Elara opened her curtains to find the early morning's gray light streaming in. Her stomach twisted with each buzz as her phone rang incessantly. a total of 24 hours. She could only make that choice. She had 24 hours to decide whether she would enter a life that was foreign, frightening, and intimidating or watch everything she cared about fall apart. Her shoulders were tense as she sat on the edge of her bed and stared blankly at the screen. Her mother sent her a slew of messages, some urgent, some pleading, and all laced with worry that she had no idea would be so devastating. She had promised herself that she would remain strong and in charge, but this was a storm she couldn't handle on her own. She couldn't shake the specter of Alessandro De Luca from her thoughts. His calm voice, the sharp precision in his eyes, and the subtle aura of power that made her feel both insignificant and curiously observed simultaneously replayed in her mind. Yes, he was unsettling, but strangely, he was also... compelling. Elara got up from the bed and looked around the small apartment. She needed to know. She needed a strategy. She was unable to simply react emotionally. The health of her mother, the safety of her family, and her future all depended on a thoughtful decision. She picked up her laptop and began researching.  Alessandro De Luca, De Luca Tower, corporate holdings, public appearances, and mentions in the news He was an invisible force that influenced markets, decisions, and reputations, and he was always present in the background. He was revered and quietly feared by everyone. Without yelling, he was a man who commanded obedience. Additionally, he was now controlling her future. The time passed. Her decision had not yet been made. Stepping into any possibility felt like entering a suffocating, invisible cage. If you reject Alessandro, the financial catastrophe looms. If she accepted him, a person she barely knew would share some of her life. She had no choice but to deal with it. She was back at De Luca Tower by the middle of the afternoon. She barely noticed her tired, anxious face reflecting in the tinted glass when the black limousine she had ordered showed up. The building appeared sharper, more intimidating, and colder than the previous day. Security immediately recognized her by silently nodding, maintaining their constant but unobtrusive vigilance. Before entering, she took a long, calming breath. Alessandro's floor was reached through the elevator doors. This time, she didn't hesitate. Each step in the direction of the office was deliberate. She didn't show any fear. She refused to let either him or herself question her resolve. Waiting was Alessandro. His dark eyes were calculating and unreadable, as always, and his composure was impeccable. He said, without rising, "Ms. Hayes." "You've made your decision." Elara brought her shoulders back. She replied evenly, "Not yet." "I've thought about your offer, but I have questions." He said, "Good," pointing to the chair in front of him. "I like clearer things." She sat with her hands on the arm rests. "What exactly do I owe you if I agree?" For a brief moment, Alessandro looked silently at her. Respect, cooperation, and adhering to the contract are all important. Beyond that, you continue to live your own life. “Your life remains your own?”  She said it again, stunned. "You expect me to live in your house, make public appearances, and uphold a public image for two years while remaining free? He said softly, "Yes." "Within the confines we've set for ourselves. Nothing other than what has been specifically agreed upon. No forced intimacy, no unreasonable demands.  Your autonomy is preserved, and you are safeguarded. Elara felt both relief and anxiety. She had no idea how clean the deal was. However, the scale of it—the public nature, the scrutiny, and the imbalance of power—was terrifying. The public, too? She inquired. "Everyone will be aware?" He gave a nod. "Transparency is essential. The agreement will be made public. It safeguards your family and maintains the image necessary for our purposes. Her chest got tighter. That wasn't something she had anticipated. She wasn't sure if she was ready because the entire world was watching, analyzing, and evaluating. The softening of Alessandro's voice was almost imperceptible. I understand how daunting this is. However, it is controlled and only temporary. You won't have to navigate it on your own. Elara held her balance as she inhaled. And my mother, too? He assured her that she was completely safe. "Medical costs are covered. No interference with her care.  All financial obligations have been settled. She considered the significance of her decision as she stared at him. It saved my life. However, accepting it would mean entering a world of power, scrutiny, and subtle threats, a life she had never imagined. The man who had betrayed her and the man she was supposed to marry entered her thoughts. Marcus had gleefully taken everything. In contrast, Alessandro provided stability, control, and direction. It was both reassuring and suffocating to think about it. She jerked around. She said quietly, "I need some time to think." Alessandro looked at her calmly and intensely. “Forty-seven hours. The offer is void after that point. Elara stood and gave a nod. Despite the fact that she had been closer to making a decision than she realized, she felt the weight of it. The weight of each step away from him grew with each one. Alessandro spoke once more before she left, his voice being measured and soft. "Make it a decision you can live with, whatever you choose." She pressed her forehead against the glass and stared at her reflection as the elevator doors closed. For the first time in hours, she let herself acknowledge the fear, the uncertainty, and the undeniable pull she felt toward the life—and the man—she was about to enter.

Her phone buzzed once more. An e-mail. Unknown: Time is running out. Choose with care. As Elara read it, she felt her hands shake. She realized that her life would never be the same as the city spread beneath her like an indifferent sea. She could no longer avoid making the most dreaded choice.

The moment arrived without ceremony. No warning. No buildup.Just an alert—sharp, insistent—on Elara’s phone as she stood in the hallway outside her office.URGENT PANEL ANNOUNCEMENT — TODAY 18:00 GMTSubject: Governance, Accountability, and Emerging Power StructuresHer name was listed. So was Alessandro’s.Elara stared at the screen for a long second longer than necessary. This was not an invitation. It was containment.Isabelle found her minutes later, breath tight but controlled.“They’ve moved the timeline,” she said. “This was supposed to be next month.”“They want a reaction,” Elara replied calmly.“Yes,” Isabelle said. “And they want contrast.”Elara nodded.Contrast required definition.Definition required simplification.Neither served the truth.“They’ll push us to clarify,” Isabelle continued. “To deny or confirm influence. To define each other.”Elara finally looked up.“We won’t,” she said.Isabelle studied her. “Then you need to be prepared for what silence will be inte

Elara did not announce her decision. She simply acted. The Global Ethics Forum released their statement at noon, polished and carefully neutral. It praised her “principled engagement” and expressed “mutual respect” for her choice to remain independent. What it did not mention was the rotating council. What it did not mention was decentralisation.By evening, interpretation had already begun.Headlines softened the truth into something more digestible.ELARA VOSS DECLINES PERMANENT ROLE — FUTURE COLLABORATION UNCLEARINDEPENDENT THINKER OR MISSED OPPORTUNITY?Elara read none of them. She felt the shift instead. It arrived in the tone of emails that grew slightly cooler. In invitations that arrived with caveats. In conversations that paused just long enough for her to notice the recalibration. This was the cost of refusing consolidation. You remained visible but unprotected. At the institute, Isabelle watched the numbers quietly.“They’re testing you,” she said. “Waiting to see if you’l

  • MARRIED TO THE CEO BY CONTRACT   Chapter 33—When Leadership Has No Name

The gathering Margaret Hale convened did not repeat itself. That, Elara realised quickly, was intentional. No follow-up emails. No proposed dates. No shared documents.Whatever had happened in that room was meant to stand on its own—contained, unreplicable, unleveraged.Yet its aftereffects arrived quietly. Two days later, Elara received an inquiry from a regulatory body that had previously dismissed her institute as “conceptual”. A request for consultation followed, narrow in scope but real. The day after that, a university ethics council asked whether she would consider serving as an external advisor. No branding. No funding.Just trust—tentative, but offered. She began to understand what Margaret Hale had meant by alignment. It wasn’t about building something new.It was about revealing who had already been waiting.Elara worked late into the night, drafting frameworks that resisted simplification. She refused slogans. She refused urgency where none existed. When Isabelle cautioned

  • MARRIED TO THE CEO BY CONTRACT   Chapter 32—The Exit That Leaves No Debris

Alessandro’s exit was announced on Thursday. Not the end of the week. Not the end of the quarter.Just early enough to control the narrative and late enough to prevent discussion.Elara was in Berlin when the notification came through. She was walking between buildings, coat pulled tight against the wind, when her phone vibrated once. She stopped without thinking, standing just off the kerb as bicycles rushed past her.De Luca Holdings Confirms Leadership TransitionShe didn’t open it immediately. She already knew how it would read.Following a period of strategic review, Alessandro de Luca has mutually agreed to step down as CEO, effective immediately. The board thanks him for his years of service and wishes him success in future endeavours.Mutually agreed. The phrase felt almost tender in its dishonesty.Elara crossed the street and entered the café she’d been heading toward anyway. She ordered coffee she didn’t want and sat near the window, hands wrapped around the cup, eyes unfoc

  • MARRIED TO THE CEO BY CONTRACT   Chapter 31— The Condition That Pretends to Be Neutral

Elara learnt about the board’s condition before Alessandro told her.Not because he hid it.Because institutions always leaked before they spoke.A short item appeared in a trade brief—buried beneath market updates and leadership shifts.De Luca Holdings to review governance boundaries amid executive affiliations.Affiliations.Plural.She read the line twice, then closed the article. When Alessandro called that evening, his voice was steady and controlled.“They’ve placed a condition,” he said. She didn’t interrupt.“They want formal separation,” he continued. “No public overlap. No joint appearances. No shared advisory channels.”Elara leaned back against the hotel headboard, window cracked open to the quiet of Geneva at night.“And if you refuse?” she asked.“They’ll initiate a succession review.”She absorbed that calmly.“And if you accept?”“They’ll retain me—with constraints.”There it was.Not a threat. An equation.“How long?” she asked.“They didn’t specify,” he replied. “Wh

  • MARRIED TO THE CEO BY CONTRACT   Chapter 30—The Offer That Doesn’t Ask Permission

The email arrived without preamble. No institutional header. No forwarded chain. No implied pressure.Just a name Elara hadn’t seen in years.Dr Amara KeeneShe opened it slowly, instinctively aware that some messages altered trajectory the moment they were read.Elara,I’ve been following your recent work—and the silence around it. I’m forming an independent policy institute. Not adjacent to Helios. Not funded by its usual partners. I want you to lead it.This isn’t a refuge. It’s a platform. If you’re interested, let’s talk.Elara sat very still. This wasn’t a consolation prize. It wasn’t a lateral move.It was a departure. Her phone buzzed almost immediately after Isabelle.“You got it too, didn’t you?” Isabelle asked without greeting.“Yes.”Isabelle exhaled. “They’re moving faster than I expected.”“So is she,” Elara replied.“Amara doesn’t wait for permission,” Isabelle said. “That’s why she still exists.”Elara smiled faintly. “That’s why this matters.”The rest of the day pass
