GRAYSON’S POV

By the time I returned home from school, it was late already.

Late enough for me to be certain Isabella would definitely have returned home from college and just enough time for me to head to the kitchen to cook dinner.

Cooking was something I’d gotten used to overtime. It was a chore I shared with my dad, neither of us ever considering it a big deal. Whoever was simply home first cooked or in some cases, whoever was less exhausted did it.

Normally, with my dad out of town, I rarely cooked. I never really liked the idea of eating alone so it was easier to order in without needing to sit at the dining table. But for the first time, things were different. My dad wasn’t home yet I was cooking.

I stirred the pasta in the pan, glancing at the wall clock to ensure I didn’t lose track of time. It had been about twenty-four hours since Isabella and her brother moved in and we were all yet to have a proper discussion together. And there was no better place to have awkward co

  • MATED TO MY STEPBROTHER    EIGHT

ISABELLA’S POV Kai’s words wouldn’t leave my head. Not even after the lecture ended. Not after I packed my books. Not even as I walked out of school, hugging my bag like it could physically hold my anxiety in place.“Who doesn’t know Grayson Zucker?”That line kept replaying over and over, like a taunt. Each step I took toward the school gate only worsened the knot in my stomach. I kept glancing around too — hallways, cafeteria, parking lot — realizing how impossibly strange it was that I’d lived in this same pack, attended this same school, breathed the same air as him for months yet somehow never ran into him once. Not once.No accidental bump in the hallway. No friend mentioning him.No sighting from afar.Nothing.It was like the universe intentionally kept us apart until now.And now that it had tossed us together like some cruel joke, it was becoming painfully obvious that running from him would be a full-time job. One I was already failing at.By the time I got home, my head

  • MATED TO MY STEPBROTHER    SIX

ISABELLA’S POV “Honestly, Kai, believe me when I tell you I’ve had the craziest week ever.” I slammed my head on the table as I let out a groan, feeling Kai’s hand over my back as he gently consoled me. I faked a sob then tilted my head, meeting his face as he flashed me a sympathetic smile. “Your mum got married,” he recalled the parts of the week’s events I shared with him. “Her third marriage. Man, it must feel awful with you being in the middle all the time. At least, you don’t hate her new husband this time, do you?” I shook my head and let out a light laughter, Kai easily doing the same. That had to be one of my favorite things about him- his ability to make me come up with a smile regardless of how shitty I was feeling. I became friends with Kai Sommers during my first year of college. We were in the same department and coincidentally, both lost our ID cards on our first day. Spending more than half the day both searching for our ID cards, the two of oddly bonded quickly

  • MATED TO MY STEPBROTHER    FIVE

GRAYSON’S POVI’d always- ever since I was a little kid- wanted to find my mate. The idea of being destined to be with one person your entire life started off as intriguing. Then it grew into something more. Something deeper. And before I could even stop it, something I wanted more than anything. My parents’ relationship didn’t help make things better. They were perfectly in love, happiness visibly surrounding them all the time. It was amazing and every opportunity they got, they thanked the moon goddess for making them find each other. For mating them to each other. So quite naturally, I wanted my own mate too. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say I’d been counting down to the very moment I’d meet her. I had the lines I’d utter to her rehearsed in my head. How I’d tell her how glad I was to finally meet her. How I’d smile like a kid who got his first taste of candy and how I’d hug her for the first time, promising forever in her ears. It was all going to be like I’d dreamed- pe

  • MATED TO MY STEPBROTHER    FOUR

ISABELLA’S POV“No, no, no. This is not happening.”Not waiting for my mum or her husband to utter another word to me, I pushed Grayson away and immediately walked out of their presence, making my way to the garden. I could tell Grayson immediately followed me, his voice loud as he kept on calling out my name and trying to get me to pause my steps.“Isabella, wait up. Can you stop-”“You should stop following me,” I paused and sent him a glare as he grabbed my wrist. “And don’t touch me.”“Why?” his expression changed as he slowly loosened his grip on my hand, allowing me immediately hide my wrist behind me. “Why are you running away from me? Why are you avoiding me? You did it all week and now you’re back at it? Are you really intending on avoiding me forever?”“If I can, yes I will.”“Why?” his laughter was almost sardonic. “Because I’m your mate?”I winced at his words. “Please, stop. We’re not having this conversation again.”“I sure as hell do hope that’s the case,” he replied me

  • MATED TO MY STEPBROTHER    THREE

ISABELLA’S POVIt had to be the slowest a week had ever gone by.Ensuring I didn’t run into my mum more than twice a day, I spent the entire seven days till her wedding locked up in my room half the time, the other half being spent at college. The guilt I felt aside, it was pretty easy to avoid my mum and not spend time uselessly chatting about her wedding that was upcoming. It wasn’t her first or second wedding and it definitely wasn’t going to be the event that would mark the miraculous rekindling of our already dead relationship. If I could, I was going to avoid my reality forever. But the second I watched the long hands of the clock hit twelve, I knew the time I had running from it had finally come to an end.“Isabella,” the voice came from behind my door, followed by the squeaking sound as the door was opened to reveal my brother. “It’s time. We’re going to be late.”I looked at Beckett and nodded slowly, noticing how he checked me out to confirm if I was ready. One hand was shov
