Nora felt the weight of his words but her mind was drifting off to somewhere else. Glimpses of the past starting floating through, ones that she had tried so hard to drown. Stubborn memories that refused to sink. Now they forced her to relive through every moment that had lead her here.

Her mother’s death when she was six left a void. Her father, August Reeves, tried to fill it by marrying into another Mafia family. Marcella came into their lives with her daughter, Aria, but for Nora, it was just torment.

Nora still remembered her very first encounter with Marcella. She wasn't tainted by misfortune yet. She still had hope in her. Just desperate for a mother’s warmth. Little Nora looked up at her new mom with wide eyes. She hesitated for a second. Then made up her mind and reached out for a hug. An innocent act of welcome.

Marcella gave her a dismissive glance before shoving her away like something diseased. Nora saw her smooth out her dress, like she was brushing off something filthy.

That was the first time Nora understood.

Marcella wasn’t here to love her.

Her love and attention was reserved entirely for Aria.

Aria, six years older, was her mother's mirror image in every way, cunning and ruthless. Nora became their scapegoat, treated more like a servant than family. She scrubbed floors and fetched water with her hands and spirits bruised.

It was rare for August to be home. When he eventually noticed the bruises on her arms or faint scars on her face, his expression would darken with concern. He’d ask what had happened. Nora’s heart would start racing in hope. Thinking he might finally understand her predicament. But before she could respond, Aria would always step in. She used her innocent voice to brush them off as accidents. “Clumsy little Nora.” Aria would add with a sweet smile. Even if it was rare, August’s presence was the only comfort Nora had.

Behind closed doors, Marcella and Aria found joy in tormenting her. Nora learned to hide her bruises and scars. One night, Aria pulled her into a dim room and threw her onto the cold floor. She turned on the TV. A grainy video started playing. There was a man on his knees. He was pleading and sobbing. Then a loud bang.

Nora flinched so hard she nearly toppled over, her tiny hands flying to her ears. The man collapsed, blood spreading across the floor like ink. Aria leaned in, her voice a whisper of poisoned honey. "This could be you if you don’t behave." Nora was too young to understand the weight of death but she understood fear. And that night, she learned there were things in this world worse than monsters under the bed.

Marcella also seemed to revel in her fear. She often flashed her gun before the trembling kid. Just to watch her panic. Once, when Nora was seven, Aria took it further again, chasing her through the house with that same gun. Aria cornered Nora and held the weapon inches from her face. The child squeezed her eyes shut in fear. Nora was convinced that her life would end in that moment.

When Marcella found out about this, she immediately scolded Aria. But it wasn't because she was concerned about Nora. It was to caution her daughter. Not to do anything too visible. An evidence that August might notice. But the damage was already done. Nora’s fear of guns rooted deeply inside her. It never lessened as she grew older.

August was known for being a powerful honorable man. He had morals and refused to harm the innocent. He protected his family and their identity from public eyes. Both his daughters were homeschooled and kept isolated from outside world. It was a lonely existence, but Nora grew up with it.

But Marcella and Aria never maintained any such principles. They were ambitious and would do anything for their desires. As Aria grew older, she learned to manipulate powerful men. She used her charm and even her body to secure whatever she wanted.

Just before Nora turned twenty, August realised Marcella and Aria's true nature, realizing how far they would go. Betraying every value he'd tried to uphold. One night, a heated argument broke out. August threatened to cut ties with both women if they didn’t change.

For a moment, Nora dared to wish for a change. Then, without any notice, her father’s health collapsed. A sudden stroke, the doctors claimed. But Nora couldn’t ignore certain hints. How Marcella’s lips curved ever so slightly when the news broke. Or how Aria’s gaze glittered with something close to victory. With her father in a coma, Nora’s fragile shield was gone.

Marcella and Aria grew even bolder. Their cruelty became unrestrained. Marcella dismissed Nora’s education as a waste of money. There would be no future for Nora. Instead, she forced Nora into the role of caretaker for her comatose father. A man who, even in his helpless state, offered more comfort than anyone else in the house. But deep down, she knew this fragile safety wouldn’t last forever. And when the time came, they would find a way to destroy her completely.

Luca slipped through the hidden path to Nora's cell. He carried a small bag and a beaming smile. Nora felt a rush of relief and excitement when she saw him. Seeing him again after days of isolation lifted her spirits. Luca settled beside her, eager to share the latest. "Aria, Dante's furious," he began, his tone half-worried, half-amused. "He's convinced I'm seeing you, and he ranted on about... about some things." Luca hesitated, choosing his words carefully. "He thinks you betrayed Cain. People are saying horrible things about you, even Dante believes them." He stopped short of repeating Dante's insults about Aria, worried it might hurt her. Nora tried to keep her face steady, her heart racing at the idea of Luca not believing Aria's past activities. Was her act not convincing enough? She thought she'd managed so far, but the risk was real now. She couldn't let Luca see through the cracks because then Dante would too. Her mind drifted, lost in the fear of her cover being blown.

Luca stood his ground. He attempted to feign ignorance as Dante glared at him. "I know where you're going with this, Luca. No point in pretending now." Dante's voice was low and dangerous. But Luca simply shook his head. "I have no idea what you're talking about." He was anxious but he kept his expression neutral. He was scared that if Dante came to know about his trips, it will affect Aria more than it would affect him. So he was desperate to maintain the facade. Dante's frustration reached its peak. "Don't... play games with me. We both know well that you've been visiting her. What kind of hold does that low-life... Aria... have over you?" He spat the name like a curse. His eyes narrowed. "She. Is. Filth. Luca. A conniving little snake! And somehow she's managed to seduce my little brother too." That was it for Luca. The breaking point. He could feel his chest getting ignited. A hot surge of anger rising within himself too. "That's not true!" He shouted. The words burst fort

Dante finally returned. His mood was visibly darker and more focused than before. He took in every detail of Nora with his sharp gaze. She could tell immediately that he was in his mood to punish. He refused to take his eyes off her and it made Nora uneasy. "Oh... So I see that you're doing well here." He sneered with contempt. "Look at you." His gaze slithered over her body to scrutinize every inch. She could feel the judgment in his eyes. He was silently noting how the small, rationed meals had brought a hint of life back to her weak appearance.Nora's thoughts flitted back to Aria, her stepsister. Aria had always been bitterly jealous of Nora's curvier figure. She used to call her "fat" and often tried to deny her meals. The only reason she'd survived those times was because of a few kind maids who would sneak her food, until Marcella found out and fired every single one of them.Nora was snapped back into reality as Dante roughly yanked her hand forward. She winced and braced her

Dante returned, and Nora lay still, feigning unconsciousness, her heart racing in anticipation. She hoped her trick would fool him. "If you really think that I'll take you to a hospital while you play dead," he said with his voice full of disdain, "you're mistaken." Her heart sank at his words. But Dante left her there without further punishment. Nora found that spark of hope again. Once he was gone, she caught the whispering voices of the guards outside the open door. "How is she even alive?" one asked. "It's been four days without food or water, right?" The other guard agreed. Nora's heart started pounding in fear again. She could almost hear the gears of thoughts turning in Dante's mind. Him inching closer to truth. A few hours later, bland food was brought to her, the sole purpose of keeping her alive, she realized, as Dante still needed answers. The guards were ready to force-feed her by command but that was unnecessary. Hunger was gnawing at her belly so hard, Nora didn't need

As Luca approached, disbelief crashed over him like a wave. The figure slumped on the cold floor was just a girl. A fragile, battered thing. She looked like she belonged anywhere but in Dante’s grasp. He just couldn't understand why his brother would go after someone so vulnerable.Kneeling down, he brushed back some messy hair from her face. She was out cold, with bruises all over her delicate features. He noticed she was wearing expensive clothes. Proof that she wasn’t a nameless nobody. But they were dirty and torn. Like she’d been through a lot in a short time. Luca wondered. What had happened to her? What story did she carry? But none of that mattered to him right then. All he saw was someone who needed help.Sympathy flooded him, a quiet, undeniable ache in his chest. He didn’t know how she’d ended up here, or why Dante was keeping her hidden… but one thing, he was sure of. He couldn’t just leave her like this.He slipped back quietly but quickly to gather some bandages. When h

I always knew my brother was strict. Fierce, ruthless, almost obsessively protective. Especially since Cain was gone. But lately, Dante's concern for my safety felt more stifling than ever. It was like a dog collar. Choking on whatever scrap of freedom I had left."Stay home, Luca." It's the same tiring command every day. "It's not safe out there." He made it clear to the guards: "Don’t let Luca leave the house. And if he does, keep the security tight." He barely let me out of his sight. I was constantly watched, like some fragile thing he thought would shatter at the slightest breeze. He still treated me like a kid, even though I was nineteen now.But even I could see what his endless protectiveness was hiding. He didn’t just want to keep me safe—he was afraid.Ever since Cain's death, Dante had changed. He wasn't just my overprotective older brother anymore. He became a force solely driven by revenge.
