Easing the car into the garage without killing the headlights, Antonio got off and went straight upstairs, to his room. Grinch followed almost immediately, and right there in the proximity of his bed he caught him hunched. Elbows on knees, face in his hands, breath hitching like something broken and fighting not to show it. โPalookaโ Grinch finally spoke. Low. โYou don't have to do this.โ He nodded once, but his hands trembledโnot enough to show, but enough that Grinch noticed. Grinch clicked the door shut like a verdict, and walked over to Antonio. โThis is all new for meโ Antonio rasped, voice rough, stripped raw. โIโve never knelt or asked for mercy in all my years of service.โ โThatโs the power of love.โ Grinch replied, his hand landing heavily on Antonioโs shoulder. โleast you bleed weakness onto Don's floorโ โBut sheโs not my weakness.โ he looked up, eyes a complete wreckage. โI just can't let her die because of me.โ โUnfortunately my friend, she already is.โ Antonio shook his head once, shoulders curved inward in humiliation. โI messed up big time. Imagine slacking off for some frolic and nowโ. Fuck.โ โThatโs how men die,โ Grinch brittles. Unmoved. โYou saw more than frolic and mind you, Donโs withdrawal isn't forgiveness. Or protection.โ Antonio stayed silent but his breath fractured. โYou will choose,โ Grinch continued, voice low and venomous, โIf you love her as you claim. Then, severing permanently is the best decisionโ โGrinch?โ โThat's the priceโ the consigliere burrowed. โnot just Don, others are coming and they will use that weakness against youโ He dug into Antonio's pocket and brought out his phone, dialing Nevena's number. โIt's ringingโ โDonโtโโ his head snapped up fully, unwillingness naked on his face. โNot now.โ Grinch covered the mouthpiece of the connected transmission. โShe already pickedโ With a sniffle Antonio stretched and collected the phone. โHelloโ Grinch didn't linger, he padded away from the room, giving him the privacy he needed. โYou scared me,โ Nevena whispered from the speaker. โSomething came upโ โDid you catch a cold?โ she asked, picking up the crackle in his voice. Antonio swallowed it off. โHave you had dinner yet?โ โNo. I'm waiting for youโ โDon't do that anymore,โ he replied flatly. โCook only for you from tonight henceforth.โ โMr. Hunt!โ Nevena sucked in disbelief. โDid I do something wrong?โ โBe it day or night, don't expect me. Never leave your door open at midnight or step out to meet me in the carโ he rasped. โAre you breaking up because of that?โ her voice broke. โI didn't mean to meddle โโ Antonio hung the call, unable to bear her stuttering constrictions. She called back severally but he hung each ring. When the constant rings became haunting he blacklisted her number and cast away his phone. ----- In the kitchen, Nevena stared at the phone that had refused to connect to Antonio's line. She hugged her knee, unable to believe that it was a breakup, he was too real to be a faux. From Arizona down to here, he always showed up. She looked at the laid dishes and decided to try one more time. She redialed him all to no avail. Not wasting a beat, she left everything and retired to bed. ----- <๐๐ฎ๐ง๐ญ ๐๐๐ง๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง.> โฆ๐๐จ๐ซ๐ง๐ข๐ง๐ โฆ โWhat's my schedule like?โ Antonio growled, descending into the living room. Grinch looked up from the table and grinned. He looked immaculate and rejuvenated in his black suit. โDon't worry about a thingโ just restโ โWhy would I need rest?โ Antonio's eyes blew wide. โIโm not sick.โ โIf you insistโ he passed the note tab to him and he scanned. โSo many unattended sites,โ he rumbled. โLet's start with the Casino first.โ Grinch nodded and packed their briefcase. They rushed through breakfast with Antonio barely eating a thing. On their way out he paused and turned to Grinch. โCall up your agent and arrange two bearcats.โ โYou sure about that?โ โI want em thick and curvyโ he continued, ignoring the certainty โPolish Dames, if possible.โ Grinch didn't utter any contraction, the character he was seeing was a whole new opposite from the one who sobbed all-night. Immediately they settled into the car, he dialed his agent and placed the demand. โDoneโ he whispered, removing the phone from his ear. โThey would be here before eveningโ Antonio just nodded, his gaze fixed primarily outside. ------ <๐๐จ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ข๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐๐ซ ๐๐ฎ๐๐ซ๐ญ๐๐ซ> Breanna stood at the intake counter, her jacket dusted in ash. โWeโre filing for an arrest warrant,โ she said, dropping a thick folder on the counter. The desk sergeant glanced at the folder, then at the name on the cover. Antonio Hunt. He blinked once and leaned back in his chair. โYouโre out of your depth,โ he said without preamble Breanna leaned in, forearms on the desk. โYes. I know.โ โYouโll need clearance and a judge willing to die politically.โ She didnโt blink. โSlot me in for a signature.โ The man exhaled profoundly and then reached for the phone. She and Sophia waited until he completed his call. โDetective Stewart โฆ Hunt name doesnโt come through intake.โ the sergeant murmured carefully. โI will have to redirect you to Internal Crimes Divisionโ โGod damnitโ Breanna cussed, jaw clenched. โSo much bureaucracy for just one man's arrest.โ โLet's goโ Sophia coaxed, clamping the folder tight under her arm. โWe will surely secure the warrant.โ ------ โโ ๐๐๐ง๐๐๐ฅ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐๐๐ฌ๐ข๐ง๐จโโ โFuck!โ Antonio cussed, one hand braced on his work table, the other rubbing the tension at the back of neck. He picked up his phone and smooched his lip. โWhat have you done to me?โ He slid into his blacklist and redeemed her number. >โLet's meet upโ don't say no.โ He typed. Before he could thumb the send arrow Grinch pushed open the door and walked in. โSorry for interruption,โ he harnessed, gliding toward him. โThis document needs your urgent approval.โ โOkayโ Antonio laid the phone down, flipping pages of the document that was slid forward. โAny outstanding debt?โ โShit. I forgot to correspond with their terminalโ give me some minutes.โ Antonio stood abruptly. โI also need a moment to keep my bladder alive.โ Grinch nodded watching him depart into the bathroom. Immediately the door clicked, his eyes drifted to the phone still glowing on the desk. He smiled thinly. โPathetic asshole,โ he murmured.๐๐๐๐ข๐โ๐ฌ ๐๐๐ฆ๐๐ฌ๐ข๐ฌยฐยฐยฐThe holding room was grey and quiet. Breanna sat with her hands folded. Back straight. Eyes on the door. She found it hard to sleep or eat. She had always been the one to lock people here, but now this feeling of being locked was overwhelming. The waiting. The weight. She thought of who to reach out to, but none. The panel was obviously trying to bury her, so it was pointless. The door opened, and a guard stepped in. "Ma'am. You have a visitor."Breanna didn't move. She still wedged her tough personality. "Who?"The guard didn't answer. He just stepped aside. And in walked a woman Breanna didn't recognize. Sharp suit. Carrying a leather folder. No smile."Detective Stewart," the woman said. "My name is Elena Vargas. I'm here to escort you out."Breanna's heart stopped. "Is the hearing scheduled today?""Your hearing has been adjourned indefinitely. All charges pending review." Elena opened the folder, showed her the stamp. "You're free to go."Breanna d

Sophia waited. Then she pulled Nevena close to her chest and consoled her. They just stayed there while the morning light crawled across the floor."I won't scold ever again. Okay?"Nevena swallowed. Tried to speak. Nothing came out. Sophia didn't push. Finally, her voice emergedโcracked, raw. "It's not that. We went to Antonio."Sophia went still. "Antonio? That's reckless.""Junior took me. He spoke some language I didn't understand and paid the driver with words." Nevena laughed onceโhollow. "He had Antonio's personal contact card.""That boy is going to put someone in trouble one day." Sophia seethed."He just wanted to tell his buddy that his mother was in trouble and ask for help.""I bet Antonio wouldn't pay an ear.""He said yes." Nevena sat up. "But there's a condition.""I know it." So

"Be the man who gave his buddy a contact card and told him to call if he ever needed you."Antonio exhaled slowly, controlledโ and dropped his hand. He stepped back. Just one step and turned away from her.He walked to the decanter. Poured two fingers of whiskey and drank it standing, staring at the drawn curtains."She arrested me, put me in cuffs," he said. "And dragged me to court in front of my own men. Made a spectacle.""She also did the same with me. I respected it." Nevena cut in."Forgive meโbut I'm not that merciful." Antonio obliged."I don't mean you forgive her. But she's facing the panel alone. They're going to bury her."Antonio set the glass down. "You think I can stop that?" He turned. "I'm not a politician, Tourist. I don't own judges. I own casinos and hotel contracts and a few people who owe me favors.""But you know people who know people." Nevena pressed calmly. "That boy gave

The lock clicked."Mr. Hunt's private waiting room," he announced, stepping aside. "He'll be informed of your presence immediately upon arrival."Nevena walked in without thanking him.Junior followed, briefcase in hand. The door closed behind themโsoft, final. The room was dressed in glamour. Deep leather chairs. A decanter on a side table. Heavy curtains drawn against the morning. One door and no telephone.Nevena stood in the center, arms crossed, staring at him. The suit. The briefcase. The contact card. For a split second, he looked like a miniature of Antonio."How do you even have that card?"Junior touched his breast pocket. "Buddy gave it to me after I met him about your court case. Told me if I ever needed himโreally needed himโto call, not to run to his house at midnight."
๐๐๐๐ข๐โ๐ฌ ๐๐๐ฆ๐๐ฌ๐ข๐ฌยฐยฐยฐOutside smelled of stale earth and cold wind. Nevena had asked twice where they were going. Junior hadn't answered either time, he just led her to the road and flagged down a cab.The driverโa thick-necked man with tired eyesโglanced at them. "Where to?"Junior leaned forward and switched languages like flipping a knife. "La casa de mi madre. El barrio viejo. Santa Fe." The driver's eyes flicked to Nevena, then back to Junior. A beat. A slow nod."ยฟSola la casa?""Sรญ. Ella no necesita saber la direcciรณn."The driver grunted and clicked the lock. Junior reached for the door but Nevena's hand tightened on his shoulder. "What did you say to him?" Her pulse climbed. "I have a bad feeling.""Trust me." Junior turned at her. "We aren't getting into trouble."Nevena stared back. This wasn't the boy who'd asked for crayons yesterday.Trusting his guideline, she settled into the cab with him. The driver dropped the meter and they pulled away from the curb. Ne

After a while, she came back walking cold, Nevena snapped a gaze at her sensing something wrong. โDid something happen?. You look moodyโJunior tilted his head at Sophia then went back to his book, uninterested. โCan I see you out for a few minutes?โ Sophia beckoned on Nevena.Nevena gave a curt nod, understanding that whatever it was, wasn't for Junior. She singled out a word problem and instructed Junior to practice with while she was gone.In the enclosure of Sophia's room, Sophia summarizes the trouble Breanna was in and the disturbing information she got about the possible outcome from a colleague.โMaybe we should call her up?โ Nevena suggested.Sophia hesitatesโ a phone call during a panel hearing could go south, but Nevena's persuasion won.
