The remainder of the day passed in a daze for Elara Hayes. Every sound felt amplified—the distant honking of traffic, the soft click of her computer, and the hum of the refrigerator. Alessandro De Luca's words, "A contract marriage... your life changes," could not be overpowered. She had tried to weigh options she didn't have for hours as she paced the apartment. Her mother's treatment would stall if she refused him. Marcus' betrayal had already wiped out the savings of her family. If she accepted him, a man she barely knew would share some of her life. a man who had anticipated the right time to intervene as he watched her despair. She tried to forget about it by shaking her head. Despite the room's amber hues as the sun set below the skyline, she was still unable to settle. She felt like she was stuck, like a chess piece that had been manoeuvred into a corner and had only two options: one that would have saved her family but cost her independence, and another that would have kept her pride but put her life in danger. Her phone buzzed continuously. She was reminded of the reason she couldn't say no by texts from her loving, frantic mother. Each bill contained a silent warning and arrived via email. As evidence that those she trusted could betray her without hesitation, Marcus's name lingered in the back of her mind like a ghost. Elara found herself outside her favourite café by evening. She once admired city lights for their beauty, but now they only added to her unease as they lit up the streets. She wrapped her coat tighter around her, not from the cold, but from the sudden chill of reality. She had to pick. There was no getting around it. The soft hum of her phone interrupted her thoughts. After some hesitation, she checked it. Alessandro De Luca: I hope you've considered my proposal. I'll be there until 10 p.m. in my office. Her breath was laboured. Although the text was composed, succinct, and unavoidable, he had not previously exerted pressure on her. There was only one option: a decision. Elara typed a response with trembling fingers. I require extra time. No response. Fine.

Mind racing, she walked home in silence. It felt like jumping off a cliff into a storm when I considered getting married to Alessandro, entering his world, and adhering to his terms, even if only for a short time. Despite this, she was also aware that the storm might be the only thing safeguarding her family. Sleep was strange that night. Every shadow in her apartment became a whisper, every creak a warning. She pictured Alessandro's office, the way he had measured her, and his cool, armour-like authority. She retreated from him in part. Inexplicably, I felt drawn to another part, something deeper. The morning was cloudy and uncertain. She carefully chose a navy dress that was both simple and imposing. She needed to come across as tough. There were no twitchy hands or soft words. The next chapter of her life would be shaped by this meeting and this decision. As she got closer, the black monolithic De Luca Tower came into view. Security scanned her ID without comment, letting her pass. Her worried expression was magnified a hundredfold by the reflective panels as the elevators were silent. She felt her pulse quicken as the doors opened onto Alessandro's floor. She was reminded that life went on around her despite her crisis by hearing the faint hum of the city below. He had already arrived. With the same serene aura that had frightened her yesterday, Alessandro De Luca sat motionless behind his desk. As she entered, his dark and unreadable eyes lifted. She didn't breathe for a split second. He greeted Ms Hayes with a pleasant greeting. "I assume you've thought about the proposal." Her shoulders were squared up. I've given it some thought. I have enquiries. He replied, pointing to the chair in front of him and saying, "Of course." “Ask.”

The cool leather beneath her was stiff as she sat. She stated, "You're asking me to marry you." "Publicly, legally, for two years. And I ought to have faith that everything—my life—will be alright. He replied, "Exactly." His voice was steady and composed. "It’s a calculated risk, but it works out well for us both." She yelled, "Calculated by you," without intending to. She took a deep breath and relaxed. "And I have to make a decision within 24 hours." "Yes," he replied. No indication of regret or apologies. She exhaled heavily. “Why me?” Even though he had already responded yesterday, she asked again. "Why not another person?" Alessandro sat up straight. "Because you are knowledgeable. Observant. Strong. You believe in fairness. You won't give in to the pressure of what's to come. Elara looked down. "And you need... exactly what from me?" He stated, "Image, compliance, and discretion." "Nothing more... unless we both agree." She felt her stomach turn. She feared the worst—scandals or public embarrassment—but his clinical distance scared her. Whether it was fear or something else, she wasn't sure. "And my loved ones?" She merely enquired. He stated simply, "Protected." "They will not suffer any harm while this contract is in effect." She let out a small, bitter laugh. "So... you control me to safeguard them." He made a correction, "Control." Structure and direction. You can still live your life within the restrictions. She abruptly stood. "And what if I say no?" He continued to sit. Then you watch as your life falls apart one part at a time. The treatment you received for your mother, your debts, and your reputation are all results of inaction. Her knees became weaker. She held onto the desk's edge. The urge to flee, to refuse, and to fight was omnipresent. However, she was compelled to listen by a different instinct, a more focused and subdued one. to stay alive. Her hands were shaking as she sank back into the chair. "And the conditions? I must be aware of everything. Details. Boundaries. Length. Obligations.”

Alessandro slid a folder in her direction from his desk. The paper was clear, precise, and professional. Expectations, public appearances, financial safeguards, and legal obligations were all laid out in each clause. Despite offering her safety, every word yelled control. Elara quickly scanned. Duration: two years. His housing situation: his residence The boundaries are well-defined. Privacy clauses: be careful. Support in an emergency is guaranteed. She opened her eyes. She murmured, "It's... comprehensive." He replied softly, "Yes." "And only reversible with mutual consent." She took a big inhale. "And... love? Connection? Emotional? He examined her. " That will naturally develop, if at all. Intimacy is not coerced. Respect is necessary. Anything additional is mutual." Reluctance mixed with relief. Her heart was still beating, but it was a little bit more steady now. She had limited authority. She could get through this. She could safeguard her loved ones. She slowly exhaled. She murmured, "Twenty-four hours." "I must make a choice." Alessandro replied, "Correct." He slightly softened his eyes. But keep in mind that some opportunities only come around once. Additionally, the world does not always wait for you to be prepared. With her head spinning, Elara stood and walked toward the door. She did not yet have complete faith in him. However, she also saw no alternative route. She felt the new reality press down on her as the elevator doors closed behind her. She was crushed by the city's frantic pace beneath her. The decision was dreaded, unavoidable, terrifying, but necessary. Her phone rang. A call from an unidentified number: Unknown: More than just your future will be shaped by your choice. Think carefully.

Elara's heart raced as she stared at the screen. The polished elevator wall's reflection showed her as worn out and cautious but determined. She was aware that the next 24 hours would set everything in motion. And making a decision she didn't want was the first step.

The moment arrived without ceremony. No warning. No buildup.Just an alert—sharp, insistent—on Elara’s phone as she stood in the hallway outside her office.URGENT PANEL ANNOUNCEMENT — TODAY 18:00 GMTSubject: Governance, Accountability, and Emerging Power StructuresHer name was listed. So was Alessandro’s.Elara stared at the screen for a long second longer than necessary. This was not an invitation. It was containment.Isabelle found her minutes later, breath tight but controlled.“They’ve moved the timeline,” she said. “This was supposed to be next month.”“They want a reaction,” Elara replied calmly.“Yes,” Isabelle said. “And they want contrast.”Elara nodded.Contrast required definition.Definition required simplification.Neither served the truth.“They’ll push us to clarify,” Isabelle continued. “To deny or confirm influence. To define each other.”Elara finally looked up.“We won’t,” she said.Isabelle studied her. “Then you need to be prepared for what silence will be inte

Elara did not announce her decision. She simply acted. The Global Ethics Forum released their statement at noon, polished and carefully neutral. It praised her “principled engagement” and expressed “mutual respect” for her choice to remain independent. What it did not mention was the rotating council. What it did not mention was decentralisation.By evening, interpretation had already begun.Headlines softened the truth into something more digestible.ELARA VOSS DECLINES PERMANENT ROLE — FUTURE COLLABORATION UNCLEARINDEPENDENT THINKER OR MISSED OPPORTUNITY?Elara read none of them. She felt the shift instead. It arrived in the tone of emails that grew slightly cooler. In invitations that arrived with caveats. • MARRIED TO THE CEO BY CONTRACT   Chapter 33—When Leadership Has No Name

The gathering Margaret Hale convened did not repeat itself. That, Elara realised quickly, was intentional. No follow-up emails. No proposed dates. No shared documents.Whatever had happened in that room was meant to stand on its own—contained, unreplicable, unleveraged.Yet its aftereffects arrived quietly. Two days later, Elara received an inquiry from a regulatory body that had previously dismissed her institute as “conceptual”. A request for consultation followed, narrow in scope but real. The day after that, a university ethics council asked whether she would consider serving as an external advisor. No branding. No funding.Just trust—tentative, but offered. She began to understand what Margaret Hale had meant by alignment. It wasn’t about building something new.It was about revealing who had already been waiting.Elara worked late into the night, drafting frameworks that resisted simplification. She refused slogans. She refused urgency where none existed. When Isabelle cautioned

Alessandro’s exit was announced on Thursday. Not the end of the week. Not the end of the quarter.Just early enough to control the narrative and late enough to prevent discussion.Elara was in Berlin when the notification came through. She was walking between buildings, coat pulled tight against the wind, when her phone vibrated once. She ordered coffee she didn’t want and sat near the window, hands wrapped around the cup, eyes unfoc

  • MARRIED TO THE CEO BY CONTRACT   Chapter 31— The Condition That Pretends to Be Neutral

Elara learnt about the board’s condition before Alessandro told her.Not because he hid it.Because institutions always leaked before they spoke.A short item appeared in a trade brief—buried beneath market updates and leadership shifts.De Luca Holdings to review governance boundaries amid executive affiliations.Affiliations.Plural.She read the line twice, then closed the article. When Alessandro called that evening, his voice was steady and controlled.“They’ve placed a condition,” he said. She didn’t interrupt.“They want formal separation,” he continued. “No public overlap. No joint appearances. No shared advisory channels.”Elara leaned back against the hotel headboard, window cracked open to the quiet of Geneva at night.“And if you refuse?” she asked.“They’ll initiate a succession review.”She absorbed that calmly.“And if you accept?”“They’ll retain me—with constraints.”There it was.Not a threat. An equation.“How long?” she asked.“They didn’t specify,” he replied. “Wh

The email arrived without preamble. No institutional header. No forwarded chain. No implied pressure.Just a name Elara hadn’t seen in years.Dr Amara KeeneShe opened it slowly, instinctively aware that some messages altered trajectory the moment they were read.Elara,I’ve been following your recent work—and the silence around it.
