Chapter 55

Harper

Vanessa stood in our living room when we came downstairs, flanked awkwardly by two security guards who clearly weren’t sure whether to treat her as a guest or a threat. She looked nothing like the polished, composed woman from the gala months earlier. Her hair was disheveled, mascara smudged beneath red-rimmed eyes, hands trembling slightly at her sides.

“Harper. Damian.” Her voice cracked on both names. “I need to talk to you. Please.”

“Give us a moment,” Damian said to the security guards, though his tone carried none of its usual authority, uncertainty coloring every word.

Once they’d stepped back, giving us space without leaving the room entirely, Vanessa sank onto the edge of the couch, hands pressed against her face.

“I didn’t do this,” she said before either of us could speak. “Whatever you’re thinking, whatever Renata told you, I didn’t hurt anyone.”

“Renata’s your cousin,” I said carefully. “You knew about her investigation.”

“I found out three days ago,” Vanessa admitted. “She mentioned it during a family call, something about a marina, about James Vale. I didn’t think much of it at the time.”

“But you told someone,” Damian said. “Didn’t you.”

Vanessa’s face crumpled, guilt and fear tangling visibly across her features. “My father. I told my father.”

The name landed with unexpected weight. “Your father?”

“Charles Cole,” Vanessa said quietly. “He worked with Victor Hale, decades ago. I never knew the details, only that he’d always warned me never to discuss certain business dealings from that period, that some things were better left buried entirely.”

Damian’s expression sharpened with sudden understanding. “Your father worked for Richard too.”

“Peripherally,” Vanessa said. “Handling certain… arrangements. I always assumed it was ordinary corporate strategy. I never imagined it involved actual violence.”

“Where is he now?” I asked, urgency sharpening my voice.

“I don’t know,” Vanessa admitted, tears finally spilling freely down her cheeks. “That’s why I came here. He called me last night, sounding strange, almost frantic, telling me to stay away from you both, that things were happening he couldn’t control anymore. When I tried calling him back this morning, his phone went straight to voicemail.”

“Vanessa,” Damian said carefully, “did you know he might be involved in threatening us? In hurting that dockworker?”

“No,” she said immediately, though something uncertain flickered behind her denial. “I swear I didn’t know, not specifically. But looking back, some of what he’s said recently, warnings about staying quiet, about certain family secrets needing to remain buried permanently… I think I ignored things I should have questioned more carefully.”

I studied her, searching for deception and finding instead genuine fear, raw and unguarded in ways I’d never witnessed from her before. “Why come here now? Why tell us any of this?”

“Because I’m scared,” Vanessa said simply. “Because whatever my father’s involved in, it’s clearly gone beyond anything reasonable. And because, despite everything between us, Damian, I don’t actually want to see your family hurt. Whatever resentment I’ve carried, it never extended to actual violence.”

Damian studied her carefully, years of complicated history between them settling uneasily across his expression. “We need to call Detective Ruiz. Immediately.”

“I already tried,” Vanessa said. “I called the police station on my way here, gave them my father’s information, his last known address. They’re sending someone to check on him right now.”

As if summoned by the conversation itself, my phone buzzed with a call from Detective Ruiz.

“Harper,” she said, voice tight with urgency the moment I answered. “We just arrived at Charles Cole’s residence. He’s not here. But we found something you need to see immediately. I’m sending officers to escort you and your family to the station now.”

“What did you find?”

“A hidden room, containing years of documentation. Financial records, surveillance photos, evidence connecting Charles Cole and Victor Hale to considerably more than just your father’s case. This appears to be part of an ongoing operation, Harper, something that’s continued for decades, well beyond Richard’s original business dealings.”

Ice spread slowly through my chest. “Ongoing how?”

“Blackmail,” Detective Ruiz said grimly. “Extensive blackmail, targeting numerous business associates over the years, using threats and intimidation eerily similar to what you’ve experienced these past few days. Your father’s case appears to be just one incident within a much larger pattern.”

I sank slowly onto the couch beside Vanessa, the weight of this revelation settling heavily through my exhausted body. “Is Richard involved? Beyond what he’s already told us?”

“We don’t know yet,” Detective Ruiz said. “But given what we’ve found, I need to speak with him immediately as well. This investigation just became considerably larger and more complicated than any of us initially realized.”

Once the call ended, I relayed everything to Damian and Vanessa, watching both their expressions shift through shock and dawning horror as the full scope of what we’d uncovered became increasingly clear.

“Decades,” Damian said slowly. “This has been happening for decades, and none of us knew.”

“Richard might have known,” I said carefully. “More than he’s admitted, even now.”

“I need to talk to him,” Damian said, already reaching for his phone. “Immediately.”

Vanessa stood slowly, wiping remaining tears from her cheeks, composure returning gradually despite everything still unfolding around us. “I should go. Talk to the police myself, properly, give them whatever information I actually have.”

“Vanessa,” I said, surprising myself with genuine sympathy despite everything complicated between us. “Thank you. For coming here, for being honest, even knowing how this might implicate your own father.”

“I couldn’t stay silent,” Vanessa said quietly. “Not when children are involved. Not when your daughter’s window was targeted.” She paused at the doorway, glancing back with something almost apologetic in her expression. “For what it’s worth, Harper, I’m glad Damian found happiness with you. I spent a long time being bitter about that. I don’t have room for bitterness anymore, watching everything unfold this way.”

She left shortly after, security escorting her safely to her car, leaving Damian and me alone in the tense, uncertain quiet of our living room.

“Richard’s not answering,” Damian said, phone still pressed against his ear, frustration evident in his tightened jaw. “I need to go find him directly.”

“I’m coming with you,” I said immediately.

“Harper, the children—”

“Security’s here. Lily and Grace are safe with them for now. I need to hear whatever Richard says directly, Damian. I can’t just wait here wondering.”

He nodded, understanding evident despite obvious reluctance, and we prepared quickly to leave, urgency propelling us forward despite the exhaustion still weighing heavily across both our shoulders.

Just as we reached the front door, my phone buzzed one final time, this message different from every threatening one before it, sender listed simply as “Richard.”

Chapter 59 Harper My pulse spiked, though I forced my expression to remain neutral, forced my hands to stay steady around the coffee cup in front of me. “Don’t turn around,” Detective Ruiz’s voice continued through the earpiece, low and controlled. “Keep talking to Renata. We’re repositioning now.” Renata, watching my face carefully, seemed to sense something shifting despite my attempt at composure. “Harper?” “Just keep talking,” I murmured, barely moving my lips. “Ask me about the marina documents. Anything ordinary.” She nodded slightly, launching into careful, rehearsed conversation about the investigation’s supposed next steps, though her voice carried a thin thread of tension beneath the practiced calm. “Two tables behind you,” Detective Ruiz continued quietly. “Gray jacket, baseball cap. Not alone, like I said — there’s a second man near the door, positioned like he’s watching the exits.” I fought the urge to glance backward, focusing instead on Renata’s face, on the st

Chapter 58 Harper “What kind of plan?” I asked, gripping the phone tighter. “I’d rather explain in person,” Detective Ruiz said. “But Harper, I want to be honest with you upfront. It involves you being visible, briefly, somewhere Marcus expects you to be. We’d have full protection in place, officers stationed at every angle. But I won’t pretend there’s zero risk.” My stomach tightened immediately. “You want to use me as bait.” “I want to use the appearance of an opportunity,” Detective Ruiz corrected carefully. “Marcus has been operating in shadows for over a decade specifically because he’s never had to expose himself directly. Give him a target he believes is unprotected, and he becomes considerably easier to catch.” Damian, listening on speaker beside me, shook his head immediately. “Absolutely not. I’m not letting Harper walk into a scenario designed specifically to lure out a man who’s already assaulted one person and threatened our children.” “Damian—” I started. “No,” h

Now.”I didn’t ask questions. I ran down the hallway, heart pounding violently against my ribs, bursting into Lily’s room to find her sitting up in bed, already awake, eyes wide with confused alarm.“Mom? What’s happening?”“We need to move, baby. Right now.” I pulled her from bed, wrapping a blanket around her shoulders as security guards flooded the hallway, weapons drawn, voices low and urgent as they coordinated a sweep of the entire property.“He’s not inside,” one of the guards confirmed within minutes, voice tight with controlled urgency. “The signal came from outside the perimeter. We’re checking the monitor’s frequency now — someone hacked into the baby monitor’s wireless signal remotely.”“Remotely,” Damian repeated, disbelief and fur

Harper“Alone” was not going to happen. I showed Damian the message, and his jaw set immediately.“Absolutely not,” he said. “That’s exactly the kind of message someone sends when they want to isolate a target.”“It’s from Richard’s number.”“Numbers can be spoofed, Harper. Or Richard could be compromised somehow, forced to send it.” He was already dialing Detective Ruiz. “We’re not doing this without police involved. Not after everything that’s happened.”Detective Ruiz answered immediately, and within minutes, a plan had formed — officers would meet us near the marina, staying out of sight but close enough to respond instantly, while Damian and I approached together, refusing to split up despite whatever the message had requested. The drive out to the marina took nearly forty minutes, the abandoned property emerging gradually from behind overgrown brush and weathered fencing, exactly the kind of forgotten place that made sense for secrets to have festered for over two decades.“Ther

Chapter 54HarperThe drive to the station passed in tense silence, streetlights strobing across the windshield while Damian gripped the steering wheel tighter than necessary, knuckles pale against the leather.“Is he alive?” I’d asked Detective Ruiz the moment we called back.“Alive,” she’d confirmed. “Unconscious, in critical condition. We don’t know more than that yet.”Small mercy, though it did little to ease the dread sitting heavy in my chest as we walked into the station twenty minutes later. Detective Ruiz met us in the lobby, expression grave despite her usual composed professionalism.“Thank you for coming so quickly,” she said, guiding us toward a small conference room. “I want to be transparent with you both, given how directly this affects your investigation.”“What happened to him?” I asked.“Blunt force trauma. Someone struck him outside his home, left him for the neighbors to find. Whoever did this clearly wanted him silenced before he could speak with Renata Cole tom
