Chapter 2

Author: Orange X
I opened the door to find my things dumped downstairs in a chaotic heap, while Cecilia lounged on the couch, leisurely sipping red wine.

"My dear Emilia, you're finally back. Your room is mine now, by the way."

"Where's Leon?" I asked through clenched teeth.

"Out on business. No point looking for him. Leon agreed to this, you know."

"You're getting more shameless by the day, Cecilia. Can't even wait to move right in?"

"Hit a nerve? Go on then, run and tattle. You really think Leon would take your side?"

I clenched my fists and held myself back. I gathered up my scattered things, then went to the guest room, slammed the door, and left myself a little peace.

That night a sudden ache all over my body jolted me awake. I sat up, my throat killing me too. It seemed I'd caught a cold.

I got up to take some medicine, and I'd only just reached the hallway when I heard the soft, suggestive sound of panting.

Even in the dim light, I could see Cecilia and Leon wrapped around each other on the couch, kissing hungrily.

They kissed like they couldn't bear to part, not even noticing my eyes on them.

Leon was back. He hadn't asked how my night had been, hadn't remembered our anniversary. He'd gone straight to Cecilia's arms.

I turned to go back to my room, telling myself I could just endure one night, but I accidentally knocked into a coat rack.

"Emilia?" Leon quickly pushed Cecilia away, switched on the light, and came over.

"Where did you go last night? My men couldn't reach you anywhere."

His lips were red and swollen, and there was a faint lipstick stain on his neck. One glance was enough to turn my stomach.

"None of your business."

I tried to leave, but Leon grabbed my wrist tight. "What are you making a scene for? It's not what it looked like…"

"Enough, Leon. Do whatever you want, the two of you. I'm the one intruding here."

I ran back to my room and locked the door, ignoring Leon's knocking no matter how hard he pounded, and buried myself under the covers.

I dreamed of the year I turned eighteen, the first time I ever met Leon.

Back then I'd found him in the alley behind a bar, covered in blood. Enemies had been hunting him down, and a long gash had been cut open from his chest all the way to his stomach.

With a needle and fishing line I'd scrounged from the back kitchen, I stitched the wound closed, stitch by stitch. There was no anesthetic, and he gritted through it by sheer will.

His eyes back then were like a beast lying in wait, full of ambition and defiance, and they burned into me until something in my chest trembled.

Not long after, word reached me in our circles about Leon Castellano, the most powerful capo of Chicago's Crimson Flame family, the man who had wiped out the Iron Fist family.

I still remember the evening Leon came to find me. The sunset was beautiful. He held out a bunch of flowers, smiling, and asked if he could court me.

We got through the hardest years together. I did everything I could to win him whatever he wanted, even though I had few connections of my own to call on within the family.

Until, in a power struggle, he killed the muddled, useless boss and took his place, building Crimson Flame into the most powerful mafia family in Chicago. And so, as naturally as anything, we married.

On our wedding night, tangled together, Leon noticed the old scar on my arm. His pupils tightened, and he asked how I'd gotten it.

I told him I'd been kidnapped once as a child, and I'd gotten this scar saving a little boy.

Shock filled Leon's face. "Did you also sing nursery rhymes all night long to comfort that little boy?"

"How do you know that?"

Leon leaned down and kissed me, his eyes softening even more.

"That little boy was me."

"And what if the one who saved you back then hadn't been me?"

"There's no what-if. Because it was you. It could only ever be you."

I marveled that maybe this was what fate had arranged, and I spent the sweetest, happiest days of my life with him.

And all of it ceased to exist once my half-sister Cecilia came back to the country.

Only then did I learn that she'd met Leon before I ever had, that they'd risked their lives together on deal after deal and pledged themselves to each other long ago. If Cecilia hadn't been sent abroad by our father for four years over a single mistake, it would have been the two of them walking down the aisle.

When Cecilia came back, her eyes went red with hatred. She blamed me for stealing her man and swore she'd take everything of mine away.

And Cecilia truly did it. She engineered chance encounters by every means she could, offered help through the family's connections, and with her status as the legitimate daughter on top of it all, little by little the old flame between them rekindled, and Leon grew colder and colder toward me.

Only then did I understand that what mattered most to Leon was self-interest. Between a "little girl" who'd become nothing but a dusty memory and the heir to the Rosse family, he would surely choose the heir.

I woke from the dream, my eyes sore, a large patch of my pillow soaked through.

I took the trade license out of my pocket and tore it to shreds, along with my own heart.

I crouched down in front of him, watching him coldly."Look at you, Leon. You broke two women's hearts just like that. Don't you feel even a shred of guilt?""I'm sorry, Emilia. Cecilia's already been punished. From now on I swear I'll treat you right."I turned the ring on my finger. "It's because I'm the heir of the Moretti family that you're willing to come begging, isn't it? If I really were a bastard with nothing to my name, would you still choose me?""I would, Emilia. No matter who you are, it's you I love!""Hahaha, Leon, you think I'd still believe you? Stop lying to yourself. There's no one in your heart but you, always choosing whatever suits you best. Cecilia was in the wrong, sure, but you're the one truly to blame!"I stood up, took one last look at this place that had once held so many beautiful memories, then turned and walked toward the sunlight."The one you owe an apology to is that little girl who picked a lock to save you and was left with a scar that never faded.

After that I was worn out with businesses and heard nothing more of Leon or Cecilia. I couldn't be bothered to care either. I still had plenty to deal with in North America. One day I arrived at a spot I'd arranged in advance with an allied crew to talk business, but when the time came, they still hadn't shown.I sensed something was wrong and quickly left with my men.Sure enough, before we could even reach the door, masked killers poured in around the warehouse and came straight for us.This was probably the work of my dear sister or my father again.I shrugged off my coat, tied up my hair, and took the gun one of my men handed me.Too bad for them. These three years, I'd learned a great deal too.Gunfire erupted on all sides and dust flew. I took several wounds, but thankfully the reinforcements Mama had sent arrived and rounded every last one of them up.As we were interrogating them on the spot, Leon actually showed up with his own men."Emilia, are you all right?" When he saw my

"This is a traitor I rooted out not long ago. For three years, without my permission, he lent out the Moretti family's trade routes to several North American mafia families and made a tidy pile of dirty money.""Today I'll deal with him in front of all of you, as a warning to everyone here."I drew my gun and put a bullet through his forehead, the shot ringing out through the hall. Blood spread red across the floor, and I didn't so much as blink."I hope we can work together on good terms from now on. And I hope none of you will lay a hand on what doesn't belong to you."Leon shot to his feet, his voice forced out through his teeth. "Emilia. Three years...""Sign," I said, pushing the document back in front of him. "I have other matters once this deal is done."He gripped the pen, his knuckles white, and in the end he signed.I put the document away and turned to leave. Behind me came Cecilia's frenzied screaming and Leon's furious roar. "Somebody, drag her out!"As I stepped through t

A day later, Leon found a charred wedding ring in the ruins of the tower. He knelt in the middle of the ashes, covered in dust, his fingers cut and bleeding from the rubble, and still he dug with his hands. His deputy crouched beside him, trying to pull him up. "Don, my condolences. She's gone... the fire was too much. There's nothing left."Leon didn't move. He knelt there, the wedding ring clenched in his palm, gripping it until his knuckles cracked. After a long while, he spoke. "Before she left, did she say anything?"His deputy shook his head. "The guards say she didn't say a word."When Leon got to his feet, he swayed and nearly fell, then staggered down out of the ruins.Sicily. The headquarters of the Moretti family. My heart pounded like a drum as I reached out and pushed open the heavy doors. A woman, somewhat aged yet still beautiful, sat before an enormous floor-to-ceiling window."Mama..."Isabella turned, and when she saw me, tears welled in her eyes.I ran to her and we

Leon had me under house arrest. He was probably afraid I'd run.He worried that I would flee with key information So the estate was ringed with guards, working shifts around the clock. He said I wasn't to set one foot outside until I'd signed the papers.I packed up in my room. Three years, and there wasn't much I wanted to take with me.Cecilia turned up again and cornered me in the closet. She wore a silk robe. Her belly didn't show yet, but her hand already rested habitually on it, and at the corner of her mouth hung that smile I'd loathed to my bones since childhood."Emilia," she said, "have you signed the papers yet?""Soon.""Then hurry up and sign."She stepped in and kicked over the suitcase I'd just finished packing. "There's no point in you clinging to this spot. Leon's heart isn't with you. I told you long ago, you can't win against me.""Cecilia." I rose to my feet and walked toward her, step by step. Her smile stiffened, and she backed away a few paces."You know what? Th

I went to the study. He stood at the window with his back to me, an unlit cigar held between his fingers."Emilia," he said, his voice flat, "last October, a shipment of mine got intercepted in Detroit. I chased it for three weeks and only ever traced it back to a leak from the inside.""This January, a deal I had with the East Coast got snatched out from under me three days early. It was like they'd walked in holding my cards, undercutting me by exactly ten percent."He turned, spun the papers on the desk around, and pushed them toward me. There were email screenshots, transfer records, and a chat log from a messaging app. The avatars of both parties had been blacked out, but the sender's IP address was circled.I took one look. It was the fixed IP of my own laptop."This is—""And the eighteenth, our anniversary! My warehouse in Miami got raided. The federal agents showed up at exactly the right moment, like they'd timed it to the second."Anger simmered in Leon's eyes, on the verge
