The moment I fired the first shot, Isabella burst out of the car along with her sister without looking back. They sprinted into the street and disappeared in seconds, slipping around the nearest corner they found. Seeing how she moved with precision and focus told me this wasn’t her first time encountering such a situation. Any woman would have panicked herself into doing something stupid, but she didn’t waver one bit.
A flurry of bullets was fired at me, snapping me out of my momentary distraction, causing me to duck my head back into the armored vehicle. My attackers were relentless, but I remained unfazed about the situation. Truth was, they couldn’t do shit to me as long as I stayed inside, and they knew it.
So, they started to advance.
I fired a couple of shots to slow their movement before slamming the door shut. Shifting into reverse, I pressed the accelerator with my foot, one hand braced against the headrest beside me as the car lurched backward across the asphalt. More bullets hit the windshield, but it didn’t break, so I drove away from their line of fire.
Once the car entered the street once again, I reached for my phone.
The number I called was on my second speed dial. It connected after two rings, like it always did.
“Piero,” I said calmly, my eyes flicking to the side view mirror to make sure no one was still following me. “I need backup. ASAP.”
There was a pause. “Where are you?”
I told him my location, and then he hung up. Since the situation was already being taken care of, I no longer bothered about the people chasing us and focused on finding Isabella and her sister. My instincts told me they hadn’t gone very far, probably in one of the dark alleys down the other side of the street.
Personally, I didn’t give a fuck about them.
From the moment I saw that lady, I knew she’d be trouble. She kept bowing her head and didn’t speak to others unless spoken to. If she had married one of those old men on the East Coast, she would have been the perfect, submissive wife, but things were quite different here. Our men liked our women more rebellious and opinionated, but that was not my problem.
The problem was that her presence right now put me in danger. It also meant that she and her sister needed to disappear before my uncle discovered the truth about one of the biggest mistakes I have ever made in my life. If I did not take care of this problem on time, I would surely lose my life.
My grip on the steering wheel tightened the more I thought about it. As much as I wanted to take advantage of the present situation, now was not the appropriate time to get rid of her. It would be difficult to explain to my uncle if his wife died on her wedding day. And Don Salvatore was not a man who tolerated mistakes.
So, I parked the car somewhere discreet before searching for them on foot. There was no way Isabella could have gone far with the heavy wedding dress she wore and a child trailing behind her, but I refused to be careless about the situation.
After searching for a few more minutes, I grew irritated when I didn’t find her. If she were smart, she should have hidden in a fire escape or behind some dumpster nearby, but the lady and her little sister seemed to have vanished completely without a trace. Just when I was contemplating reaching out to my uncle to inform him of the situation, my steps slowed just when I was about to walk past the back entrance of a building.
My eyes narrowed at the door that swayed slightly open. I gripped my gun tight as I edged towards the door.
Had she gone in there?
I pushed open the door with one hand while holding my weapon in the other, letting sunlight illuminate the entire place. It looked like the back kitchen of a restaurant, but there was no sign of activity in the place. I scanned the area one more time before turning around to leave.
That’s when I heard it.
A faint whimper from my right.
I quickly changed directions to track down the sound, but I barely took three steps before I felt something cold and sharp nestled against my throat. My mafia instincts immediately kicked into full gear as I shot out to grab the wrist holding the knife. With a sharp twist, I disarmed my attacker with the knife in less than five seconds, but then a feminine cry pierced through my ears afterward.
Then, I realized it was Isabella.
I quickly released her wrist and shoved her away from me. Her little sister came out of her hiding place behind a stainless-steel counter, her tiny hands still clamped firmly over her mouth.
The sight made me frown. “Seriously? This was the place you decided to hide?”
Isabella didn’t respond, but instead, glared at me while rubbing her aching wrist. Her black, luscious hair was no longer in a low bun, but instead fell across her bare shoulders in waves. Her honey-brown eyes and light freckles scattered across her cheeks gave her a soft glow despite the defiant aura she radiated.
Interesting.
I pushed back my thoughts before saying to her, “We need to leave right now.”
“Yeah, no shit,” she mumbled under her breath.
My eyebrows shot up after hearing her cuss, but what really shocked me was when she picked the knife from the floor and cut through the dirty layers of the skirt, revealing her silver heels in one clean motion. Once she was done, she let go of the knife and reached for her sister’s hand.
Then she walked past me without another word.
I watched her for a second longer than necessary, watching her curvy body sway with those smooth, long legs.
Yeah, she was definitely going to be a problem.
CHIARA As the door clicked shut behind the last of the employees, the atmosphere in the office shifted dramatically, leaving Don Salvatore and me alone in a thick, charged silence. He stood, his broad shoulders filling the space with an imposing presence, and pulled me into his firm, muscled chest, enveloping me in his warmth. A shiver ran through me as he began to place soft, lingering kisses along the sensitive skin of my neck. “Have I told you that you look absolutely stunning, mia cara moglie?” he murmured, his breath warm against my ear. “I thought you would come to find me after breakfast, but instead, you chose to spend time with your sister?” A startled gasp escaped my lips when his hand descended lower, squeezing my backside with an unexpected firmness. He buried his face in the curve of my shoulder, a low chuckle vibrating through his chest as he drew me closer. I struggled to relax, forcing my gaze to the far wall, tracing the intricate patterns carved into the polishe
STEFANOI knew how this fight was going to end before it even started. I should have backed down. It was wrong to challenge my underboss in the presence of the guards outside. Or worse, in front of a woman. But I didn't. Because he messed with me first. Riccardo marched towards me while flexing his fists. He stopped just a feet away, enough to try establish some sort of dominance. Chiara quickly entered into the house, leaving both of us alone. This time, he didn't even glance her way, because he was too pissed glaring at me. “You better watch the way you speak to me, you little piece of shit,” he spat, eyes burning. “I am still your underboss, and you will treat me with respect.”The guards instantly went still.I looked at him properly now.“You done?” I asked.Riccardo moved in a flash and grabbed my collar. The guards stepped forward but didn't make any move to separate us.This idiota was really pushing it today. And unfortunately, I had used up all my patience chasing Chiara
STEFANOI flexed my jaw as I drove Chiara and her sister back to the Romano mansion. My face still stung from the earlier slap she gave me, but at least she was no longer entertaining the idea of using her body to bargain her freedom. If it were any of my men, they would have probably agreed a long time ago. She was very attractive and her alluring figure was enough to drive any man to temptation. Including me. My hands tightened on the steering wheel. I didn't like the fact that this woman was getting under my skin. From the moment I saw her at the chapel, I hadn't been able to get her off my mind. I had no business being concerned about her actions, but somehow I ended chasing her across the city. Not that she would have made it very far. My uncle would not stop until he recovered her, dead or alive. And anyone with her would also suffer the same fate. My eyes drifted to the rearview mirror where Chiara was currently holding her sleeping sister. She hadn't spoken a single word s
CHIARAI froze at his words. He knew. I had no idea how he found out the truth. Stefano Romano knew I was not Isabella, and now he was going to tell Don Salvatore. In a fleeting moment of panic, I scanned my surroundings, desperately searching for an escape route. The bustling airport terminal was filled with travelers, oblivious to the tension that gripped me. But I quickly dismissed the idea of fleeing since Giada was still beside me. I knew I wouldn't be able to get very far with her now.Stefano's men had already arrived at the terminal, moving among the crowd dressed in tailored black suits while their steely gazes swept across the crowd like predatory hawks. There was no chance to escape anymore.Stefano must have sensed my growing despair because his grip on me tightened as he led me towards the exit. I held onto Giada with my other hand, trying to keep a calm expression so she wouldn't be scared. Once we stepped out of the airport, Stefano immediately let go of me and gestured
STEFANOFuck.Fuck, fuck, fuck."Stefano, can you stop pacing like that?" Bianca snapped, her voice sharp. "You're acting like she fled the country or something. Isabella just took her sister to get some desserts. That's it."I ignored her comment and continued trying to call the driver. That was the information I had gotten from him before we left, but now even he was not picking up my calls. My instincts kept warning me that something bad was going to happen, and I couldn't just ignore it.My mind went back to the memory of my uncle's wife sitting at the breakfast table. She looked so miserable and broken that I thought she might actually do something unreasonable, like kill herself after discovering what kind of monster she married.Turns out I was wrong. She was trying to run away instead. And that was a very bad idea. Although my uncle's wedding had been private, most of the underground world was aware that he had taken a second wife. If she fled now, unnecessary questions would
CHIARABianca stole the show as soon as we walked into the art exhibition. Everyone had their eyes on the daughter of the most powerful man in New York. The ladies instantly swarmed to her side, complimenting her dress to curry favour with her. But she ignored them all and only smiled at Stefano at her side. His expression remained calm and disinterested. I gripped my bag tighter as I looked down on my daughter. After observing the scene, it looked like they were going to be preoccupied for some time. Giada and I could still leave the city as we planned if we played our cards right.“Let's go and admire the paintings over there,” I said to my daughter. I guided Giada toward a quieter corner of the exhibition hall, away from the crowd that had gathered around Bianca. The polished marble floor reflected the glow of crystal chandeliers overhead, while soft classical music drifted through the spacious gallery. Every wall was lined with paintings of different sizes and styles, each on
CHIARAAfter breakfast, I went upstairs with Giada, purposely talking about playing a puzzle game with her. Fortunately, Don Salvatore and Riccardo decided to discuss business further in his study. Bianca must have taken Stefano to the art exhibition, so that only meant one thing. The lower floor
CHIARAA cold chill spread down my spine as I watched Bianca finally succeed in pulling Stefano off Riccardo. He shrugged off her hand before straightening his form and adjusting his suit like nothing happened. Another woman in a maid’s uniform appeared with two guards outside the door. They didn’t
CHIARALater that evening, I changed into a set of pink camisole and matching shorts to get ready for bed. My daughter, Giada, was still in the bathroom brushing her teeth, so I kept myself preoccupied by folding her dirty clothes and placing her stuffed animal, Milo, beside the pillows. As I busie
CHIARABy the time we reached the Romano estate, I was nearly asleep.Maybe it was exhaustion from the earlier incident, or my emotional distress, but my feet felt heavy when I came down from the car with my daughter. She wobbled as soon as her feet touched the ground, but a pair of strong arms cau
