Iby's dazed look only infuriated May more. She repeated the same question again.
"Iby, do you kill people for a living?"
The longer he left the question unanswered, the faster her heart beat. She didn't know why but she could almost hear the thudding in her ears. Slow but heavy.
Was she friends with a murderer? If he decided to kill her now, could she defend herself?
No! She wouldn't be able to. If she was that powerful she'd never allow Edric to abuse her.
Different questions flooded her mind. She couldn't think straight. In fact, she didn't know what to think.

It was a good thing Edric didn't get to meet Iby. Any time May's mind flashes back to it, she wonders what would have transpired between the two men if Iby hadn't hidden in Maryam'sroom like she had told him to.Edric had forgotten an important file at home. The sun had barely set when a knock came to the door. The woman outside was getting impatient when nobody came to open it. She knocked again. This was all too sudden for May. She didn't want her daughter to be taken from her. "What about school?" she asked. Hoping that mama would take the hint."She will attend school there. Don't worry about that."When May left, Mama turned to Edric whilst untying and retying her wrapper, as if to give him a final warning."Whatever you sow today, remember you're going to reap it. Turning off the gas cooker, Iby took the kettle and poured some boiled water into a small bowl. He turned on the tap, totally forgetting that his landlord hadn't pumped water yet. When no water rushed out, he fetched water with a cup from his black water drum that was at the side of the kitchen close to his chest freezer.He mixed the cold water with the hot one. May cleared the dishes and washed it against Iby's wish. He'd told her he was going to do ithimself later but she disagreed. She joined him in the room sometime later and found him face up with his two hands behind his head on his bed, staring at the ceiling.He was so lost in his thoughts that he didn't notice her appearance. She looked at the ceiling too, struggling to find what was so interesting. May found nothing. She rolled her eyes and cleared her throat, which caught his attention.Iby turned towards her. She tilted her head and forced a smile, making her look stupidly cute.He noticed that she smiled a lot whenever she was with him. And not her usual fake smiles.
