MasukEvelyn Pov
The man behind the wheel of the black SUV was gone before I could get a proper look at his face.
I rushed to the front window, but all I caught was the vehicle turning at the end of the street. My fingers tightened around my phone as I reread Damien's message.
You have one chance to change what happened to you. This time, find me before December 24.
Then the second message.
Don't trust the man who will knock on your door tonight.
“What the hell does that mean?” I whispered.
“Evelyn, are you talking to yourself again?”
I turned around.
Ethan stood in the kitchen doorway, looking at me as if I had personally offended him by existing. He wore his expensive watch, a navy shirt, and the smug expression of a man who had never seriously considered the possibility that his life might fall apart.
I wanted to throw my phone at his head.
Instead, I smiled.
“I'm trying to figure out why you haven't eaten your breakfast.”
He glanced at the plate on the counter. “Because you haven't made it.”
I stared at him.
“You're standing three feet away from the bread, Ethan. The toaster is right beside it. I'm sure you'll survive.”
His mouth fell open. “Excuse me?”
“You heard me.”
For a moment, I thought he might actually laugh. Then his expression hardened.
“What has gotten into you lately? First, you're acting strange, and now you think you can speak to me however you want?”
I picked up my coffee.
“I'm not speaking to you however I want. I'm speaking to you exactly how you deserve.”
His face turned red. “Watch your mouth, Evelyn. I don't have time for your attitude.”
“Then you should leave. Your meeting is waiting.”
I walked past him before he could respond.
My heart was racing, but I refused to turn around. In my previous life, I had spent years trying to avoid upsetting Ethan. I had learned to measure my words, soften my opinions, and apologize even when I had done nothing wrong.
I had mistaken his temper for something I needed to manage.
Never again.
I went upstairs, locked the bedroom door, and opened my laptop. Before I could do anything else, I needed to establish how much money I could access without Ethan interfering.
My personal savings were still intact, but the money in our joint account was another matter.
I logged in.
Then I stopped breathing.
The balance was nearly twelve thousand dollars lower than I remembered.
I checked the recent transactions. Three transfers had been made over the previous two weeks, each sent to the same unfamiliar account.
The first was for three thousand dollars.
The second was for four thousand.
The third was for five thousand.
All three had been authorized through Ethan's access.
I stared at the screen, my fingers growing cold.
I remembered this.
Not the exact amounts, but the feeling of sitting at the kitchen table in my previous life, trying to work out why our savings had disappeared so quickly. Ethan had blamed his business, the rising cost of living, and unexpected expenses. I had believed him because I thought we were building a future together.
Later, after the outbreak, I learned that he had been helping Vanessa pay for an apartment before the world collapsed.
I had financed their affair without even knowing it.
“Oh, you selfish bastard,” I whispered.
I downloaded the transaction records and saved copies to a private folder. Then I changed my personal email password, enabled two-factor authentication, and checked which accounts were linked to our shared devices.
I wasn't going to confront Ethan without proof.
I was going to protect myself first.
My phone rang.
The number was unfamiliar, but I answered anyway.
“Hello?”
“Evelyn Hart?”
“Yes…. Who is this?”
“Damien Cross.”
I stood so quickly that my chair rolled backward. “How did you get my number?”
Evelyn's Pov “Evelyn, please open the door!”Vanessa's voice shook through the entrance, followed by another desperate knock. I stood several feet away, staring at the blood smeared across her blouse. For a woman who had spent the past three months sleeping with my husband behind my back, she looked terrified enough to forget we were enemies.“Evelyn, I know you're there. Please, you have to help me!”I approached the door but kept the deadbolt in place.“What's wrong with you, Vanessa?”She looked over her shoulder toward the street. “Something happened. Please, just let me inside. I'll explain everything.”“Start explaining now.”“Evelyn, I can't stand out here!”“You seem to have plenty of energy for someone who drove to my house without telling me why.”Her expression crumpled. “Please don't do this. I'm bleeding.”I looked at the stain spreading across her blouse. It was dark enough to be blood, but I couldn't tell where it came from or how badly she was injured. For one dangero
Evelyn's Pov“You gave it to my assistant when you contacted the real estate agent about the property.”That sounded plausible, which annoyed me because I had been hoping for an answer that would make sense of his messages.“Were you outside my house just now?”A brief silence followed. “I was in the neighborhood.”“That isn't what I asked.”“Then ask a better question.”I closed my eyes.“Are you always this irritating, or do you reserve it for women you've frightened half to death?”“I haven't frightened you half to death. You're still talking.”I nearly threw the phone.“Listen carefully, Mr. Cross. I have no idea who you are, why you keep sending me messages about a future you claim to know nothing about, or why you appear to be following me. If you want me to trust you, you're going to have to do better than mysterious warnings.”“I agree.”His calm response threw me off.“You agree?”“Yes. Which is why I'm telling you to check your bank account before your husband empties it.”

Evelyn Pov I woke with a gasp, clawing at my chest as if I were still fighting for air.My hands struck soft sheets instead of frozen concrete.I froze. The room was warm. Sunlight filtered through cream curtains, and the familiar hum of the air conditioner filled the silence. My bedside lamp stood beside a glass of water, while my phone lay on the nightstand, plugged into its charger.I knew this room.I had chosen every piece of furniture myself.Slowly, I lifted my hands. No frostbite…no blood. No swollen fingers.I scrambled out of bed and rushed into the bathroom, nearly slipping on the tiled floor. The woman staring back at me in the mirror was younger, healthier, and untouched by the months of hunger that had hollowed out my face.I touched my cheeks. Then my neck. Then the place where the infected had torn through my coat and left me bleeding in the snow.Nothing.“No,” I whispered. “No, this isn't possible.”I stumbled back into the bedroom and snatched up my phone. The date
EVELYN'S POV“Ethan!” I struck the glass with my fist. “You don't get to do this to me! I gave you everything!”He looked at me one last time. “You should have kept something for yourself, then.”The words settled between us then he walked away.Vanessa followed him, still wearing my sweater.I watched them disappear down the hallway, and something inside me finally broke. Not because I was cold or because I was hungry. But because the man I had spent three years loving had just taught me the ugliest lesson of my life.Love did not make people loyal.Sacrifice did not make people grateful. And being a good woman did not guarantee that anyone would be good to you in return.I slid down the wall until I was sitting on the frozen ground. My fingers had become stiff, and every breath burned in my chest. The wind carried the distant sounds of screaming through the abandoned parking lot.Somewhere beyond the barricades, an infected person slammed into a vehicle. The alarm began blaring, its
CHAPTER ONEMy Husband Locked me out in a place like this, leaving me to die here.“Open this fucking door, Ethan! You can hate me tomorrow, but if you leave me out here tonight, I'll die!”I slammed both hands against the reinforced glass, ignoring the pain shooting through my fingers. Snow clung to my eyelashes, my knees were shaking, and I could barely feel my feet inside my frozen boots. Beyond the door, the generator hummed, the fireplace glowed, and my husband stood beside the woman who had helped him destroy my life.Ethan looked at me as if I were a stranger begging outside a grocery store.“Stop making a scene, Evelyn. You're frightening everyone inside.”I stared at him in disbelief. “A scene? There are infected people roaming the streets, half the city has lost power, and you're worried about me making a scene?”“Keep your voice down,” he snapped. “You know how much stress Vanessa is under.”Vanessa stood behind him in my cream-colored sweater, the one I had searched for th
