Mag-log inMaria could not sleep well on the night of her wedding.
She was just lying down on her bed looking at the ceiling, her so-called husband was not even in the same room with her. She was still imagining the title wife in her mind.
And she could not go back now that she had signed the marriage contract
Early morning, she had a knock on her door
She panicked a little and wondered who was on the door.
When she opened the door, she saw two men there looking at her, and they were well-dressed in nice black suits.
“We want to have a word with you, madam,” one of the men said
“Okay, what do you want to discuss about” Maria asked, even though she knew what they wanted to talk about
“The wedding.”
She felt so uncomfortable again. They did not even ask for her permission; they just walked into the room, opened the wardrobe, and brought out a colorful white gown she had never seen. It was simple but beautiful.
This was not a celebration.
It was a transaction, so it was not meant to be stunning or too interesting.
Maria just stood there and watched them moving around in the room
“Do you like the dress?” one of them asked.
Maria just nodded her head, even though she did not feel anything
They gave her space to get into the gown, funny enough its fitted her so well because it was measured a few weeks ago, which that alone scared
By exactly seven, a car came to pick her up
Thirty minutes late, they arrived at an unknown location
No guests. No music. No flowers.
Just silence.
Walton James just stood beside the room, waiting for her to walk in, because the event did not really matter to him.
Maria walked towards him, looking at his eyes
She was feeling like a small girl
When he looked at her, he paused as if nothing was going through his mind
“You came just on time,” he said.
“Same with you,” she replied.
The preacher started talking about commitment, unity, and peace, but Maria did not hear a word because her mind was not even there.
Her mind was somewhere else.
At the hospital.
At her father’s bed.The money is already moving through accounts.“Do you, Maria Collins?”
“I do,” she said quickly.
The words felt so strange coming from her mouth.
“Do you, Walton Jame?s”
“I do.”
His voice was firm. Confident.
The ring was on her finger. It'ss felt cold and heavy.
And before you know it there were done
“Congratulations,” the preacher said.
Walton turned to her. “We should be going already.”
That was it.
Maria came outside and stood for some minutes; the air was cold on her skin, but the sun was still shining. The ring she was wearing was now feeling heavier after everything had been done. It was not just a ring; it was proof. Proof that her life has turned around and she will never be the same person again.
She followed Walton James into the waiting car. Neither of them discussed nor talked to the other throughout the drive. The keep quiet for a long time, the atmosphere was filled with tension, but they refused to let it out.
Everything was just moving, the trees, cars, people, le and life, ife but nothing fascinating got her attention;tion she was just lost in herthoughtsought oourow are new life will be.
When they finally reached the house, she took our time before getting down, she observed her environment for some minutes before, Walton packed the car and joined her to walk towards the door of his house. It did not feel warm. It did not feel welcoming. It felt like a place where emotions were not permitted.
“Come on, let’s go inside,” Walton said.
She followed him quietly. When he opened the door, it was so beautiful inside, but there were no emotions, no family picture, no happy moments, justan xpensive sculpture made of Gold, silver, and bronze.
“This is your new home now,” Walton said.
Maria had no choice but to reply, “okay”
A woman walked towards them from one corner of the house
“Welcome, Mrs. James,” the woman said.
“Mrs. James”. Maria said in her mind
She forced a smile andsaidi,,d “Thank you.”
Walton turned to the woman. “Show her to her room.”
“Yes, sir.”
Maria followed the woman upstairs to a very large, well-furnished, and quiet room. Everything looked new, like no onehads ever lived there before.
“This is your room,” the woman said.
Maria stepped slowly into the room, with her little bag, which did not fit the luxury appearance of the room, remindingher that her life had completely changed.
If I want anything, just let me kknoww” the woman said.
Maria was alone.
She was tired of the day's stress, so she sat down on the bed, she notice a very big mirror in front of her. She got up and looked at herself in it. The woman staring back at her looked different.
Married.
She touched the ring again.
“Just one year,” she whispered.
“How is your father?” Walton asked without looking up.
“He’s still in the hospital,” Maria replied. “But… thank you for helping.”
He gave a face gesture. “It’s taken care of.”
She wanted to talk more like husband and wife, but she remembered the contract.
No kiss.
No smile.
No warmth.
As she walked out, she realized something strange
She was married.
And she had never felt more alone than in that moment.
Maria did not leave were her curtain was , she was lost in thoughts until sunrise. She in a dark for hours quietly. Her back was against the wall and folding her knees. She was still unto the USB drive. She had not let it go the entire night. Not once. She was checking it now and then to make sure it was still there, she was so scared a hand will appear thought the wall and snatch it from her.The security men had done their check. Nothing unusual, they said, There cameras were active and no one came in or went out.But she still had the picture of her car on her screen And she knew whoever took the picture know what she drove and where it will be parked. That was not nothing. That was a message. A clear one.We are watching you. We are close. And we are not scared of you.Maria finally decided to stand up after everything. Her whole body was aching her. Her back hurt. Her neck hurt. She was looking so weak like a lot has been happening to her and s
Mr. Harrison's office smells of expensive coffee and an old leather chair. Maria sat down in front of Mr. Harrison, dropping all the documents she had on his table."Marcus Chen," she said, pointing to the picture she saw in Walton's files. "Daniel's former legal advisor. He came to our wedding."“Are you sure? Mr. Harrison said."Positive. He was behind us, looking. I was thinking he was a business partner. He looked at Walton in a way..." she paused, trying to remember the look in the man's eyes. "It was not good."The lawyer opened a file on his system, typing. "Marcus Chen had left the office three months before the murder. Cited personal reasons." He turned the screen toward Maria. "Now look —two weeks after he left, he received money worth five hundred thousand dollars from an offshore account."Maria's heart beat increased. "Will you be able to get the account?""I tried. The account is buried under multiple shell companies. But..." Harrison brings out another document, "I foun
Walton did not know what day it was again because he had been there for a while.Just the sound of the overhead light, but it was always on and off, and the grey walls were nothing significant,no day, no night. He did not knoitts was three days ThTheksthere only thing was that he was losing his mindHe was sitting on the floor with tears in his eyes; he was lost.Theywent back in memory lane to remember what happened in the past, to memories he had buried a long time agoAbout twenty five ago.Walton was about twelve years old, playing in dad’s office, while the father Richard James was on the phone, shoutingatn someone."Who do you think you are to threaten me, so you want to take all I have worked for?" Richard saidHe was trying to be quiet. Young Walton was so scared of how the father was shouting and was feeling for the person on the other side of the call."I did all the work myself day and night n, nobody helped me, nobody saw my pain or came to my aid, I won’t allow you to
Maria was just in her car outside the lawyer’s office, but in pain, staring at her mirrorAll the documents piled up on thpassenger'srs seat looked like a burden to .her.Inside the documents was everything the lawyer had sent her. Emails. Transaction records. Names. And one name kept appearing over and over again.Marcus Chen.Daniel's former legal advisor. She just had noo choice but to pick up the documents, and she was so weak she had not slept well or eaten well for some days. But her mind was sharper than it had ever been. The receptionist elcomed r with a smile when she came in. Mr. Thompson is expecting you."Maria shook her head in response and walked straight inintoe office without saying a word.Mr. Thompson has been working tirelessly on the Walton case, and it was showing on his face when she entered. He lifted his face to see and welcome her."Maria," he said, already on his feet. "Please sit."She sat down and put the document on his desk. "I
It was around evening when someone knocked on the day..It was not a friendly knock or a knock that sought permission or approval from anyone inside the house. So loud that is disturbed the peace of mind of everyone at home.Maria suddenly woke up from her bed with shock because she was scared of the loud sound she was hearing. After some minutes, the loud sound continued.Voices followed.Authoritative. In the morning, at the rising of the sun, the brightest of the luxurious company was seen.Maria woke up like on a regular day, where no emotions could be felt at home, she looked into the mirror just to behold the woman looking at her, the look so heavy on her, not the gold but the chains. She sat up slowly, covering herself with the duvet. She was married. Not for love. Not for comfort. But to survive. Her eyes shifted to the end of the room. Empty. As expected,He did not stay in the same room with her that nightShe did not really havee her day has she wanted figured o as she wantedut as she wanted, no thoughts but himMaria felt disappointed by her condition, but could not change itShe said to her reflection, “This is not forever.”But she herself didn’t sound convinced. When she got downstairs, she noticed everyone was busy with their duties, the cleaner and server an all others. All of themwere very busy, all they could do was greet her and continue with what they were doing.
