Karen refused, her voice trembling but firm. “I want you. Please don’t leave me.”

Tears slid down Franklin’s cheeks. He gently took her wrists, lowering her hands from his face. “I’m sorry, Karen,” he said softly. “I don’t deserve a beautiful soul like you.”

He stood to leave. Panic flashed in Karen’s eyes; she sprang up and wrapped her arms around his waist from behind. “I don’t care that your heart yearns for Christy,” she said, breathless and determined. “I will never give up on you, Franklin. I’ll wait for you. I’ll keep showing up in your life until you realize we’re meant to be. I hope you can tolerate me.”

When she finished, she let him go. Franklin lowered his head and walked out. He slid into his car and glanced back at the doorway. Karen stood on the threshold, fists clenched, stubbornness etched across her face, her eyes brimming with determination.
