Chapter Four
~A PREGNANCY TO KEEP
>Kate's Pov
When I returned Pierre had slid down the floor with one hand clutching his chest and the other bracing him on the floor.
"That is it!" I snapped. "You look deathly pale. We are going to the hospital now." My trembling fingers reached for my phone.
"No!" His voice managed to be steel despite his weakness. "There will be no hospitals Kate, not ever."
"B- but you can barely stand-"
"Please Kate, never take me there, ever. Promise?" His good eye locked onto mine and the emerald green that I recalled so vividly from that night was now dulled with fear.
"I promise," I whispered. I opened the yellow bottle and watched as he swallowed two pills dry. His hands even shook so badly that he nearly dropped them.
"I will be fine after some rest."
“Let me help you to bed.” He hesitated and then nodded. Then, with slow movements, I slipped my arm around his waist.
It was the same waist I had once traced with eager fingers in the dark of his hotel room. I helped him up while he let me guide him.
He leaned heavily against me as we made our way to the bed. Being this close to the fragrance of his skin made my head spin with memories that I could not afford to revisit. I pulled back the covers and helped him ease onto the soft massive mattress.
“Do not-” He began as I placed a pillow behind his head.
“Do not what? Worry? It's too late.” He stared at me for a moment.
"I am sorry," he said and then he closed his eyes. "You do not have to stay."
But I did.
I waited by his side, watching the rise and fall of his chest until his breathing finally evened out and sleep claimed him.
Then, I grabbed my phone and slipped into the hall with my phone already pressed to my ear after punching in a number I had memorized long ago.
The receiver took the call on the second ring. “Kate?”
My throat tightened. “Kalis, I need your help desperately."
"What is happened? I thought this was supposed to be your wedding night? You sound terrified."
"It's my husband. I need you to help him without his knowledge."
"I do not understand you. Make it make sense."
"I would like you to create a chance meeting with him and offer to help him. He will not go to a hospital. And he needs proper treatment or he will die. But before that, I need you to find medical information on him. I will pay you Kalis." The line went quiet for so long that I feared she had hung up.
"Do you realize what you are asking is unethical Kate?"
"I know. But he will die without help and I can not watch that happen."
......
Three days later, I met up with Kalis at a café near the hospital. Her dark curls had been pulled up into a tight bun. She put on her glasses before she placed a file on the table between us.
"This is your husband's file. You don't know what I had to go through to steal this shit." I swallowed hard.
“Thank you Kalis."
"Speak gratitude in money," she grumbled, "and not in words."
"I will. What did you find?” She hesitated then slid the file towards me. “It is worse than you imagined.”
My fingers trembled as I opened it. There were various scans, reports and medical notes. I skimmed through until one phrase caught my attention and made my stomach drop.
“The metal shard lodged in the heart has shifted and the patient needs immediate intervention.”
I looked up at Kalis. “There is a metal shard in his heart?”
“Yes, and it keeps shifting. If it moves further, it could be fatal.”
“What can you do for him?”
“He would need surgery. I can create a chance meeting as you said, make friends and then convince him to let me examine him.” I just knew that there was more.
"But?" I pressed.
“But he has trust issues. I don't think he will agree to any kind of surgery unless he believes that he has no other option.”
“Please make him believe Kalis.”
She sighed. “I can't promise but I will do what I can..”
I nodded. “Please keep him alive.”
.......
That evening when I walked into Pierre’s office, his assistant barely glanced up as I passed. There was tension in the air like something had happened before I arrived.
Pierre was standing near his desk with his jaw was clenched. He glanced at me as I shut the door behind me.
“What is wrong?” I asked as I went up to him. "Is your chest hurting again?" I studied his face. The stress was eating at him. He looked exhausted.
"No," He exhaled sharply. “Someone sent me an email threatening to release company secrets.”
I hesitated before I reached for his arm. “Pierre, you need to rest. Allow your team handle this.”
He tensed at my touch but he did not pull away. “I do not have the time to rest Kate.”
“Then make time.”
His emerald gaze flickered to mine and I remembered his lips on my breasts, his tongue teasing my nipples. I recalled his tongue on my clit, his eyes meeting mine above my core as he ate my cookie.
I should tell him. He deserved to know that I was the red head lady from six months ago.
I took a deep breath as I gathered my courage. “I need to tell you something about us Pierre.” He looked at me. "It is about-"
I heard the sounds of argument outside before the door to the office burst open.
Then Ella was standing there.
She stormed in with her heels clicking against the floor. She was holding a white envelope.
She palmed it onto Pierre's chest with a smirk. “You wanted proof.”
"Proof of?" Pierre asked as I took the envelope from between Ella's hands and Pierre's chest and opened it.
Inside it was a pregnancy result. It stated that Ella was pregnant. It dated five weeks back.
I shrugged. Anyone can make that. But then, I saw the pictures attached to it, pictures taken exactly five weeks back of Ella and Pierre in bed.
I felt the blood drain from my face.
"Is this true?" I asked as I raised the pictures for Pierre to see.
Ella crossed her arms triumphantly across her chest. “I am pregnant with your child, Pierre. And now, you can not deny it.”
.Her Lies, My WarElla’s Private LoungeElla sat by a vintage phonograph, playing a soft French song as she swirled wine in her glass. Her phone buzzed.Agent: “Phase One complete. Kate’s OB records were flagged by the health department. It will appear like insurance fraud.”“Perfect,” she whispered.“She’ll be under review within forty-eight hours.”Ella smiled at her reflection. “And when Pierre is forced to choose between his company and a ‘lying’ wife?”She lifted her glass.“He’ll bury her.”Kate’s POVThe moment I left Pierre’s office, the air outside felt suffocating. Even the corridor seemed to hum with silent judgment. Every glance from passing staff held a question. Suspicion. Whispers I couldn’t hear, but I felt them sinking into my skin like glass shards.Ella’s game had begun. And now, she was targeting more than Pierre’s empire, she was going after my child.I walked briskly toward the executive elevator, resisting the overwhelming urge to call someone, anyone, to scream
. The Masked BetrayalMeanwhile, at Ella’s SuiteElla’s POVElla stood by the window, watching the raindrops dance across the glass. Her phone buzzed.“Is it done?” she asked, not bothering with pleasantries, this was a mission, and she sure is making every move to make it work.A distorted voice answered, “The DNA records will be altered by tomorrow. Her medical file is being tampered with as we speak.”“Good. We’ll make sure there’s no baby by the time she’s due.”She hung up and turned to her mirror, practicing the smile she’d wear for the press conference with Pierre.“You’re not ready for war, Kate,” she whispered to her reflection.“But I was born for it.” She added, letting her lips smirk, Starring at herself as she did so.Pierre’s POVThere was a time I could command a room with a single glance. Not anymore. Not when one eye saw darkness. Not when my heart sputtered like a faulty machine. Not when my empire was bleeding through an invisible wound, and I couldn’t find the blad
. A Womb Full of SecretsKate’s POVI ran, not looking back to see his face a second time, not in the literal sense—my body was already too fragile, too wary of what lived inside me, but emotionally, I was a storm pulling away from land, trying not to flood the coast I loved, and the only thing my brain could think of was running.Pierre had looked at me like I was someone else.Like I was her again. The redhead he had dreamt about. The woman he thought he lost, but he hadn’t just lost me, he had shredded me with months of indifference, suspicion, and silence. Now he wanted to look at me with softness in his eyes, now that he knew, but there was just something different about It.The hallway felt longer than usual as I walked to my suite. I kept my eyes forward, ignoring the way my vision blurred with tears. My hand instinctively dropped to my belly, still flat, still betraying no secrets, but alive.A child. His child. Our child.I reached my room and closed the door, letting my back
. The Red Thread of TruthPierre’s POVThe silence was loud. She was her.The redhead. The only woman I had let into my private hell. And now she was my wife?I gripped the edge of the desk, barely hearing the city hum beyond the glass behind me. Kate’s voice still rang in my ears like a ghost echoing through an abandoned cathedral. It was clear and I could read the room too….“I knew you six months ago…”The pieces clattered into place like dominoes in my head, her scent, her voice, the way her fingers had trembled that night. All of it had felt like a dream wrapped in midnight. Wishing i could wake up, but this was reality. And now it stood before me, in the form of a woman I had coldly married for convenience. My chest tightened, from the unbearable realization that I had been cruel to the one person who had stayed.“You’re lying.”The words came out of me like a shield. A last attempt to reject the fire about to swallow me whole. Her jaw tightened. “I’m not.”“Then why didn’t you
- Lies, Leaks, and Laced TruthsKate’s POVThe photo of Ella and Pierre lay on the coffee table like a cursed relic, mocking, daring me to believe it. I had stared at it for hours, flipping it over, zooming in, squinting, even sniffing it as if it might somehow confess its lie out loud. But it didn’t. And the longer I looked at it, the more my resolve chipped away. I had tried to tell him. About the night. About me. But Ella had snuck in like poison just before I could. Now? I didn’t even know if the truth would matter anymore. It hurts to even think about it again, so I’ll just let it be.I closed the folder containing Kalis’s medical reports and shoved it back beneath the floorboard where I had hidden it. Pierre’s life was still at stake, Ella’s deception or not.He needed me. Only I could save him. And God help me, despite the betrayal, I still wanted him, so much.My phone buzzed violently on the vanity. I grabbed it. It’s Kalis.Kalis: “Kate, it’s happening. I ran into Pierre at t
Chapter Five~The Broken King>Pierre's Pov The city lights came in through the French windows, upsetting my bad eye with each pulse of color. It was a reminder of what I have become and what might become of the empire I was struggling to hold together. My fingers traced the scar that ran over my blind eye, feeling its raised edges beneath my fingers. The gesture had become a habit and it betrayed the weakness I fought so hard to hide."You had looked so pathetic in that meeting, Pierre," my father's words from this morning cut through my thoughts. "Do you think that anyone could respect a leader who shows his weakness in public?"Weakness? I laughed mirthlessly at the word. The sound died in my throat as I wondered what kind of leader could not even trust his own heart to keep beating? It was all because my heart had failed in the board meeting and I had to clutch my chest, gasping for breath with everyone watching. The intercom rang and I walked to the desk and reached for it. "
