CARLMy eyes remained fixed on the paper displaying my score. I could not believe I had been overthrown by none other than Kaden with a perfect 100%. No one ever scored a perfect score in Mrs. Brenda’s welcome back test exams. My own 95% suddenly looked like failure and the sight made something tight twist deep in my chest. I shifted in my seat, gripping the edge of the desk a little harder than necessary as I tried to make sense of what I was seeing. The air in the classroom felt heavier and the low murmurs spread through the class.I glanced at Jade as she and Kaden now faced the class. The students were reluctantly applauding them now thanks to the teacher’s instructions. Jade stood at the front of the room with her hands clasped tightly in front of her, her shoulders slightly hunched like she wished she could disappear into the floor.
