The butler remained silent, watching as Winchester rose to his feet and left the bedroom.

He didn’t go to see Franklin until noon. After lunch and a bath, Winchester opened the door and found him sitting on the bed. When Franklin looked up, his face hardened.

Winchester closed the door, crossed the room to the framed family photograph, and lifted it. He stared at it for a long time.

“As you’ve grown older, I’ve realized I didn’t do enough for you,” he said, voice tight with regret. “I wasn’t a good father figure. I thought buying you everything you wanted and giving you the best schools and tutors was how to raise you. But I neglected your heart.”

His eyes filled. “Your parents… I wish they were here. You don’t deserve all this pain. I wanted to make up for my mistakes, but in the end, I couldn’t.”

He turned toward Franklin. “I hope you can forgive me. I’m not perfect. I only gave what I knew how to give.”
