Chapter 3

ผู้เขียน: Orange X
I dragged my heavy body out of the room to look for medicine. I tried to open my mouth and could barely make a sound.

Leon came down soon after. Seeing the medicine in my hand, he asked what was wrong.

"Nothing." My voice was so hoarse it sounded foreign to me.

Leon came over and felt my forehead. "You're burning up! Did you catch a cold? I'll take you to the hospital."

"No need. I'll just rest a bit."

"Are you still angry? I'm sorry. That day... I forgot."

He pulled an exquisite velvet box from his pocket. Inside lay a diamond necklace.

"A gift to make it up to you."

The diamond was red as blood, throwing off dazzling, many-colored light under the lamp.

But the one who loved red was Cecilia.

"Let me take you to the doctor. There's a banquet tomorrow night, and you have to be there."

I didn't take it. I wanted to go back to sleep, when suddenly a cry came from upstairs. Cecilia had collapsed against the staircase, clutching her stomach, her face pale.

"Leon, my stomach hurts so much. Please... take me to the hospital."

At that, Leon shoved the box into my hands and rushed over, gingerly lifting Cecilia into his arms.

Her face was ghostly white, her brow knotted tight. Leon tossed out a single "Remember to see a doctor" and left without a backward glance.

I stood in the empty room and only felt colder. He'd cast me aside again.

The next day, Leon held a dinner at the estate.

Ostensibly it was to welcome Cecilia back, but in truth every important figure in Chicago's underworld had come.

Crimson Flame's capos, the advisors of allied families, even a few old men who never usually showed their faces, all sat around the long table draped in Venetian lace.

The dinner had barely begun when Cecilia came over with a wineglass in hand, circled to Leon's right, and pulled out the chair to sit down without the slightest hesitation. That was the Donna's seat.

Leon let it happen.

The two of them murmured together the whole time, exchanging smiles now and then, as if they were the true host and hostess of the evening.

I watched it all with a blank face, and Leon didn't spare me so much as a glance. My chest felt tight. I stood to leave, but Cecilia stopped me.

"Where are you off to, Emilia? I still have something to announce. Aren't you curious?"

I hadn't meant to pay her any mind, but Cecilia raised her arm, and the scar running across the inside of it showed pale white under the light.

"Leon, do you remember? When you were little, the Iron Fist family kidnapped you, and a little girl saved you. I came across your old file the other day and only then found out about it. Back then, I was locked in the cell next to yours, and I sang you Italian nursery rhymes all night long."

The dinner knife in Leon's hand clattered onto the table. "What did you say?"

"You don't remember?"

Cecilia produced a silver coin and gave it a little shake under the light.

"This coin, I gave you one just like it back then. Don't tell me you've thrown it away."

Leon hurriedly pulled a coin from his inside pocket and compared them. Identical.

I froze, then realized she must have taken it from my room that day.

I lifted my head to explain, only to meet Leon's eyes, and in them a tangle of shock, anger, and disbelief.

He shot me one look, then turned and pulled Cecilia into his arms.

"I've finally found you, my little princess."

The people at the table chimed in with cheers, and a few of Leon's men whistled.

Those men had once been close to me, and now they were falling over themselves to flatter Cecilia. They laughed and talked, clinked glasses, passed cigars around. Only I stayed sitting in my chair, the scar in that very same spot on my arm seeming to ache faintly.

Then Cecilia handed Leon a business card.

"Darling, on this trip to Scandinavia I met the head of the Moretti family's trade council. If you want to expand over there, you could try reaching out."

That pleased Leon even more, and the two of them drank a toast.

It was only a contact, Leon. What I'd secured was a full trade license for the entire region.

As the dinner broke up, Leon passed by me and said coldly, "You liar."

Cecilia sauntered over, smug, an almost pitying smile in her eyes.

"Emilia, you can't win against me. You think he loves you? All he loves is power. Now your man is mine, and the credit for saving him is mine, too."

"You bought off that guard from back then, didn't you," I said. "And cut yourself open too, all for this?"

Cecilia let out a scoff.

"Oh, it's more than that. I've got another gift for you. Just wait a little longer, Leon will come looking for you soon."

She turned and walked off, her heels striking the marble floor one beat after another, like nails being driven in.

My phone buzzed.

It really was a message from Leon: Come to the study. There's something I need to tell with you.

I crouched down in front of him, watching him coldly."Look at you, Leon. You broke two women's hearts just like that. Don't you feel even a shred of guilt?""I'm sorry, Emilia. Cecilia's already been punished. From now on I swear I'll treat you right."I turned the ring on my finger. "It's because I'm the heir of the Moretti family that you're willing to come begging, isn't it? If I really were a bastard with nothing to my name, would you still choose me?""I would, Emilia. No matter who you are, it's you I love!""Hahaha, Leon, you think I'd still believe you? Stop lying to yourself. There's no one in your heart but you, always choosing whatever suits you best. Cecilia was in the wrong, sure, but you're the one truly to blame!"I stood up, took one last look at this place that had once held so many beautiful memories, then turned and walked toward the sunlight."The one you owe an apology to is that little girl who picked a lock to save you and was left with a scar that never faded.

After that I was worn out with businesses and heard nothing more of Leon or Cecilia. I couldn't be bothered to care either. I still had plenty to deal with in North America. One day I arrived at a spot I'd arranged in advance with an allied crew to talk business, but when the time came, they still hadn't shown.I sensed something was wrong and quickly left with my men.Sure enough, before we could even reach the door, masked killers poured in around the warehouse and came straight for us.This was probably the work of my dear sister or my father again.I shrugged off my coat, tied up my hair, and took the gun one of my men handed me.Too bad for them. These three years, I'd learned a great deal too.Gunfire erupted on all sides and dust flew. I took several wounds, but thankfully the reinforcements Mama had sent arrived and rounded every last one of them up.As we were interrogating them on the spot, Leon actually showed up with his own men."Emilia, are you all right?" When he saw my

"This is a traitor I rooted out not long ago. For three years, without my permission, he lent out the Moretti family's trade routes to several North American mafia families and made a tidy pile of dirty money.""Today I'll deal with him in front of all of you, as a warning to everyone here."I drew my gun and put a bullet through his forehead, the shot ringing out through the hall. Blood spread red across the floor, and I didn't so much as blink."I hope we can work together on good terms from now on. And I hope none of you will lay a hand on what doesn't belong to you."Leon shot to his feet, his voice forced out through his teeth. "Emilia. Three years...""Sign," I said, pushing the document back in front of him. "I have other matters once this deal is done."He gripped the pen, his knuckles white, and in the end he signed.I put the document away and turned to leave. Behind me came Cecilia's frenzied screaming and Leon's furious roar. "Somebody, drag her out!"As I stepped through t

A day later, Leon found a charred wedding ring in the ruins of the tower. He knelt in the middle of the ashes, covered in dust, his fingers cut and bleeding from the rubble, and still he dug with his hands. His deputy crouched beside him, trying to pull him up. "Don, my condolences. She's gone... the fire was too much. There's nothing left."Leon didn't move. He knelt there, the wedding ring clenched in his palm, gripping it until his knuckles cracked. After a long while, he spoke. "Before she left, did she say anything?"His deputy shook his head. "The guards say she didn't say a word."When Leon got to his feet, he swayed and nearly fell, then staggered down out of the ruins.Sicily. The headquarters of the Moretti family. My heart pounded like a drum as I reached out and pushed open the heavy doors. A woman, somewhat aged yet still beautiful, sat before an enormous floor-to-ceiling window."Mama..."Isabella turned, and when she saw me, tears welled in her eyes.I ran to her and we

Leon had me under house arrest. He was probably afraid I'd run.He worried that I would flee with key information So the estate was ringed with guards, working shifts around the clock. He said I wasn't to set one foot outside until I'd signed the papers.I packed up in my room. Three years, and there wasn't much I wanted to take with me.Cecilia turned up again and cornered me in the closet. She wore a silk robe. Her belly didn't show yet, but her hand already rested habitually on it, and at the corner of her mouth hung that smile I'd loathed to my bones since childhood."Emilia," she said, "have you signed the papers yet?""Soon.""Then hurry up and sign."She stepped in and kicked over the suitcase I'd just finished packing. "There's no point in you clinging to this spot. Leon's heart isn't with you. I told you long ago, you can't win against me.""Cecilia." I rose to my feet and walked toward her, step by step. Her smile stiffened, and she backed away a few paces."You know what? Th

I went to the study. He stood at the window with his back to me, an unlit cigar held between his fingers."Emilia," he said, his voice flat, "last October, a shipment of mine got intercepted in Detroit. I chased it for three weeks and only ever traced it back to a leak from the inside.""This January, a deal I had with the East Coast got snatched out from under me three days early. It was like they'd walked in holding my cards, undercutting me by exactly ten percent."He turned, spun the papers on the desk around, and pushed them toward me. There were email screenshots, transfer records, and a chat log from a messaging app. The avatars of both parties had been blacked out, but the sender's IP address was circled.I took one look. It was the fixed IP of my own laptop."This is—""And the eighteenth, our anniversary! My warehouse in Miami got raided. The federal agents showed up at exactly the right moment, like they'd timed it to the second."Anger simmered in Leon's eyes, on the verge
