The first warning bell rang before midnight.

Chloe looked up from Lyra’s cradle.

“That is not the signal for a patrol returning.”

Hale was already reaching for his sword. “No. It means something has crossed the southern watchline.”

A second bell followed, deeper than the first.

Then a third.

Lyra stirred against Chloe’s chest, her tiny fingers curling into the fabric of her mother’s nightdress. A faint golden glow gathered beneath her skin.

Chloe covered her daughter with the edge of the blanke

“He imprisoned us. He took what remained of our power and attached his consciousness to the crown.”Hale forced himself upright.“So the crown is the anchor.”Caelan nodded.“Not the crown you wear. The first crown.”The figure's hand moved toward the iron circlet on its head.“You speak too much.”Caelan's chains tightened again.Chloe stepped between them.“Then why did you call Hale a stolen crown?”The figure's gaze settled on her.“Because the northern crown was never meant for him.”“Explain.”“The first king's throne was built upon the keeper's blood. Every ruler who sat upon it inherited a stolen authority. The crown was taken from the woman who held the gate.”Chloe looked at the royal mark on Hale's wrist.“And you want Lyra because she carri

The first king had never died.Chloe finally understood why the entity had called the northern king a stolen crown.Hale wasn't simply descended from the first king. Someone—or something—had been preserving that bloodline for a purpose. And now it had come for Lyra.“Son.”The word rolled through the passage.Hale didn't lower his sword.“Don't call me that.”The figure tilted its head. The black iron crown caught the faint golden light spilling from the stairs.“Have you forgotten your manners?”“I was never taught to bow to dead men.”A thin smile appeared beneath the ash veil.“Dead?”Caelan remained on one knee. His chains scraped against the stone as he tried to retreat.“Your Majesty,” he rasped. “Don't listen to it.”The figure glanced down at him.“You have been disobedient for a very long time, Caelan.”“Long enough to recognize a liar.”The iron chains tightened around Caelan's wrists. He cried out.“Stop!” Chloe stepped forward.Hale caught her arm.“Stay behind me.”“It's

The message was written in a different hand.To the child who carries the keeper's blood:If you are reading this, the royal line has failed you again. Do not trust the king who offers you a crown. Do not trust the guardian who offers you a bargain. Find the boy beneath the well. He is not dead. He is not alone.Chloe read the last sentence twice.“The boy beneath the well.”Hale looked at her.“Caelan.”“Your ancestor's son.”Seraphine turned the parchment over.A symbol had been drawn on the back: two crescents joined at their tips.Chloe recognized it immediately.“The second door.”Seraphine nodded.“Perhaps Caelan was never buried beneath the old sanctuary. Perhaps he was taken somewhere else.”Hale looked toward the closed second vault.“Somewhere behind that door?”“Possibly.

Hale stopped.“Your crown is not yours.”He turned his head.“Come and take it.”The doors rattled.A deep impact struck from within.Chloe tightened her hold on Lyra.Hale placed a hand against her back.“Keep walking.”They did not look behind them. The royal vault lay beneath the eastern wing, beyond a corridor that had been closed since Hale's coronation. Two iron doors guarded its entrance. The royal crest was engraved across both, its crescent and three claws still intact.Hale approached the lock.Seraphine followed, carrying the recovered scrolls.“This vault was built before the northern palace,” she said. “The oldest records were transferred here when the first royal residence was abandoned.”“Why was it closed?” Chloe asked.“King after king added to the collection. Eventually, the cou

And the royal sigil broke in half. The sound was sharp enough to silence the laughter behind the archive doors. A piece of carved stone struck the floor beside Chloe's boot. The remaining half of the crescent hung above the entrance, split through the three claws.Seraphine stared at it.“No,” she whispered.Hale did not look away from the broken symbol.“Tell me I'm wrong.”The healer swallowed. “I wish I could.”Chloe shifted Lyra against her shoulder.“Maereth Cross was a queen. Why was her name erased?”Hale's jaw tightened.“Because the official history says the first king founded the northern kingdom alone.”“And you believed it?”“I was taught it.”“That wasn't my question.”He finally turned toward her.“No. I never believed the story was complete.”“Yet you never questioned it?”“I questioned the gaps. I questioned why the royal records began with a coronation and not a birth. I questioned why the oldest portraits had been removed from the throne room.” His gaze returned to t

The words had barely left his mouth when the wall opened. Not the archive doors. The wall beside them.A narrow seam appeared in the stone, forming the outline of a second doorway. Its surface was pale and smooth, unlike the rough granite around it. Two crescents had been carved into the center, one above the other.Seraphine stumbled backward.“That wasn't in the plans.”Hale gave her a sharp look.“What plans?”“The original architectural plans. There was no doorway here.”Chloe approached the seam.Hale caught her hand.“Don't.”“I'm not touching it.”“You're thinking about it.”“I'm thinking that our daughter just revealed a door our oldest records don't mention.”“Which is precisely why you should not touch it.”A faint sound came from the other side.Three kno
