Chapter 1 Not the Same Person

Author: Julian Cross
I led Team Alpha into a Rank S high-infection zone, fought deadly battles, and finally grasped the original serum antibodies in an abandoned underground military lab. That was humanity's hope. I held off the horde just to cover for my team's retreat.

I carved a bloody path despite facing tens of thousands of zombies and dragged my wounded self to the armored vehicle. I initially thought my teammates would welcome me, and my wife would hug me, but instead, the vehicle's door was firmly locked.

Roars belonging to high-tier zombies came from every direction. Overhead, micro drones trained their cams on me, showing the camp's survivors how wounded and in despair I was.

Wade Carter, Jasmine Cole's male best friend, was a useless bum who couldn't muster the guts to kill even a single, regular zombie even though it'd been three years since the apocalypse.

However, he was now ordering me around like he was a king. I heard his voice coming from the military-grade walkie-talkie as he arrogantly said, "Don't just stand there, Jason! You heard Jasmine! Move it! Run right to the eastern ruins and distract the Tier Six zombies!

"You'll never hear the end of it if they scratch the vehicle's bulletproof glass and get in my way of going to the inner city!"

The b*stards were yelling at me from the safety of the vehicle. The zombie virus was quickly spreading through my calf, numbing my body. I clenched my hand around my blade, veins throbbing.

This was where the original Jason got ripped apart by the incoming horde, meeting his demise thanks to treachery.

I was not that cannon fodder. Instead, I was a pro esports player who was used to high-stress situations, and turning the tables in seemingly impossible situations was my thing.

A group of hulking, strength-type zombies was charging straight at me from fifty yards away. I could hear their roars. Every step they took would shake the road. Behind them, countless infected followed.

Jasmine and Wade were still laughing from within the vehicle. I calmly raised my left hand and clicked two buttons hidden on the side of my tactical helmet.

"Video recording synced."

Faced with overwhelming evidence and the fury of over a hundred thousand survivors, the camp commander finally broke. Cornered, he yanked his pistol from his belt and tried to take me hostage. "Don't come any closer! I'm the highest-ranking commander in the safe zone!" "You're nothing." I didn't even bother drawing my blade. Tier Seven power surged through me as I lifted one hand and clenched it in the air. With a boom, the camp commander dropped where he stood as blood sprayed everywhere. Above us, ten heavy transport aircraft cargo bays opened at once.Hundreds of fully armed Central Command special forces soldiers descended, landing in tight formation with precise coordination. In moments, they disarmed the camp commander's loyalists and subdued every corrupt senior official. "The ringleader is dead! Everyone, stay where you are!" the special ops captain shouted, his voice echoing through the chaos and stopping everyone in the plaza. I turned to look down at Jasmine and

The moment Jasmine saw my face clearly, she let out a shriek so sharp and terrified it was as if she had seen a ghost. Her entire body convulsed violently. Her remaining eye bulged, as though it might burst from its socket. Flailing in panic, she tumbled out of her motorized wheelchair, hit the platform hard, and scrambled backward. "No… that's impossible!" Jasmine screamed as her veil slipped away, revealing the ruined half of her face. "You were supposed to be dead! How are you still alive? I saw the horde swallow you!" Wade looked just as shattered. He staggered back several steps, lost his balance, and crashed to the ground. Then, a foul, yellow stain spread rapidly down his pant leg. The camp commander turned deathly pale as his body quivered uncontrollably. Realizing disaster had arrived, he shouted in a stammering panic, "Guards! Guards! Arrest this traitor!" "I'd like to see any of you try." I ignored their terror and unleashed the full force of my Tier Seven abil

Three days later, the largest central plaza in the safe zone was packed to the brim. Black-and-white banners hung all over the square, each one shouting the same message in bold block letters: "Punish the traitor Jason Kane. Honor the hero Wade Carter." Dozens of micro-drones hovered overhead, broadcasting the event live from every angle across the entire zone. The atmosphere had been whipped into a fever pitch. Jasmine wore a dark veil over the damaged side of her face, hiding the grotesque scars beneath. Even through the thin fabric, the wound looked raw and inflamed. Seated in an incredibly luxurious motorized wheelchair, she gently wiped her eye with a handkerchief and tearfully spoke to the drone cameras. "Jason may have betrayed humanity and almost caused our demise, but he was still my husband once. I am now a disabled woman… but I will endure. I will use the resources he left behind to support the camp." That performance—so calculated, so painfully self-righteous—

Since the military possessed the best pre-apocalypse medical resources, and I recovered remarkably quickly, my injuries healed against all odds. Additionally, after nearly dying, my abilities advanced significantly. I had broken through to Tier Seven, powerful enough to face a Zombie King alone. My eyes flew open. The hatch slid apart, and standing outside was the military's highest commander in person: an old general with a golden star on his shoulder. "How are you feeling, Major General Kane?" he asked, gazing at me with genuine admiration and excitement. "Major General?" I echoed, caught off guard. "The original serum antibodies you brought back allowed the research division to achieve a breakthrough overnight. They're now moving ahead with large-scale vaccine production." The old general held my hand firmly, his voice quivering slightly. "This is a significant achievement for the world, son. The Military Commission made an exception and promoted you to major general

Two weeks later. Inside the high-security intensive care suite within the safe zone's inner city, a carefully staged holographic interview was happening. Jasmine lay in a hospital bed, the entire left side of her face wrapped in thick bandages. Only one eye was visible, and it burned with venom. Propped weakly against her pillow, she forced out a few tears for the camera. Wade sat nearby in a wheelchair, dressed in a patient gown with an empty right sleeve. His face was pale, but he worked hard to maintain the grim, stoic expression of a 'disabled hero.' "Ms. Cole, tell us—what exactly happened in the high-infection zone? Why did Captain Kane suddenly detonate a concussion grenade?" A reporter in the camp commander's pocket asked the question, delivering the question loudly and exactly as scripted. The instant Jasmine heard my name, she began to shake. A raw, piercing sob tore from her throat, as if she were reliving unspeakable terror and humiliation. "It was Jason... he w

The armored vehicle was drowned out by tens of thousands of zombies. The monsters were squeezing and crashing against the defensive layers. The concussion grenade incessantly let off maddening noises, causing the zombies to be in a constant state of frenzy. The safe and wide space in the vehicle was now hell on earth. Jasmine covered her ears. She shouted hysterically, her body tumbling alongside the violently shaking vehicle, "Jason, you absolute b*stard! Turn this bloody thing off!"Her exquisite makeup was ruined and twisted by sweat and fear.Wade was shivering in a corner, shrinking as much as he could. He couldn't even hold his gun right as he mumbled fearfully, "What do we do? We're dead. We're so dead! The glass won't hold much longer!"Wade's fear came true. A chilling crack thundered overhead. The bulletproof glass, touted to block off even a machine-gun assault, was finally showing cracks from the strength-type zombies' unrelenting attacks."No! Don't come in!" Jasmin
