Chapter 4

Autor: Perfect Timing
After thanking Ms. Warner, I hurried after Ivan as he walked out of the office.

"Livingston Group's legal department will make you pay for whatever stunt you're trying to pull," I warned.

Before Ivan could reply, my phone started buzzing violently in my pocket. Multiple notifications poured in at once, and my brows tightened with each one.

First, it was a text from the student council president, Edison Mayes. He politely reminded me to manage my family conflicts well, suggesting that I step down as vice president and hand off my responsibilities for now.

Then, Amy Graham, the coordinator of the well-received campus startup incubator project I'd been involved in, texted me too. She informed me that my core team membership had been suspended, as the team wished to work with members who displayed more emotional stability.

Even the volunteer service club I frequently helped out with removed my name from their event roster.

I stared at Ivan, knowing the people who were behind this sudden wave of changes were him and the crowd at the mailroom, who'd taken the half-story they heard as the truth.

Just as my fingers went numb with anger, his voice came from above me. "See that, Mindy? This is what happens when you don't listen. And this is just a warning for wasting money on Black Friday sales. Something worse will be waiting for you if you still refuse to behave and apologize to me."

At that, Ivan let out a cold snort before he turned and walked away.

Just then, Mom finally called me back. "What's wrong, sweetheart? I was in a meeting, so my phone was on silent. I saw all your missed calls. Did something happen?"

After our call ended, I checked the flight confirmation she sent me. I let out a sigh in relief when I saw that she was already on her way back.

The weight pressing on my chest finally lifted a little at the thought of Ivan's ridiculous lies about to collapse soon.

I was about to head back to the dorm to pack up and take a hot shower. But the moment I stepped downstairs, two uniformed officers stopped right in front of me. "Are you Mindy Livingston from Room 1031? We need your cooperation with an investigation regarding a theft case."

The atmosphere in the temporary conference room that the college had arranged felt suffocatingly tense.

My head throbbed as I stared at the stacks of cash on the table, supposedly "found" in my wardrobe.

Ivan stared, "This is my fault, officers. I failed to educate her properly…"

He pointed at the money with a disappointed look. "I trusted her mother, so I told Mindy to distribute aid funds to the underprivileged students. I never imagined she'd use the school's funds to satisfy her own material desires!"

Beside Ivan were the same two young men from the mailroom who'd sided with him earlier. They were nodding enthusiastically.

"That's right, officers. We saw everything earlier. Ivan kept trying to talk sense into her and get her to return everything she bought. She refused and even threw a parcel at him."

"Exactly! Ivan told her not to splurge, but she was acting so en. She said that the money was hers the moment it touched her hand, and no one could tell her what to do."

I glanced at the nervous young woman sitting across from me in the cafe before speaking quietly, "You're Janice Lundell, right? Freshman in Econ and Management… and also… Margaret's daughter."I tossed the printed documents I'd gathered onto the table, making Janice flinch. "You were the one behind all those rumors about me on the college forum and confession wall, weren't you? Are you trying to avenge your mom?"Janice slowly looked up. Tears immediately pooled in her eyes, though her gaze remained stubborn. "So what if it was me? I know rich people like you have all sorts of connections. But you drove my family into a dead end. I deserve an explanation, no matter what!""A dead end?" I chuckled coldly. "Do you really think the slap your mom got was worth 200 thousand dollars?"I paused to look at Janice's stunned expression before continuing, "If my mom truly wanted to destroy her, she wouldn't have left a bank card after slapping Margaret then. Instead, she would have asked the

Ivan was formally arrested on multiple charges—attempted assault, defamation, and framing someone else. Margaret also found herself in court, facing charges of attempted fraud and defamation, with Livingston Group's legal department showing her absolutely no mercy. My campus life gradually began to settle back into its normalcy. It might have been even calmer than before.I threw myself into my studies and prepared my application for the exchange program. The departure date was getting closer, and I had already submitted all the required documents for them to be evaluated.I thought everything had finally blown over, and I could focus on waiting for the final evaluation. But just then, another undercurrent began to stir quietly on campus. At first, they were nothing more than a few scattered rumors, appearing on the college forum or on the anonymous confession wall. But those rumors soon multiplied and spread like a mutated virus. Before long, nastier and more targeted rumors s

Mom rushed over, still carrying traces of the cold foreign country air on her clothes. She patted my back again and again, wrapping me in her arms."It's okay, sweetheart. It's okay now," Mom murmured comfortingly, her voice carrying a faint tremor of fear. But when she turned toward the others, her gaze had gone back to the sharp, composed look of a powerful businesswoman.Whatever Ivan had done earlier could've fallen under harassment, which would be considered a college disciplinary case at worst. But attempting to assault someone with a weapon was a crime.Mom looked toward the officer who had subdued Ivan. In a calm yet unwavering tone, she said, "Thank you for your quick response, officer. Livingston Group's legal department will fully cooperate with the investigation and provide any evidence you need."We intend to press charges to the fullest extent of the law with no leniency spared."The officer nodded and handcuffed Ivan, who was still thrashing around. The conference

Terrified, Margaret let out a scream and shrank away instinctively. The officers were quick to react. Before Ivan's slap could land, they rushed forward and pinned him down firmly on both sides."Let me go! I'm going to kill this bitch who deceived me!" Ivan yelled."I didn't lie to you!" Margaret shrieked back from the corner where she was hiding. "You were the one who delusionally saw me as Ms. Charlotte! All the disgusting things you did had nothing to do with me!"Ivan retorted, "Bullshit! How could I have done any of that if you hadn't tacitly admitted to being her?""That's because you're dumb!" Margaret replied. While this ridiculous scene was playing out, a set of hurried knocks came from the conference room door. "The fingerprint comparison results are out, Officer Summerton. There are no fingerprints belonging to Mindy Livingston on those aid funds."At that, the previously thrashing Ivan instantly turned ashen.Under questioning by the police and college administrato

Everyone in the conference room was shocked when the woman called me "Ms. Mindy".Ivan's smug expression froze mid-smile. He whipped his head around to look at her before turning to me. The confusion in his gaze slowly turned into dawning horror. The conference room fell dead silent. Everyone's gaze landed on the woman, who went pale, and Ivan, whose expression had turned ashen.I slowly got up and walked over to her, my gaze icy when I glanced past her. My voice was soft, yet everyone heard me loud and clear. "Since when… Did you become my mom, Ms. Lundell?"The woman was Margaret Lundell, the housekeeper who had worked for my family for ten years. She was fired by Mom earlier this year for some reason.I glanced at her and then at Ivan. "So, you're the one Ivan is dating."Ivan grabbed Margaret's arm, his voice trembling as he asked, "Ms. Lundell? What is she talking about? Aren't you Charlotte Livingston, the chairwoman of Livingston Group?"Margaret's face went as white as a

I took a deep breath as I glanced at Ivan's planted witnesses and the solemn-faced officers and teachers. Then, I quietly said, "I didn't steal that money. My Black Friday sales purchases were paid for with my personal bank card. They're allowances given by my mom.""Bank card?" Ivan immediately pounced on the line, sneering. "Print out your bank statement then. We'll see if that 128 thousand dollars really left your account."My stomach lurched as I recalled my frozen account. "My account's having issues right now, so I can't pull up statements. But that doesn't make me a thief.""I bet you're just afraid to show it!" Ivan cornered me smugly."You've been caught red-handed, Mindy. How long are you going to keep denying it? I know you don't like me and think I'm not good enough for your mom, but you can't get revenge by committing crimes and screwing over the students who actually depend on that aid!" he continued. One of the experienced officers didn't take either side at face v
