CHAPTER ELEVEN:

"I've been waiting for you to call."

Lyra sat frozen on the edge of the bed, the burner phone pressed so hard against her ear it hurt. "Who is this?"

"My name is Elena Marsh." A pause, brief and deliberate, like the woman on the other end was choosing her next words the way you'd choose a step across thin ice. "I knew your father."

"A lot of people knew my father."

"Not like this." Elena's voice had a rasp to it, the sound of someone who didn't sleep enough and drank too much co

  • MARRIED TO THE MAFIA KING    THE WEIgHT OF WHAT THEY SAW

CHAPTER SIXTY-FIVE:“She flinched when I walked into the room.”Dimitri’s voice was low and wrecked as he stood in the doorway of their bedroom, still wearing the same shirt from the afternoon. Lyra sat on the edge of the bed, the baby monitor glowing faintly beside her. She didn’t look up right away.“I know,” she said. “I saw it.”“She flinched, Lyra.” He stepped inside and shut the door harder than he meant to. “Our daughter looked at me the same way she used to look at the men who came for us. Like I was in danger.”Lyra finally lifted her head. Her eyes were red. “You came into her room with a gun in your hand because a bookshelf fell. What did you think she would do?”“I thought I was protecting her.”“You thought you were still in the war.” Her voice stayed quiet, but it cut clean. “There’s a difference. And she felt it.”Dimitri dragged both hands down his face and let out a sound that was half frustration, half despair. “I can’t keep getting this wrong. Every time I think I’m

  • MARRIED TO THE MAFIA KING    THE SOUND THAT BROUGHT IT ALL BACK

CHAPTER SIXTY-FOUR:The crash from upstairs was so loud the baby monitor screeched with static.Lyra was on her feet before the sound finished echoing. “June?!”Dimitri moved faster. He took the stairs three at a time, gun already in his hand even though it was supposed to stay locked in the safe. Lyra followed hard on his heels, heart slamming against her ribs. They found June on the floor of her bedroom, the heavy bookshelf tipped over beside her, books scattered everywhere. She was sitting up, eyes wide, a thin line of blood running from a cut on her forehead.“I’m okay,” she said quickly, voice shaking. “I was trying to reach the top shelf. It just… fell.”Dimitri dropped to his knees so hard the floorboards groaned. He set the gun aside like it burned him and cupped her face with both hands, checking her pupils, her head, the cut. “Does anything else hurt? Your neck? Your back? Tell me the truth.”“Just my head a little.” Tears welled up. “I didn’t mean to. I only wanted the sket

  • MARRIED TO THE MAFIA KING    THE QUIET IS LOUDER THAN THE GUNS

CHAPTER SIXTY-THREE:“I can’t sleep in this house when it gets this quiet.”Dimitri’s voice came from the doorway of the bedroom at 2:13 a.m. Lyra sat up fast, heart already racing, one hand automatically reaching toward the baby monitor.“What’s wrong?” she asked. “Did something happen?”“Nothing happened.” He stayed where he was, one shoulder against the frame, arms crossed like he was holding himself in place. “That’s the problem. Nothing’s happened for days. No threats. No late calls. No one was bleeding. And my body doesn’t know what to do with it. I keep waiting for the next hit.”Lyra stared at him in the dark. The relief she should have felt was tangled up with something sharper. “So the peace we fought for is the thing keeping you awake?”“Yes.” The word came out rough. “I know how that sounds. I know I should be grateful. I am grateful. But every time the house goes still I start calculating exits and weak points and who would come through which door. I can’t turn it off.”S

  • MARRIED TO THE MAFIA KING    THE WORK OF STAYING

CHAPTER SIXTY-TWO:The house felt different in the days after the kids asked about divorce. Not louder. Not quieter. Just be more careful. Like everyone was walking around something fragile that still sat in the middle of the living room even though no one named it out loud anymore.Lyra noticed it in the way June started hovering near doorways when she and Dimitri spoke in low voices. She noticed it in the way Theo watched his father put on a jacket, always checking to see if a bag came with it. Even Anna seemed clingier, reaching for whichever parent was closest the second the other left the room.Dimitri noticed it too. Lyra could tell by the extra patience in his voice when the kids asked the same questions twice, and by the way he started announcing where he was going even if it was only to the garage. On the third morning he came into the kitchen while she was making coffee and said, without preamble, “I’m going to start leaving the gun locked in the safe instead of the nightsta

  • MARRIED TO THE MAFIA KING    THE THINGS THE KIDS HEAR

CHAPTER SIXTY-ONE:“Are you and Daddy getting a divorce?”June’s question landed in the middle of the kitchen like a dropped plate. Lyra froze with the milk carton in her hand. Dimitri, who had been pouring coffee with his back to them, went completely still.Theo sat at the table beside his sister, eyes fixed on his cereal like it might disappear if he looked up. Anna banged a spoon against her high-chair tray, oblivious. The baby monitor on the counter stayed quiet.Lyra set the carton down carefully. “Why would you ask that, sweetheart?”June’s lower lip trembled. “Because you were yelling last night. And Daddy had a bag. I saw it. People only pack bags when they’re leaving and not coming back.”Dimitri turned around slowly. The color had drained from his face. “No one is leaving, June. Not me. Not Mommy. Not anyone.”“But you were fighting.” Theo’s voice was small and flat. “Really fighting. Not the regular kind where you make up before bed. The kind that feels like something is b

  • MARRIED TO THE MAFIA KING    THE THINGS WE CAN'T TAKE BACK

CHAPTER SIXTY:“You’re leaving?”Lyra’s voice was barely above a whisper, but it stopped Dimitri cold in the doorway of their bedroom. He had a duffel bag in one hand and his jacket in the other. The sun wasn’t even fully up yet.He didn’t turn around right away. “I need a few days to clear my head. That’s all.”“Clear your head.” She let out a short, disbelieving laugh that sounded more like a sob. “You pick a fight with me about how you keep risking your life, I tell you I’m scared of losing you, and your answer is to pack a bag and walk out?”He turned then. The healing wound in his side made the movement careful, but his eyes were hard. “I’m not walking out on the kids. I’m not walking out on you. I just can’t be in this house right now with you looking at me like I’m the same danger I’ve spent years trying to keep away from you.”“That’s not what I said.”“It’s what I heard.” His voice rose. “You stood there and told me you’re tired of being scared of me not coming home. You told
