Chapter 4 - Temperature Rising

Liana

As I let myself in, the smell of the motel room hit me.

It smelled like disinfectant and damp carpet, the kind of clean that never quite erased what had been there before.

I parked the cart in a corner, taking out the food and placing on the small counter.

I crossed the room in three quick steps.

Remi was curled on his side, too still.

His normally handsome face was pale except for the hectic splotches of red slashed across his cheeks and brow.

“Hey,” I whispered, brushing my fingers over his forehead.

Too warm.

My chest tightened. “Rem, wake up.”

His lashes fluttered. “You’re back,” he murmured, voice thin but smiling anyway.

“Yes sweets, picked up the cart from Aldo as well”

I reached for the thermometer, already knowing the answer. The number blinked up at me, higher than it had been this morning.

My hands shook as I set it aside. I frowned because it was obvious the fever still persisted.

“That’s not good, is it?” he asked gently, like he was the one comforting me.

“We’ll manage,” I said quickly. “We always do.”

“Upsydozey lazybones, I come bearing food and a treat” I aimed for a cheerful note to cover my concern.

I helped him sit up, propping pillows behind his back.

Fetching the food, I sat on the edge of the bed next to him, dividing the food and and utensils and placing his carefully on his lap.

”Go ahead, dig in…no treat if you don’t eat your dinner first.” I said upbeat.

He smiled wanly but then squinted at the kiddies meal he saw me holding.

“Didn’t want to stuff my face, gotta still perform tonite..” I said quickly.

“I call bullshit…you can eat anyone under the table…” he deadpanned.

I gulped at the accusation. That’s what happens when you are two parts of one whole, it is almost impossible to hoodwink one another…

”Whatevs Mr KnowItAll…you calling me a foodhog now?”

I tried for jocular and he gave a weak laugh that ended up in a coughing fit.

He rubbed his hand over his chest obviously in discomfort.

My heart was torn watching him. If we didn't need the money so desperately, there was no way I would leave him tonight.

He ate slowly, apologetically, as if each bite was a burden.

“By the way, I confirmed tonite’s gig with Rory and told him you were sick. I told him to bring out the piano instead so I can perform solo.”

“What no..” Remi protested…”there is no way that you are going there alone, it’s a freaking Gentlemans club."

"Plus you would be walking there by yourself..”

His lips firmed in a familiar firm line.

“Not to mention that sleazy bastard will shortchange you with pay cos it would be only you and not me..”

I sighed. He was going to be difficult about this.

“Remi, please think about this.*

*It’s the first time we have been given a Friday night gig."

I paused to let that sink in.

*Plus, we only have the room booked for another two nights and its too cold for us to be outside or separated in a shelter. We need funds until you’re better” I tried reasoning.

He slumped back against the pillows, weak and exhausted just from eating and gave a defeated huff.

“Okay but promise me you will call as soon as you reach the Club and Uber back when the gig is done…there is no way you are walking back alone after 12am”

I kissed him quickly on the cheek, relieved that he wasn’t being more difficult.

“Okay dad, will do. Let me clear up here then I’m gonna have a quick shower and set you up with your meds”

I fled the room before he came up with any more objections.

I had a superquick shower, the temperemantal water pressure didn't allow for dawdling.

I put on my better black jeans, long sleeve henley, chunky sweater and black Converses with haste.

That was the last of the baby lotion.

I sighed…I really needed to make some money or the eczema would be back with a vengeance.

But those were luxuries considering we might be homeless in two days.

A spritz of lavender oil spritzed on my wrists and pulse points and I was good to go.

The performance clothes were kept at the Club so my backpack just had my pepper spray, brush, some make up and wipes…

Remi was already half asleep and grumbled when I woke him to take his meds.

His face seemed redder than when I had gone to get ready.

I touched his forehead. That too felt even warmer.

I didn't like this at all. Again something told me not to leave him.

I could feel my eyes welling. It had to be done. We needed a payday.

But whether he grumbled or threw a tantrum, we were going to the clinic tomorrow…

I was not at all happy at his condition, or the wheezy sound of his chest .

The over-the-counter meds were not cutting it.

I pulled the blankets over him and brushed back the damp strands sticking on his forehead.

I placed a gentle kiss on his heated cheek.

“Love you my heart, be back soon” I whispered.

He blinked drowsily…”Love you more Lia” he croaked in response.

Looking at the time on the bedside alarm clock, I grabbed my backpack, a banana and water bottle and the key card and let myself out quietly.

I was still uneasy about leaving him on his own but knew I had no choice.

Sometimes love meant leaving for a little while to ensure we could be together forever.

Luigi “She was with child. But she wasn’t just pregnant,” I said quietly. “She was carrying twins.” That revelation landed in the room and hit like a physical blow. Luca straightened breath coming out in a loud exhale. “Twins?” Liam’s face went pale. HIs fingers tightened slightly on his cup, knuckles whitening. I nodded once, took a breath “Months passed, then one day… Siobhán called Amelia. From Ireland. Pregnant. Alone. Desperate.” Luca’s expression hardened. “She and Amelia were still close...she knew Amelia could not conceive due to her heart condition,” I said. “She needed the money and wanted to know that the child would go to a good home, so she offered her one of the babies for adoption” Both of them were now leaning forward, totally immersed. “Amelia went to Ireland…just before the birth, signed the adoption papers and brought that baby back. Raised him as her own.” My eyes lifted to Liam. “That child… was you. After I read the letter…” I said, my voice quieter now, “

Luigi The memory from yesterday flickered—too much tension, too much at stake—and then that letter… changing everything in the middle of it all. And now across me, Luca and Liam waited, eyes sharp for me to continue. And I suppose like any story worth telling, the best place to start was the beginning...not yesterday...the very beginning "There was a time we were best friends, brothers.." I said. "Seamus, his second Fergus, Stefano and I. Inseparable. The Fearsome Foursome, they nicknamed us." I smiled at that. I looked at Liam now..."We were almost the same age, Seamus a year older than us, Fergus two years older. But even at just nineteen, Seamus wanted what had never been done before...for us to merge...be one empire, just run from two different cities." He straightened in his chair, fully focussed. I had his attention so I went on. "Stefano and I were already getting ready to take over this side, and we started small so that neither empire would reject a merge. Joint deals, s

LuigiThe house settled into a quiet kind of calm after the boys went upstairs. Not peaceful… just a pause before the storm.I turned to Maria. I didn’t have to say a word. She crossed the space between us and stepped into my arms like she had done a thousand times before, her hands sliding around my back, holding me together when I felt like I might come apart. I closed my eyes and buried my face in her hair. This woman… she was my anchor. My home. We had been kids when it started—high school sweethearts with more stubbornness than sense. She had been the opposite of me. A good girl, raised right, old-school Italian family. Church every Sunday, respect, tradition… all the things I had pushed against back then. And me? Stefano and I had been trouble. Everyone knew it. But she chose me anyway. She always did, from the beginning. And when I left last night… when the call had come and things got dangerous and I had no choice…She hadn’t begged. Hadn’t cried. Just kissed me softly and

DentonThen I slowed. Because this part—This part mattered.“She didn’t know who you were,” I said quietly. “Not really. Not what your name meant. Not the history between the two families. She and Remi were never exposed to that part of Seamus' business...he left it to the eldest...Liam”I let that sink in. “So when Remi got sick,” I continued. “And when your offer came… she took it.” My jaw tightened. “She took it because she had no other choice and she would do anything for Remi.”Silence again. Thick. Heavy. But his eyes were wide, breathing laboured. Then I said it. The truth he needed to hear. “She wasn’t just innocent, Adriano…” My voice dropped. “She loved you.”The impact of that—It was visible. Clear. He flinched...held his chest, like something inside him cracked open.“She refused to sign that contract,” I went on, “not because she was playing you… but because she was protecting you.”His eyes snapped to mine. Confusion. Fear. “Today,” I said slowly, “is her eighteenth birt

Denton It took everything in me to step back. Everything. Because the sight of his blood—split lip, dazed eyes, the mark of my fist still fresh on his face—It didn’t touch the rage inside me. Didn’t even come close. If anything, it made it worse. Because it wasn’t enough. Not for what I had just seen. Not for what he had revealed and not said. My hands curled into fists at my sides, my chest rising and falling too fast, too hard. I knew Adriano. Knew exactly what he was capable of. In this line of business, we had fought side by side, against each other, bled in the same dirt more times than I could count. He could take me on. Stand toe to toe with me and not back down. And right now—The only thing stopping me from going further… Was that he wasn’t fighting back. He was just… standing there. Taking it. And somehow that made it worse. I dragged in a sharp breath, forcing control back into my limbs, into my mind. Because if I didn’t—I wouldn’t stop. And if I didn’t stop…I would

Adriano Years of training and conditioning kicked in. If you preceive a threat, you don't think, you react. The second I heard movement in the hallway, every instinct I had kicked in. I moved fast, silent, pressing myself behind the door, my 9mm already in my hand, safety off, finger steady along the trigger. Waiting. Breathing slow. Listening. Whoever it was… they were coming in. The footsteps got closer. Then—The door pushed opened. “Adriano? Arianna?” I let out a breath of relief. Denton. For a split second, I thought I’d imagined it. That my mind was playing tricks on me. But no—There he was. Stepping into the room like he belonged there. And I stepped out instinctively. “Denton, I—” I didn’t even get the words out. Because everything he was holding—Flowers. Gift bags. Slipped from his hands. One by one. Hitting the floor in dull, heavy thuds. He didn’t even notice. Couldn’t. His eyes were fixed on the room. Taking it in. Every broken shard of glass. Every torn piece of
