Se connecterI didn’t sleep after the warrant.
How do you sleep when the police are in the next room going through the man you’re living with’s files? When there’s a photo of you half-dead on the floor and the only person who was there won’t explain why he paid to erase it?
I didn’t.
I stayed in the guest room with the lights off and the laptop burning my thighs.
By 7 AM the police were gone. They took two boxes. Ethan didn’t say what was in them. He just stood in the doorway with his arms crossed and that jaw ticking like it does when he’s pissed and scared at the same time.
“You okay?” he asked.
“No,” I said. “But I’m going to be.”
Because if I let David win, if I let 2023 bury me, then he gets everything. My dad’s company. My name. Me.
So I did the only thing I could control.
I built.
*S.M. COLLECTIONS*
The name looked wrong on the screen. Too small. Like I was whispering.
I changed the font. Bold. Black.
Then I opened the sketch file from last night. The blazer with the high collar. The trousers that cut you in half and made you look taller than your enemies. The dress with no back. Armor. That’s what it was.
My phone buzzed.
Ms. Reyes.
“Vanta Manufacturing. 2 PM. They’re expecting you. Don’t be late. Don’t be nice.”
I laughed for the first time in days.
Ethan was in the kitchen when I came out. He looked like he’d showered but not slept. There were coffee cups everywhere. Legal documents spread across the island.
“I have a meeting,” I said.
He looked up. “Where?”
“Vanta. About production.”
His brows pulled together. “David has ties to Vanta. Half the board plays golf with him.”
“Then it’s good I’m going,” I said. “Let them see me without him.”
Ethan studied me for a long second. Then he nodded. “I’ll drive you.”
“I can take a car—”
“No,” he cut me off. “You’re not going alone.”
We didn’t talk on the drive. The city was already loud. Horns. People. The world moving on like my life wasn’t falling apart.
Vanta Manufacturing was glass and steel. 40 floors. David’s name was probably on a plaque somewhere in there.
The receptionist looked at me, then at Ethan, then back at me.
“Miss Miller? Mr. Vanta will see you now.”
Mr. Vanta was 60, bald.
“Miss Miller,” he said. “What a surprise. And Mr. Blackwood.”
“Mr. Vanta,” Ethan said. His voice was ice. “This is Sarah Miller. She’s launching a label.”
“Is she now?” Mr. Vanta leaned back. “David mentioned you were... taking some time off. For health reasons.”
There it was.
I felt my face go hot. I could walk out. I could cry in the car.
Instead I opened my laptop.
“These are the designs,” I said. My voice didn’t shake. Much. “12 pieces. Capsule collection. Production ready in 8 weeks. I need 500 units to start. I’ll pay 50% upfront.”
Mr. Vanta looked at the sketches. Then at me.
“Black,” he said. “Very... severe.”
“For women who are done being soft,” I said.
He was quiet for too long.
“David won’t like this,” he said finally.
“I’m not asking David,” I said.
Ethan shifted beside me. “You’ll take the order, Vanta. Or we take Blackwood Corp’s entire account to Lin & Co.”
It was a threat. And it worked.
Mr. Vanta sighed. “Fine. 500 units. 8 weeks. But Miss Miller? If this blows up in your face, don’t come crying to me.”
“I won’t,” I said.
We left with a contract and a date.
In the elevator, Ethan finally looked at me.
“You were good in there,” he said.
“I was terrified,” I admitted.
“I know,” he said. “But you didn’t show it.”
The doors opened. And Lisa was standing there.
Of course she was.
She had on a white dress. Soft. Pregnant looking. Even though she wasn’t pregnant. She just wore it to make people ask.
“Well,” she said, smiling. “If it isn’t the bride.”
“Lisa,” Ethan said. His tone could cut glass.
“Don’t,” I said to him. “I’ve got this.”
Lisa’s eyes flicked to me. “I heard about the police. And the warrant. That must be stressful. David’s so worried about you.”
“He shouldn’t be,” I said.
“Oh but he is,” Lisa said. She stepped closer. She smelled like roses and lies. “He told me about 2023. About how you were in the car. About how Ethan paid to make it disappear. That’s not normal, Sarah.”
I felt a wave of heat through my spine.
“How do you know about that?” I asked.
Lisa just smiled. “David tells me everything. We don’t keep secrets.”
Ethan moved like he was going to grab her. I put a hand on his arm.
“Good for you,” I said to Lisa. “Tell David I said the contract for Vanta just went through. 500 units. My name on the label. Not his.”
Lisa’s smile faltered. Just a little.
“We’ll see how long that lasts,” she said.
Then she walked away, heels clicking.
By the time we got home I was running on coffee and rage.
Ms. Reyes had sent over fabric swatches. Black silk. Black wool. Black leather.
I spread them across the coffee table and started pinning.
Ethan watched me from the couch.
“You didn’t have to do that,” he said.
“Do what?”
“Threaten Vanta. Use Blackwood Corp as leverage.”
“Yes I did,” I said, not looking up. “Because if I don’t fight, David will take it all.”
Ethan was quiet. Then: “About the photo—”
“I don’t want to talk about it,” I said.
“Sarah—”
“I said I don’t want to talk about it!”
The room went silent.
I realized my hands were shaking. I put the pin down.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered.
“You don’t have to be sorry,” Ethan said. “You’re allowed to be mad at me.”
“I’m not mad,” I said. And that was the lie. I was furious. At David. At my dad. At Ethan. At myself for not remembering. “I’m just tired.”
Ethan stood up. He came and sat on the floor next to me. Not touching. Just there.
“You’re building something real,” he said. “That’s more than David’s ever done.”
I looked at the swatches. At my name on the folder.
Maybe he was right.
At 11 PM my phone lit up.
Unknown number.
A link.
I clicked it.
It was a blog. Trashy. The kind David’s PR team paid to run stories.
EXCLUSIVE: SARAH MILLER’S SECRET PAST
“Photos from inside source show Miller heiress in hospital after 2023 accident. Sources claim Blackwood CEO paid millions to cover it up. Was it to protect her, or himself?”
And under it.
Three photos.
Me. In the hospital bed.
Me. With stitches on my forehead.
Me. And Ethan. Holding my hand.
My blood went cold.
The article went on: “Insiders say Miss Miller is unstable. That’s why her ex-fiancé David Blackham filed to freeze her shares. Concerned citizens are asking: who is really protecting Sarah Miller?”
Comments were already flooding in.
“She looks crazy.”
“Ethan Blackwood is controlling.”
“Free Sarah.”
I dropped the phone.
“Ethan,” I said. My voice was barely there.
He looked at the screen. His face went hard.
“Lisa,” he said.
“David,” I corrected. “He did this.”
I stood up. My legs felt like water.
This was it. This was the “erratic behavior” in the Cease and Desist. This was proof I was “unstable.”
This was him telling the world I was broken.
I walked to the window. The city was dark.
“They think I’m crazy,” I said.
“No they don’t,” Ethan said behind me.
“They do,” I said. “And maybe I am. I don’t even remember my own accident.”
Ethan came up behind me. He didn’t touch me.
“You’re not crazy,” he said. “You’re angry. And you should be.”
I laughed. It sounded broken. “What do I do now? Issue a statement? Cry on TV? Go back to David so he can ‘protect’ me?”
“No,” Ethan said. “You finish what you started.”
I turned around. “What?”
“S.M. Collections,” he said. “You launch it. Next week. You walk out there in your own clothes and you show them you’re not a victim. You’re the CEO’s daughter. You’re mine to protect, and I’m not ashamed of it.”
Mine to protect.
The words should’ve scared me.
Instead they made me stand up straighter.
“Next week?” I said.
“Next week,” Ethan said. “We’ll rent a space. Invite press. Let them take pictures of you in black, alive, and running a company.”
I nodded. Once.
Okay.
I went back to the table. Picked up the pin.
My phone buzzed again.
David.
“Saw the article. Come home, Sarah. Before you embarrass yourself more. I can fix this.”
I blocked him.
Then I opened a new tab.
S.M. COLLECTIONS - LAUNCH INVITE
“Join Sarah Miller for the debut of S.M. Collections.
Black. Sharp. No apologies.”
“Location: TBA. One week.”
I hit send to Ms. Reyes.
She replied in 30 seconds: “Done. Venue booked. Press list sent. You sure?”
I typed back: “Yes.”
2:13 AM.
I couldn’t sleep again. So I was going over the lookbook.
The doorbell rang.
Not a pounding this time. A soft chime.
Ethan was already at the door before I could move.
He opened it.
A delivery guy.
“Package for Miss Miller,” he said.
Ethan took it. A small black box. No return address.
He brought it to me.
“Don’t open it,” he said.
I did anyway.
Inside: a single white lily.
And a note.
“You looked beautiful in white, Sarah.
You looked dead in the hospital.
Which do you prefer?”
-D
The flower fell from my hand.
Ethan picked up the box. His knuckles were white.
“I’m calling security,” he said.
But I wasn’t listening.
Because under the lily, tucked into the bottom of the box, was another photo.
It was new.
Taken today.
Me. Leaving Vanta with Ethan.
David was watching us.
00:04:58. The red numbers burned into my eyes. The cathedral had turned into hell in 10 seconds. Screams. Chair falling .A baby crying somewhere in the back. The priest dropped the bible, clutching his chest like he was having a heart attack. And through it all, cameras. Dozens of them. Live-streaming the moment “the broken wife” chose between her husband and her lover. In all these, David didn't move an inch. His hand was still locked around mine. The whole building was surrounded by the FBI. And he was smiling at me. Like this was exactly what he wanted. “Get your hands off her,” an FBI agent yelled, shoving between us with a gun pointing at David.David raised his cuffed hands in surrender, but he didn’t let go of my fingers right away. He squeezed it twice. “5 minutes, Sarah. That's all you have to save him." A code. Our old code. " I’m here. I’m not leaving you.”The same squeeze he gave me on our first wedding day. I wanted to vomit. David leaned in with his lips a
SARAH'S POVThe TV kept looping it. *DAVID BLACKHAM ESCAPES FROM PRISON. CONSIDERED ARMED AND DANGEROUS.*Ethan was already shouting into his phone. “I want every exit sealed. Now.”My hands wouldn’t stop shaking, because 30 seconds ago my phone buzzed showing a photo. Ethan. Asleep in his own bed, bare chest, mouth open. And in the doorway behind him, a shadow of a man watching.“He was here,” I whispered. “Last night. While we were kissing downstairs.”Ethan threw his phone. “Call security!”But it was too late. The front door buzzer went off. Not the building. The penthouse door. The door bell rang. All of us froze. Ethan pulled a gun from his drawer, the two security guards drew theirs too.“Who is it?” Ethan yelled toward the door.A voice muffled through the wood sounding calm and familiar. “Delivery for Ms. Miller.”It wasn’t a delivery. Ethan motioned to the guard. The guard looked through the peephole. Then he shook his head. “No one there.”Ethan opened the door anyw
The photo wasn’t me. But it looked like me. Same coat. Same hair. Same slump on the courthouse steps. Except my eyes were closed. And there was blood on my shirt. “BREAKING: SARAH MILLER COLLAPSES OUTSIDE COURTHOUSE. RUSHED TO HOSPITAL. PREGNANCY COMPLICATIONS SUSPECTED.”The comments were already there. “See? She’s hiding it.”“Poor babies.” “David deserves to know.” I was sitting in Ethan’s car. Alive. Breathing. 4 hours from the hearing. And the whole internet thought I was in the ER losing twins. “Who took that?” Ethan said. His voice was low and Angered.“David,” I said. “Has to be. No one else benefits.”Ethan threw the phone in the backseat. “We’re going in early. We’re going to the judge’s chambers. Now.”“Will that help?” I asked. “It’ll help if we do it before they arrest you for faking a collapse,” Ethan said. I laughed like a sob. Then we drove. People were looking at their phones and then at me. Whispering. When we got to the courthouse, reporters were already
I stared at the text until the words stopped making sense. “48 hours, Sarah. Come to the hearing and admit it’s mine. Or I release the sonogram of the twins.”Twins. David was in prison. In cuffs. And he was still doing this. Ethan’s arms were still around me from five seconds. I pulled back. “I need air,” I said. “Sarah—” “I need air.” I walked to the window of his penthouse. 40 floors up, the night looked like a field of stars. None of them felt like mine. My phone buzzed again. Ms. Reyes. Then the board. Then a reporter. Then my dad’s old lawyer. I silenced all of it. Ethan came up behind me but didn’t touch me. “We’ll fight it,” he said. “The sonogram is fake. We can prove it.”“How?” I said. My voice sounded flat. Even to me. “He used my name. My insurance. A real hospital. Someone on the inside took his money and now I look like a liar who’s trying to hide her pregnancy.”“It’s not your fault,” Ethan said. “It is,” I said. “Because I married him. Because I was stupid
I didn’t sleep. I tried, but it wasn't forthcoming. I laid in Ethan’s guest bed for 4 hours staring at the ceiling. Counting the cracks. Counting my breaths. Counting all the ways David could still get to me. The note was still in my bag. “You think it’s over? It’s just starting.” -DAnd the photo. Me asleep in bed. while I was at the hospital with Nina. He was in my apartment. He knew where I slept. He knew when I was gone. At 3:17 AM I gave up. I walked out to Ethan’s living room. It was all glass and cold light. The city below looked peaceful. Like none of this was happening. Ethan was already there. On the couch, shirt off. Laptop open. He looked up when he heard me. “Couldn’t sleep?”“Obviously,” I said. I pulled his blanket around me and sat on the other end of the couch. Not too close. “You want tea? Water? To burn something down?” he asked. I almost smiled. “Water.”He got up and came back with two glasses. Handed me one. His fingers brushed mine. “You’re shaking,
*9:57*The countdown was burning into my eyes. Ethan was already running. He had my hand in his and we were flying down the hallway of Blackwood Tower. Behind us, his PR team was screaming into phones. "Get me the address!" Ethan barked at one of his guys. "Trace the livestream. Now!" I could barely breathe. Nina, tied up with a knife. And 10 minutes. "Where is she?" I said. My voice came out cracked. "We’ll find her," Ethan said. He shoved me into the elevator and hit B3. The parking garage. "We have to." The elevator doors closed. For three seconds it was just us and the red numbers counting down. *9:55*"Did you see her?" I asked. "Did she look hurt?" "No," Ethan said. But his jaw was tight. "Not yet." The doors opened and we ran. His car was already idling. Two guards jumped in the front. "Drive," Ethan said. The car screeched out. I had my phone in my hand. I refreshed the link David sent but nothing showed. Just blank. "He cut the stream," I said. "Good," Ethan sa
