CHAPTER 6-THE INTERVIEW

Anna's POV

The door opened and I stepped in nervously.

The office was larger than I expected. Floor-to-ceiling windows stretched across one wall, the city spread out below like a living map. Everything was clean, sharp, and expensive. The kind of space that made you feel like you should apologize for existing in it.

My heart was already racing.

I had waited outside for almost forty minutes. Other candidates sat around me in the waiting area, men and women with perfect posture, expensive watches, résumés that probably glowed in the dark. One woman had been talking about her time at a firm in Singapore. Another mentioned a project in Dubai. I kept my hands in my lap and stared at the floor, repeating the same silent promise over and over.

“For Amyra. You can’t fail this.”

Now I am here, unsure of what my fate was.

A man sat behind the desk at the far end of the room. He didn’t look up immediately. He was writing something, the pen moving in controlled, precise strokes. His sleeves were rolled to the elbows. Very broad shoulders and dark neatly brushed hair. The kind of presence that filled a room without effort.

I stopped a few steps from the desk, waiting.

He finished the note, set the pen down, and finally lifted his head.

Our eyes met and I felt the world stop for a moment.

For what seemed like forever, nothing moved. Not the air, not the city outside the glass, not even my breath. Something cold and sharp slid down my spine. My pulse slammed against my throat so hard I felt dizzy.

It was him!

Five years had gone by, he now looked sharper and colder. The soft edges of that night were gone. But the shape of his face, the set of his jaw, the intensity in his eyes…,it was the same man who had held me in a hotel room while the world outside fell apart.

My fingers curled into fists at my sides as I forced myself to breathe.

He stared at me the same way. Not recognition exactly but something close, something searching. His brows drew together slightly, as if a thought had caught him off guard.

I opened my mouth, then closed it. The introduction I had rehearsed a hundred times disappeared.

He recovered first.

“Sit,” he said. His voice was low, controlled, nothing like the rough, whiskey-edged tone I half-remembered.

I moved to the chair in front of his desk and sat carefully, spine straight, hands folded. My palms were damp. I pressed them against my skirt.

He opened a folder, my folder.

“Anna Li,” he said, reading. “You applied for the Eco-City Project lead position.”

“Yes.” My voice came out steady, barely.

He flipped a page. “Your experience is… limited compared to the other candidates.”

The words landed like a quiet cut. I kept my face still.

“I’ve worked on three major residential projects and two mixed-use developments,” I said. “I know my résumé isn’t the longest in the pile. But I solve problems. That’s what I do.”

He looked up again. Those eyes. The same eyes that had watched me fall apart and then put me back together with his hands and mouth in the dark.

My chest tightened.

“Tell me about the heat island issue on the Eco-City Project,” he said. “How would you approach it differently from the current design?”

I forced my mind to focus. This was the job. This was Amyra’s hospital bills. This was the difference between surviving and drowning.

“The current plan leans too heavily on mature vegetation,” I said. “It takes too long. I would integrate reflective materials and elevated green corridors from the start, shade structures that double as solar collectors, water features designed for evaporative cooling, not just aesthetics. The goal is immediate relief, not a fifteen-year promise.”

He watched me the entire time I spoke. Not nodding. Not interrupting. Just watching, as if measuring every word.

When I finished, silence stretched between us.

My pulse was still too fast. Sitting this close, I could see the faint line of a scar near his left eyebrow that I didn’t remember. The way his throat moved when he swallowed. The controlled stillness of his hands on the desk.

He closed the folder slowly.

“Why do you want this position, Ms. Li?”

The question was simple, but the answer wasn’t!.

Because my daughter has a heart condition and the bills never stop. Because my parents are aging and the boutique can’t carry us forever. Because I am tired of being one emergency away from breaking.

I couldn’t say any of that.

“Because the project matters,” I said instead. “And I’m good at making things work when the easy solutions fail.”

Something shifted in his expression. Barely there, just a flicker.

He leaned back in his chair. The leather creaked softly.

“You’re nervous,” he said.

It wasn’t a question.

I met his gaze and refused to look away. “Yes.”

“Most people try to hide it.”

“I’m not most people.”

The corner of his mouth almost moved. Almost.

Outside the glass, the city kept moving. Inside the office, the air felt too thin.

He studied me for a long moment. Too long. The same strange pull from five years ago stirred in my stomach, half memory, half fear.

I had walked out of that hotel room believing that night was a closed door, something finished, something that belonged to a broken version of myself I no longer claimed.

Now the door was open again!.

He closed the folder completely and rested one hand on top of it.

“We’ll be in touch, Ms. Li.”

The words were dismissal. Professional!. Final!.

My legs felt unsteady as I stood up. I nodded once, turned, and walked toward the door without looking back.

Behind me, I heard the faint sound of a chair shifting.

I reached for the handle.

My heart was still slamming against my ribs. My skin felt too tight. Every step away from his desk felt like walking through water.

I pulled the door open.

And the only thought left in my head was the one I couldn’t silence.

It can’t be him…it definitely can't.

ANDREA'S OFFICE Andreas checked the time once more, fourteen minutes past the scheduled start. The Eco-City files lay open on his desk, annotated and ready. He had cleared the slot specifically. People who worked under him learned quickly that cleared slots were not suggestions. He signed off on a separate procurement note with two precise strokes of the pen, then returned his attention to the empty chair across from him. The silence in the office stretched, broken only by the low hum of the climate system. He set the pen down with deliberate care and leaned back, gaze fixed on the glass wall that looked out over the open floor. No movement toward his door. No hurried figure carrying a laptop. His jaw tightened. He reached for the internal line, fingers hovering above the button, then paused when a light knock sounded.Emily stepped in, tablet held against her side. Her expression was carefully neutral, the same controlled composure she used when delivering information that might pr

  • MY ONE-NIGHT STAND BOSS   CHAPTER 20-A GHOST FROM THE PAST

Anna's POV The next morning, I walked Amyra to the school gate and waited until she disappeared inside with the other children. Teacher Lin was already standing near the entrance, folder in hand. She caught my eye and stepped closer.“Ms. Li. Thank you for making time.”I nodded once, fingers tightening around the strap of my bag. I could already guess what she wanted to talk to me about. “You wanted to speak about Amyra”, I asked calmly.Teacher Lin’s voice stayed low. “She’s been participating well, but I’ve noticed she always more rest after longer activities. The interschool singing competition is in three weeks and she wants to join. I think it’s good for her, but I'm afraid rehearsal stretches would be too stressful for her to handle. I wanted you to know so you can decide.”My chest tightened. I kept my face steady and swallowed once before answering. “If she wants to join the competition, then please let her. I'll speak with her and make sure she's careful. You can keep the

  • MY ONE-NIGHT STAND BOSS   CHAPTER 19- MY SLEEPING PRINCESS

Anna's POV It was already after nine when I got home. The living room light was still on. Mama sat on the sofa with a folded scarf in her lap. Papa looked up from the small table where he had been sorting pharmacy receipts.“You’re late again,” Mama said, but her voice held no sharp edge.“The work ran long.” I set my bag down and loosened the top button of my blouse. “Everything is fine. The project is moving.”Papa nodded once. “Good. We’re proud of you.”Mama’s hands stilled on the scarf. “As long as you’re eating and sleeping a little.”“I am.” I gave them both a small smile that felt thinner than I intended. “I’m going to check on Amyra.”They did not stop me.I pushed her door open carefully. The room was dim, lit only by the soft glow of the night-light she still needed. Amyra lay on her side, one arm tucked under the pillow, the other resting lightly over her chest the way she always slept. Her curls had spilled across the pillow. The yellow dress from the morning was folded

  • MY ONE-NIGHT STAND BOSS   CHAPTER 18- MORE THAN ONE BOSS

Anna's POV The messages kept arriving.I finished the wind-load notes and sent the revised model back to Jun with three clear instructions. Before the reply came, Mei appeared at my door with a cost summary from Finance. The material substitution they proposed would save money on the east tower cladding but changed the thermal performance enough to affect the environmental targets. I compared the two reports side by side, marked the conflicting lines, and called the Procurement desk.A woman named Helen answered. Her voice was brisk, already mid-calculation on another project. I explained the conflict without raising my tone. She listened, asked for the exact specification numbers, and promised a revised quote by mid-afternoon. I thanked her and ended the call, then forwarded the marked pages to the Environmental team with a short note requesting their assessment of the performance drop.Emily returned with a tablet full of coordination requests. We sat at the side table and worked t

  • MY ONE-NIGHT STAND BOSS   CHAPTER 17-THE RULE EVERYONE FEARED

Anna's POV I stepped through the glass doors of Mo Ting Global twelve minutes past the hour. My pulse sat high in my throat. The company’s rules on punctuality were not suggestions. Mr. Kim had made that clear on the first day, and every floor still moved as if those rules were written into the walls. I expected someone to stop me…a note, a look or a quiet summons. Instead the lobby continued its usual flow of people with passes and purpose. I kept my head level and walked toward the elevators, fingers tight around the strap of my bag. On the fifty-eighth floor, the Planning & Development Division was already working. People's working screens glowed, conversations stayed low. I moved through the open area toward the cluster of workstations that belonged to the Eco-City team and into the small office assigned to me as Assistant Architectural Director. The door closed behind me with a soft click. I set my bag down, sat, and opened the laptop before my hands could start to shake.

  • MY ONE-NIGHT STAND BOSS   CHAPTER 16-A MORNING LIKE ANY OTHER

Anna's povI was already dressed when I opened Amyra’s door.“Time to get up, baby”, I said as I entered Amyra's room. She lay curled on her side, one arm under the pillow, and the other resting lightly over her chest. I sat on the edge of the mattress and brushed a curl from her forehead. Her eyes opened slowly. She blinked, then stretched both arms until her small fists trembled in the air. I waited until she sat up before guiding her toward the bathroom. The water ran warm. I helped her out of her sleep shirt and into the tub, washing her hair carefully so the soap would not sting her eyes. She hummed the days-of-the-week song under her breath while I rinsed the last of the shampoo. When I lifted her out and wrapped the towel around her shoulders, she leaned against me for a moment, still half-asleep, before I dried her off and reached for the yellow dress with the stars along the hem.She stood still while I buttoned the back, then turned in a slow circle so the skirt would flare. I
