Chapter 1

The Ashes We Inherit

The scent of ash and burnt cedar still clung to Maya’s skin, a lingering shadow of the pack house that had burned to the ground three years ago.

She stood before the full-length mirror in the dimly lit dressing room, smoothing down the silver silk of her floor-length gown. The fabric was breathtaking, soft as water and shimmering under the warm vanity lights, but to Maya, it felt like a gilded cage. Every thread was paid for by the Bloodmoon Pack—the very pack that had systematically torn her family’s legacy to pieces.

A light knock echoed through the door before it swung open. Her mother’s former handmaid, Clara, stepped inside, her hands trembling as she held a velvet box.

"They're waiting downstairs, Maya," Clara whispered, her eyes red-rimmed. "Alpha Julian has just arrived. The ceremony starts in ten minutes."

Maya didn't flinch. She kept her gaze fixed on her reflection, watching the mask of serene composure slide perfectly into place over her face. "Let him wait. He’s waited three years to claim our lands; ten minutes won't kill him."

"Please, child," Clara pleaded softly, setting the box on the vanity. "You cannot let him see the hatred in your eyes. He is an Alpha without mercy. If he suspects for a second that you aren't just a docile, broken survivor of the eastern fire, he will—"

"He won't suspect a thing," Maya interrupted, her voice steady and smooth as velvet. She reached into the box, pulled out a delicate diamond necklace, and fastened it around her throat.

Julian Vance was an Alpha built on blood and ruthless ambition. When her father’s territory fell, Julian had executed everyone who bore the crest of the Bloodmoon’s former rivals. Maya had only survived because she had been hidden away under a false name, stripped of her birthright, and stripped of her identity. To the world, she was merely Maya Vance—an orphaned noblewoman from an extinguished bloodline, agreeing to a forced contract marriage to unite the remaining southern territories.

To Julian, she was just a political bargaining chip. A meek, quiet wife to present at pack summits.

He has no idea who is sitting at his table, Maya thought, her heart pulsing with a quiet, lethal beat. He thinks he conquered us all. He doesn't know he's bringing the fire directly into his home.

"It's time," Clara said, stepping back with a heavy sigh.

Maya turned around, taking a deep breath. She let her shoulders drop slightly, relaxing her jaw to appear soft, vulnerable, and yielding. The fierce, vengeful heir of the eastern pack disappeared, replaced by the timid bride the world expected to see.

She walked out of the room and down the wide marble staircase leading to the grand hall.

The heavy mahogany doors at the end of the hall stood open, revealing the courtyard lined with black-suited guards and high-ranking pack members. At the center of the altar stood Alpha Julian Vance.

He was towering, broad-shouldered, and draped in the stark black formal attire of the supreme Alpha. His dark hair was brushed back, framing a face cut from hard granite—sharp jawline, piercing golden eyes, and an aura of raw, terrifying power that made the air in the room feel heavy.

As Maya stepped into the hall, Julian turned his head. His golden eyes locked onto hers, cold, calculated, and completely devoid of warmth. There was no affection in his gaze, no softness for the woman he was about to tie himself to for life. He looked at her the way an emperor looked at a newly acquired piece of land.

Maya kept her head down slightly, playing her role, but every instinct in her body screamed in warning. The sheer intensity of his presence was overwhelming, a dark force pushing against her senses.

She reached the bottom of the stairs and stopped in front of him.

Julian extended his hand, his long, calloused fingers waiting for hers. When Maya placed her palm in his, a sharp electric jolt zapped through her skin—a violent spark of energy that made them both freeze.

Julian’s golden eyes narrowed instantly, a flicker of dark intrigue crossing his hardened face. For a split second, his grip tightened around her fingers, possessive and unyielding.

"You're late, Maya," he said, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that vibrated straight through her chest.

"Forgive me, Alpha," she replied softly, keeping her voice trembling just enough to play the fragile bride. "I was nervous."

Julian stared down at her, searching her face with an intensity that threatened to strip away her disguise. "Nervousness is useless," he murmured, his thumb brushing over the pulse point on her wrist, feeling her elevated heartbeat. "You have one job in this pack, my dear wife. Obey, and stay out of my way."

Maya looked up into the eyes of the man who had destroyed her life, forcing a delicate, submissive smile.

"Of course, Alpha," she whispered.

Enjoy your victory while it lasts, Julian, she added in her head, holding his gaze without backing down. Because before this contract ends, I will take everything from you.
