Adrian

The phone call ended with an apology that meant nothing. The IRS director on the other end said he was sorry that he could not hold Vivian longer. I told him it was nothing and then I cut the call.

My frown deepened after I put the phone down. I placed the phone on the bathroom counter and looked at myself in the mirror. I was wrapped in a bathrobe that felt too heavy. I stared at my own figure for a long time.

I suddenly realized that I had not had a shave or a haircut in a long time. M

  • MY HUSBAND KILLED OUR MARRIAGE. I BURIED HIS EMPIRE.    Chapter 72

VivianCurrently, the afternoon sun was hot and the children were singing in the yard. I was visiting an orphanage home. It was part of an ongoing series of charity events I had been doing to regain public trust after the IRS scandal. The orphanage was called Hope House. There were thirty children there. They all wore clean uniforms."Miss Sinclair, thank you for coming," the director said. She was a middle-aged woman with a kind face."Thank you for having me," I said.We spent two hours together. I played with the children. I read them books. I helped them with their lunch. They were happy to see me.One little girl held my hand tightly."Will you come again?" she asked me."Yes, I will come again," I said to her.My phone rang when I was leaving the building. I saw Damien's name on the screen.Damien called and asked how I was doing as I entered my car while waving at the kids who seemed distraught at my leaving."How are you doing?" Damien asked when I answered."I am fine," I rep

AdrianEveryone in the room was astonished when Mrs. Grant abstained. This was not the outcome that should have occurred. Thomas had expected her to vote for removal. I had hoped she would vote for me to stay. No one expected her to abstain. The man who had proposed the vote frowned and asked the woman why she had abstained."Mrs. Grant, why did you abstain?" Thomas asked. His voice was tight with anger. "You raised your hand and then you dropped it. Why?""My vote is mine to make," Mrs. Grant said. She looked at him calmly. "Or were you expecting a specific outcome before we even voted? Did you have an intended outcome before the meeting started?""That is not what I meant," Thomas said."It sounded like what you meant," Mrs. Grant said.Seeing her fire back at Thomas made me think that Darren was behind this entire vote. Darren had the power to influence board members. Darren could have paid Mrs. Grant to vote against me, but she did not.She was not a fan of mine either, but she sa

AdrianThe boardroom was silent when I entered. The air was heavy and tense. A member of the board plainly told me that this was all my fault like it was a final verdict."Adrian, this is all your fault," Thomas said. He did not even look at me when he said it. "This mess is because of you."I could see the gloating and joy at my predicament displayed on the eyes of the board members. They were happy to see me in trouble."I understand you are upset," I said."Upset?" Thomas said. "We are more than upset. We lost two major suppliers in one morning.""I know," I said.I could not argue against it, I would have to be on the defensive today. I knew that if I shouted, I would lose completely."I never expected the man to be such a bad egg," I told them. "I trusted Mark and he betrayed our agreement. I will make things right. I will find new suppliers."One of the execs remarked sharply that I said that same thing the first time I messed up and got them into the Swiss bank's claws."You sa

VivianThe news on the television in the car was loud and clear. Whatever Damien did was definitely way overboard. But I liked it.Watching the newsroom channels reveal that the IRS case against me had been fabricated, cooked up by a certain executive in Lancaster industries and an officer at the IRS district, I found it mind blowing. The anchor was reading the statement seriously."Today the IRS issued an apology to Miss Vivian Sinclair," the anchor said. "The case against her was found to be fabricated by an officer at the IRS district office who was working with an executive from Lancaster Industries."Truly, I was clean, and the IRS had apologized for their rashness, their quietness seemingly felt like an external hand was manipulating them too. I knew Damien had made that happen. I knew he had used pressure I did not have. That officer's name had been sitting in my own notes since the board meeting. Damien had only supplied the pressure I did not have. I had written down Cole's n

AdrianFor the first time in a while, I felt like I had control of something and that made me feel sublime. I had slept well. I had a plan. The pictures of Vivian were online. Her board was under pressure. My company, Lancaster, had a chance to recover. However, I got a call from my secretary early in the morning causing a frown on my face. The day had just broken and the sun was barely up."Hello?" I said when I picked up."Mr. Kane, I am sorry to call you this early," my secretary said. Her voice was nervous."What is it?" I asked."Sir, two key suppliers just sent emails," she said. "They are considering stepping back from their deal with us.""Which suppliers?" I asked."The two from the north district," she said. "The nearly two hundred million dollar deal."I was shocked and then I was incensed when I learnt that two key suppliers had just considered stepping back from their nearly two hundred million dollar deal."Why?" I asked, barely restraining my anger. "Why would they step

VivianThe door opened and Damien walked in that evening. When Damien arrived, I saw he was slightly rattled. His tie was loose and his hair was a little messy. He looked like he had been thinking too much.I did not ask him why he looked that way. I just hugged him with a kiss on his lips while hurrying him to the dining table where I had set everything."Welcome home," I said."Thank you," he said. He chuckled a little and looked at the table. "What is all this?""Food," I said. "I made dinner for us."He asked what was going on with a chuckle as he sat down."What is going on?" he asked. "You cooked all this food. Did something happen?""Can I not take care of my husband?" I asked. "Plus, I saw some recipes I had been dying to practice and who was the best test subject for my cooking?""Your husband, of course," he said."Exactly," I said. Both of us chuckled and I sighed in relief at the reduced tension between us. The house had felt heavy for weeks. Tonight it felt lighter.Dinne
