give you up so easily. You’re my mate, you make me a better person,” I added before I kissed her again. “What about Jaxson’s death threat?” “Let me deal with Jaxson. I should have taken care of him long ago.” I tried to put her mind at ease, “You have a pack full of people that care about you and will make sure that you will be safe from any harm. All I ask is you please trust me, I will take care of everything.” She sat up in bed and wiped away her tears. “Let me change my clothes then we can head back to the packhouse,” she tried to walk away. I grabbed her by the hand and pulled her back on the bed. “We don’t need to go back, we can stay here tonight,” I said. “What about your security team?” she asked. “They are around to keep us safe. All you need to worry about is how much fun you are going to have tomorrow when your friend arrives,” I kissed her on the cheek. She smiled, “You have to promise me that you’re not going to growl at him.” I chuckled, “I can’t make that promise, but I will do my best to try and not to.” I sniffed the sheets, “Could you at least tell me whose scent is this on your bed sheets?” “Uhm, it is not what you think, Scott helped me move in and there was no place for him to sleep. That’s all we did,” she tried to explain. “What kind of relationship do you have with Scott?” “We used to be a couple, but believe me, it was a very long time ago. It was a mutual breakup and we have remained friends ever since.” I smiled, “Alright, I believe you.” I handed her the sheet. “Could we change the sheets on the bed? I would rather just smell your scent then a scent mixed with his.” She actually giggled and went to get a new set of bed coverings. I walked out on the balcony and checked out the scenery. I was surprised by the view, it was beautiful. I could even see the lake. No wonder she would come out on the balcony all the time. “I changed the bed, are you happy now?” she said as she walked up next to me. I wrapped my arms around her waist and breathed in her scent. “Now I’m happy,” I kissed the top of her head. She looked around, “I thought you said your security team was here.” “They’re here, just in the shadows to give us some privacy.” I led her back into the room and over by the bed. I wickedly smiled at her, “Let’s go out for dinner and then come back here for the night.” “You really will come back here?” She seemed to like the idea. “Of course, we need to give the bed a new scent,” I chuckled. “Mmm, then could we have takeout food instead?” Kate smiled back, “I’m not sure I can’t wait for dessert.” “Dessert, hmm?” I questioned her. She leaned over and kissed me on the lips then nipped my mark. I growled, “Chinese food, I know a place that will have it waiting for us when we get there.” We quickly moved to get the food.53 (Kathryn’s POV) I heard him before I saw him heavy boots on the old wooden floors, the faint creak of the front door shutting behind him. Cali lifted her head from my lap, ears perked like she could sense his energy better than I could. I wished I could curl up and disappear into her fur. The packhouse was quiet. Too quiet. Everyone had gone to handle something, fight something, protect something. And me? I sat here like a porcelain doll tucked safely away in a glass cabinet while the world burned. I didn’t know how to look at him. Not after tonight. Not after seeing what his world really was. He stepped into the dayroom. He looked… tired. Older somehow. Blood scrubbed mostly clean, but not all of it. I wondered if it was his. If it was someone else’s. If he even cared anymore. “Hey,” he said softly, like he didn’t want to scare me. I didn’t answer. I just watched him. His shoulders dropped a fraction that little tell he hated giving away, like he’d been bracing for a punch
52 (Kathryn’s POV) This night was more than I could handle. I have entered into Tyler’s world without knowing what it really was like. This world is full of monsters and I am in love with the most powerful one. I sit in this truck and am afraid to talk to him. He isn’t done, a war had just begun and he had prisoners, who knows what he was going to do with them. I glanced at him. Staring at his fresh scars and the dried blood on him. Why is he here with me and not with his men? Shouldn’t he be there? Was I really that important to him? Would he give up his world for me? Could I even ask him to? My mind was filled with so many questions. But I wondered why I couldn’t ask him. The truck started to slow down as we reached my home. The fire department was still there, spotlights all over the place. Smoke still poured out of the kitchen window, I expected the house to be burnt to the ground with nothing left but a pile of ash. A tall muscular man walked over to us, “Evening Alpha, Lu
51 (Tyler’s POV) I shifted back at the edge of the clearing behind the packhouse, forcing my breathing to steady. My fur was matted with blood, not all mine, but it didn’t matter. I had to look human again, look like her mate, not the monster who’d just torn Jaxson’s wolves apart with his teeth. I pulled on the spare pair of sweats we kept in the emergency stash outside the back porch. They stuck to the cuts along my ribs, but I ignored it. The packhouse lights glowed warm and steady, a lie against the chaos beyond these walls. When I stepped inside, I found Kate in the dayroom where I’d left her. She was pacing, arms wrapped tight around herself, Micah hovering nearby trying to calm her down. The moment Kate saw me, she stopped cold. Her eyes flicked over me, the blood, the bruises and her breath stopped. “Out,” I said to Micah. He hesitated, but one look at my face and he slipped past me without a word, pulling the double doors closed behind him. Kate didn’t move. Neither did
50 (Tyler’s POV) The run was going smoothly, no trouble, no mind-links buzzing in my head, just me, my thoughts, and the wind in my fur. Well, and the pup is still glued to my heels. I glanced back. He hadn’t given up once, sticking to my flank like a shadow. He was faster than I’d expected from someone who’d only shifted for the first time a few months ago. I’d have to keep an eye on him. We made the turn at the waterfall, the mist cool on my fur as I mind-linked Camerin. The second group is up, get them ready, I told him. You’re going to love the lake tonight. The moon’s almost high enough to fill its reflection. It’s beautiful. He gave me the report on the patrols. It made my heart sink a little. so few warriors to cover so much ground but everything was still quiet. Too quiet. The second run started, and the fifteen-minute window began. Only ten warriors were left to guard the packhouse. Jaxson’s death threat was never for me, I’d survived too many to count, but Kate was diff
49 (Camerin’s POV) I followed Tyler outside to greet the pack members waiting for the first run. I was impressed by how effortlessly the Alpha handled the crowd laughing, talking, greeting everyone like nothing was wrong. You’d never know he was worried about an attack or a kidnapping. He made sure everyone was focused on the run and ready to have a good time. When the time came, he gave the order to shift. Roughly 250 wolves cheered and began stripping off their clothes so they wouldn’t ruin them during the change. Then, all at once, the air was filled with the sound of bones shifting and fur sprouting. The security team stayed close, ready for any trouble. A crowd this big was bound to have a few scuffles as everyone fought for the best spot. Alpha Tyler didn’t give them time to settle. He threw back his head and let out a powerful howl before charging toward the mountains. The wolves surged after him eager, competitive but no one dared pass the Alpha. He set the pace. “I’ll k
48 (Tyler’s POV) I threw my drink against the wall and it barely missed Camerin’s head. Why would wolves be attacking Scott? Was Jaxson trying to capture him, use him as leverage to force a claim on the land between our packs? I grabbed my phone, ready to call Jaxson and demand he back off Kate’s friend but I froze before I could dial. I couldn’t risk tipping him off about Kate’s visions. If they got hold of Scott, they could torture that information out of him. I mind-linked the warriors tailing Scott, demanding an update. They responded immediately: they’d found his truck heading west on the highway toward Coulterville. So far, no sign anyone was following him; the warriors were keeping their distance so they wouldn’t spook him. I turned back to Camerin, frustration eating at me. “Where’s Kate? They should be here by now.” I started pacing. “Calm down, the run starts in fifteen minutes,” Camerin said evenly. “I’ll calm down when she’s here under our protection!” I snapped. Jus
