MACEY

It was one day before David’s wedding, and if I was being honest, I had absolutely no business thinking about it.

I had told Sam, no, I had announced proudly, that I was not going. I had rolled my eyes, acted like the whole thing was beneath me, and even joked about how boring it would be.

And yet, here I was, sitting cross-legged on my bed with my phone in my hand, staring at Damien’s name on the screen like a complete clown.

I had no idea what had changed between last night and this morning, but sometime in the middle of the night, my stomach had twisted and my mind had started racing.

I realized something horrible. I did not want to walk into my ex’s wedding alone. Absolutely not. That was not going to happen. There was petty, and then there was stupid, and I refused to let David and his new bride think I was somewhere crying over their love story.

Me crying over their happiness was completely out of the question.

So I typed a message to Damien like the unserious

MACEY To say I was excited was an understatement. I felt like I was floating on air, my heart practically doing backflips in my chest. I kept glancing at my phone, waiting for Damien to call and tell me he was on his way. The moment it rang, I nearly dropped it in my excitement. “Hey, Mace,” he said, his voice warm and steady, like an anchor in the middle of my chaos. “I’m in front of your apartment.” I practically launched myself out of my chair and bolted to the door. By the time I reached the curb, there he was, standing next to his car, looking impossibly calm and perfect. He smiled when he saw me, and I swear my heart skipped a beat. “Hey,” he said softly, opening the passenger door for me. “Here, get in. Make yourself comfortable.” I slid into the seat, smoothing the fabric of my dress and stealing glances at him. Damien was already in the driver’s seat, adjusting the rearview mirror, but his eyes kept flicking to me. “You look beautiful,” he murmured without prompting. My

MACEY Evelyn was one of those people who just… made you feel calm. You know the type... soft-spoken but confident, with a smile that felt like sunlight after rain. “Macey Carter,” she said, her tone genuinely welcoming. “I’ve heard some lovely things about your work.” That alone almost made me blush. “Good things, I hope,” I said, laughing nervously. “Only the best,” she replied. “Why don’t you tell me a bit about your design process?” And just like that, it stopped feeling like an interview. We talked about fabrics, inspirations, and how I sometimes got ideas from random street posters or a stranger’s jacket. She laughed and said, “That’s how you know you’re a real designer. You see beauty where others don’t.” When she finally leaned back and said, “You can resume whenever you feel ready. Though if you take my advice, Monday’s a great day for new beginnings,” my heart practically somersaulted. I managed to hold it together. I smiled, thanked her, and shook her hand again, but t

MACEY “I called him yesterday,” I blurted out before I could stop myself. Dr. Hale’s pen froze mid-sentence. She looked up, her brows lifting just slightly. “You called Damien?” I nodded, staring at the beige rug instead of her face. “Yeah. I don’t even know why. It was late, and I was in my feelings, I guess. I just… needed to hear his voice.” She didn’t react right away. That was the thing about Dr. Hale, she didn’t rush you. She let silence do the work. After a moment, she tilted her head, her tone calm but probing. “And how did that make you feel?” I let out a small laugh, the kind that sounds more like an exhale. “Like a cliche.” “Why do you say that?” “Because I keep telling myself I’m moving on,” I said, twisting the silver bracelet around my wrist. “And then I go and do something like that. It’s pathetic.” “It’s human,” she said simply. “Maybe.” I sighed. “He picked up right away, though. Said my name like he’d been waiting for it. That… kind of broke me.” Her gaze s

DAMIEN I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t even bring myself to touch her. Ruby sat beside me on the edge of that cheap bed, the low light painting her skin gold. She smelled like vanilla and whiskey, a combination that should’ve done something for me, but it didn’t. Her fingers traced my arm, light and practiced, her lips curling into a soft smile as she leaned closer. But I felt nothing. Not a spark, not a pull—nothing close to what Macey made me feel with just one glance. I sat there, staring at the wall like a complete idiot, my mind miles away. She said something, something flirtatious and probably rehearsed, but I didn’t even catch it. I was too busy thinking about the way Macey laughed, the way she said my name, and the way she looked at me like she saw through all my bullshit. Ruby tried again, brushing her hand over my chest, and that’s when I stood up. “I can’t,” I said, my voice rougher than I meant it to be. She blinked, confused. “Did I do something wrong?” I shook my

DAMIEN I had barely kicked off my running shoes when I noticed Zinna’s car parked outside my place. My hand froze on the door, and I just stared. Of all the days she could decide to show up unannounced… why today? My chest tightened... not with anger exactly, but with that mix of irritation and curiosity I always felt when it came to her. She probably had that look in her eyes, the one I’d known since she was little, that said she came with fire. I stepped inside, letting the door click softly behind me, and there she was. She was sitting on my couch like she owned the place, legs crossed, arms folded. Patient. Waiting. Always ready to start a war. Sometimes I swear this kid was born ready to take on the world headfirst. “Hey, Zee,” I said, trying to sound casual. I was so tired and just wanted to go upstairs and take a nap. She tilted her head, a smirk tugging at the corners of her lips, and I could practically feel the words coming before she spoke. “Hey, Damien. That’s it?
