The drive north felt endless, the detective's team coordinating in low, urgent voices over the radio while Olivia sat rigid beside me, her hands white-knuckled around each other in her lap. Neither of us spoke much, the silence heavy with everything we couldn't afford to think about too directly, not if we wanted to stay steady enough to actually help when the moment came.

I kept glancing at her throughout the drive, at the fierce, unwavering focus holding her together, and found myself thinking, absurdly, of the first night I'd watched her play with Noah on Margaret's living room floor, the careful, guarded way she had let me in only inch by inch, and how far we had both come since then. I hoped, with an intensity that ached, that we would have the chance to come further still.

We reached the perimeter of the property just before three in the morning, the lodge and the smaller building beside it barely visible through the trees under a sky heavy with clouds. Officers moved into position around us, quiet and efficient, the kind of practiced silence that told me this wasn't their first time approaching a situation like this one, even as it was unmistakably mine.

"You stay in the car," I told Olivia, my voice hard with a fear I couldn't fully mask.

"No."

"Olivia—"

"He is my son too, Ethan." Her voice broke on the words, but her eyes held steady, fierce, unmovable. "I have protected him alone for six years. I am not sitting in a car while strangers decide whether he lives or dies. I am going in there."

I didn't have time to argue further, and some part of me, the part that had spent weeks watching her prove exactly how strong she actually was, understood I wouldn't win this fight anyway. "Stay behind me," I said instead. "Please."

She nodded, and we moved forward together, low and fast, following the detective's lead through the tree line toward the smaller building's side entrance.

The team moved in fast once the signal came, breaching the door with a speed and precision that left my ears ringing, shouting erupting instantly from somewhere inside the darkened structure. I heard a man's voice, sharp with panic, and another voice answering, and then the unmistakable sound of a struggle breaking out somewhere beyond the door.

"Ethan!" Olivia's hand gripped my arm hard.

"Stay with me," I said, and we pushed forward together, past officers securing the front room, toward a narrow hallway where a single door stood slightly ajar at the far end.

We found him in a small back room, huddled in the corner, his eyes wide with terror in the beam of a flashlight. "Noah!"

He looked up at the sound of my voice and scrambled forward, and I swept him into my arms, holding him so tightly I probably hurt him, though he clung back just as hard, his small body shaking with sobs against my chest.

"I've got you," I said, my own voice breaking completely. "I've got you. You're safe. You're safe now."

Behind us, the chaos hadn't settled. A man I recognized instantly as Grant Whitfield burst through the doorway, a gun raised, his face wild with the panic of someone who understood exactly how badly this had all gone wrong for him.

"Put him down," Whitfield shouted. "Put the boy down."

"Ethan, go," Olivia said, stepping directly between me and Whitfield's line of sight, her arms spread wide, her body a shield between the gun and everything I loved most in the world. "Get him out of here. Now."

"Olivia—"

"Go!"

I turned, shielding Noah's body with my own, moving fast toward the door as gunfire erupted behind me, deafening in the small room, echoing off the walls in a way that seemed to stretch time itself into something slow and unbearable. I got Noah into the hallway, into the arms of a waiting officer, screaming for someone to get him to safety, and turned back toward the chaos I'd just fled.

Olivia was on the ground.

I don't remember crossing the room. I don't remember the officers finally subduing Whitfield, wrestling him to the ground somewhere behind me, don't remember anything except dropping to my knees beside her, my hands pressing hard against the wound blooming dark and wet across her side, her face pale and slick with sweat in the flashlight's harsh beam.

"Olivia. Olivia, look at me."

Her eyes found mine, unfocused, fluttering. "Noah," she whispered. "Is he—"

"He's safe. He's safe, I promise you, he's safe." My voice cracked completely, tears blurring my vision as I pressed harder against the wound, desperate to stop something I didn't know how to stop, something too large and too final for my hands alone to hold back. "Stay with me. Please, Olivia, stay with me."

"I'm so tired," she whispered, her hand rising weakly to find mine where it pressed against her side.

"Someone get a medic in here!" I shouted, my voice raw, echoing off the walls of the small room now crowded with officers and chaos and blood. "Now! I need help now!"

Footsteps pounded toward us, someone shouting for a stretcher, for pressure, for oxygen, the words blurring together into noise I could barely process through the roar of my own pulse hammering in my ears.

Olivia's eyes were still on mine, glassy, distant, her lips moving with words I could barely hear over everything else crashing around us.

"I love you," she breathed, so faint I nearly missed it entirely. "I never stopped."

"Don't," I begged, gathering her closer, my forehead pressed against hers the way it had been that night in her bedroom, a lifetime ago, before all of this. "Don't you dare say that like it's goodbye. Stay with me. Olivia, please, stay with me."

Her eyes fluttered shut, her hand going slack in mine.

"Olivia!"

The medic reached us seconds later, shouldering me aside with practiced urgency, hands moving fast and sure over the wound I had been pressing against with nothing but desperation and my own two shaking palms. I knelt there in the wreckage of that small room, Noah's cries still audible from somewhere down the hallway where an officer held him safely away from the worst of it, and stared down at the woman who had just put herself between a bullet and our son without a single moment's hesitation.

"We need to move her now," the medic said, already calling for a stretcher, for backup, for anything that might buy the seconds standing between Olivia and whatever came next.

I stayed at her side every step of the way to the ambulance, refusing to let go of her hand even as the paramedics worked around me, her face growing paler by the second under the harsh overhead lights.

"Stay with me," I whispered, one final time, though I no longer knew if she could hear me at all. "Please. We're not done yet. Stay with me, Olivia."

The ambulance doors slammed shut, sealing me inside with her and the frantic, focused motion of strangers fighting to keep her heart beating, and somewhere behind us, growing smaller in the darkness, Noah's small silhouette stood wrapped in a blanket in an officer's arms, safe, alive, watching us disappear down the long dirt road toward whatever came next.

I stared at the name on the page, my mind refusing at first to accept what my father had written there in his own careful hand. Not Madison. Not anyone we had already suspected.Grant Whitfield. The financial director who had disappeared years ago, the man whose sudden severance had first caught my attention, the man I had spent days trying and failing to find. He hadn't vanished because Desmond had silenced him.He had vanished because he was Desmond's partner, working alongside him this entire time."He's had access to the company's internal systems for years," I said, the pieces slotting into place with sickening speed. "Even after he officially left, if he kept backdoor credentials, he could have authorized everything. The board motion. The falsified evidence against me. All of it.""He would have known exactly how to make it look like you," Olivia said. "He worked inside this company long enough to understand every system, every vulnerability."I paced the length of the study, th

  • MY SECRET ALPHA HEIR    CHAPTER 48: VICTORIA'S CONFESSION

I sat in the back seat of Ethan's car as we drove toward the bank, my hands folded tightly in my lap, and finally allowed myself to say the words I had been avoiding for seven years."I need to tell you both something before we get there," I said. "Something I haven't fully admitted, even to myself, until tonight."Olivia turned in the passenger seat to look at me, her expression guarded but attentive. "What is it, Mother?""Fear and greed made me cooperate with people I should have opposed from the very beginning." My voice shook, but I forced myself to continue, unwilling to let the confession die unfinished the way so many of my half-truths had before. "I didn't directly plan anything that happened to you, Olivia. I want you to understand that clearly. But my silence, my choice to protect my own comfort instead of speaking up when I first suspected something was wrong, helped create the conditions that allowed all of this to happen and keep happening for years.""You've already tol

I sat with Madison's confession long after Ethan left the room, the full shape of what had actually happened seven years ago finally settling into place with a clarity that made my chest ache in an entirely new way.Madison's lies hadn't been born from simple jealousy. They had been a tool, deployed at precisely the right moment to distract William, to keep him occupied with a family scandal while Desmond Cole quietly bled the company dry from the shadows he'd been hiding in for over a decade. My disappearance, my pregnancy, my six years of struggling alone in Los Angeles, all of it had been collateral damage in a war I hadn't even known existed until now."He used me," I said quietly, mostly to myself, when Ethan found me still sitting in the study an hour later. "Desmond Cole destroyed my entire life, not because of anything I did, but because I was simply in the way of a distraction he needed.""I know." Ethan sat down across from me, his own exhaustion plain across his face. "My f

"Ethan, I think whoever has your son has been planning this for far longer than either of us understood."I stared at Madison, the fury I'd been holding onto for days warring with a colder, more useful focus. "You said he called himself an old business partner of my father's. Did he ever mention a name? Desmond?"Madison's eyes widened slightly. "How do you know that name?""Because we've already found his photograph in my father's hidden files," I said. "You've been talking to Desmond Cole for eighteen months, Madison. The man my father forced out of this company over twenty years ago."She pressed a trembling hand to her mouth, the full shape of what she'd been entangled in clearly landing for the first time. "I didn't know his history with your father. I swear it. He only ever presented himself as someone with resources, someone who could help me if my own position in this family ever became unstable.""What else did he ask you to do?""Small things, at first. Confirming details ab

I stared at the message until the words blurred together, my hands gripping the phone so hard I half expected the screen to crack beneath my fingers. Every instinct in me screamed to call the board, to salvage whatever remained of my position at Hayes Corporation before the entire structure collapsed around me.I ignored every single one of those instincts completely."I don't care about the company," I said, my voice steadier than I felt, steadier than I had any right to feel with my son's photograph still glowing on my screen. "Whatever it costs, whatever I lose, none of it matters until Noah is safe."Olivia stood beside me, her face pale but resolute, the stuffed wolf still clutched in one hand like a talisman she refused to set down. "We're not stopping the investigation," she said. "That's exactly what they want, and if we stop now, they'll have no reason to keep him alive once they get whatever else they're actually after.""I know." I paced the length of the security office, m
