Lila

The waiting room felt colder than it ever had.

I sat in the corner chair, my knees drawn up close, arms wrapped around myself as if that could stop the shivering that wouldn’t leave my bones.

Every so often, a nurse would glance over, pity softening her expression, and I’d force myself to look away. I couldn’t stand the thought of anyone seeing me like this small and hopeless and breakable.

Hours had passed since I arrived. The sky outside the tall windows had gone from gray dawn to blinding daylight, then slipped into the dull amber of late afternoon.

Still no news.

Still no word.

I rubbed my palms over my face, trying to scrub away the exhaustion, but it clung to me like a second skin.

My mother’s doctor had told me they’d stabilized her breathing, that she was resting for now. But the way he’d looked at me the careful neutrality in his voice told me he didn’t think it would last.

I pressed my fingertips to my temples, willing myself not to start crying again.

I’d run out of tea

LilaThe walls of this house have never felt so hollow.I sit curled on the corner of the couch, the baby cradled in my arms, the steady rise and fall of his chest the only anchor keeping me from being swept away by the storm that’s threatening everything. His tiny fingers twitch as he dreams, lips smacking softly like he’s tasting something sweet. I wish I could get lost in this peaceful moment just him and me, skin to skin, mother and child. But even as I stroke his dark curls, my heart is pacing a different rhythm entirely.Gunshots.I still hear them in my ears. That awful stutter of metal cracking against silence. And then the blood the pain Lena’s scream. Luca's voice, thick with fear. It all replays in my head like a horror film I can’t pause.I flinch when I hear the front door open."Lila?" Luca's voice calls out, low and careful."In here," I say, a little too quickly. He walks in, his eyes sweeping the room in a protective scan before locking on me and the baby. His shoulde

  • MARRIED TO THE MAFIA   Chapter 192

Lila. The house feels colder tonight, even with the heaters on and the soft throw wrapped around my shoulders. I sit in the nursery, gently rocking the baby in my arms. His tiny eyelids flutter, almost as if he’s dreaming already, his little fist curled up by his cheek. The soft hum of the lullaby mobile floats through the room, mingling with the ache in my chest.Too much has happened in so little time. We’ve barely had time to breathe.Barely had time to just… be.And now the weight of it all crashes over me in waves. The attempted attack on our home… the bleeding… the chaos… the fear that gripped me like a vice when I realized I was shot. All of it blurs together like some haunting nightmare. But what keeps me awake tonight, even with my baby safe and warm in my arms, is the silence that followed.Luca has been quiet since. Not cold, just… distant. Like he’s slipping back into that part of himself he worked so hard to break free from the part molded by shadows and secrets.I hear t

  • MARRIED TO THE MAFIA   Chapter 191

LilaThe house feels different now. The echo of gunshots still rings in my ears even though it’s been days since that night. Every creak in the walls, every slam of a door makes me flinch. I’ve kept the curtains drawn, the lights dim, and the baby monitor pressed to my side like a lifeline. But despite everything, I’m healing. My stitches itch where the bullet grazed my hip. It could’ve been worse. It *should* have been worse. And if it wasn’t for Lena pulling me down just in time… I don’t even want to think about it.Luca’s been a shadow these past few days. Moving through the house like a ghost, always watching the cameras, barking orders on hushed calls. He barely sleeps, and when he does, it’s on the couch in the nursery with a gun within reach.I hear the faint hum of the baby crying and shift in bed, grimacing as a bolt of pain flares through my side. Before I can swing my legs over the bed, Luca's already at the door.“I’ve got her,” he murmurs, disappearing down the hallway. A

  • MARRIED TO THE MAFIA   Chapter 190

LilaThe house was too quiet. Even after everything gunshots, blood, chaos, and farther silence felt heavier than the noise. I sat propped up on the couch, my body still aching from the bullet wound on my hip, which the doctors had cleaned and stitched up. I wasn’t supposed to be out of bed, but I couldn’t just lie there anymore, not when the world around me was threatening to crumble again. My fingers gripped the baby monitor beside me, static hissing through it. I glanced at the small screen. Our son was fast asleep in his crib upstairs, wrapped in that blue blanket Alex had brought. His tiny chest rose and fell steadily, completely unaware of the madness that seemed to trail our family like a curse.I could hear footsteps outside the house. Fast. Urgent.“Luca?” I called out, my voice shaky. The front door burst open a moment later, and there he was sweaty, breathless, eyes blazing. He locked eyes with me as he stormed in, slammed the door behind him, and twisted the key in the loc
