When I thought it was going to be the end of the day, as he had already given me many surprises, Nikolai took me to a room.

I was completely perplexed, as I didn't know where he was taking me or what his plan was.

I saw a flicker of nervousness and anticipation in his eyes, which is very rare. He seemed almost unsure, as if he thought his plan might backfire.

Slowly, Nikolai pushed open the door to the room, and I stepped in.

Nikolai held my hand tightly, as if the thing he was about to show me would shock me. The first thing that greeted me was the faint scent of lavender, which felt almost nostalgic.

The moment the lights in the room were turned on, my breath caught in my throat. The room was small and intimate.

There was a piano in the corner, a small canvas on a stand with unfinished brush strokes, and shades of baby blues, as if someone were painting for a baby boy.

A plush reading nook by the window had books stacked haphazardly and photographs.

I can’t imagine how traumatic that would be for her the fire would def make her think of her family even if she knows they survived now. And we were soo close to finding out about their late baby boy and her memory!

Nikolai's POV Betrayal is a slow-burning poison. It doesn't hit you like a bullet but seeps into your bones slowly, making you bleed quietly. It taints your soul like no other thing. I had lived in a world where betrayal was currency and blood was often cheaper than loyalty, yet nothing prepared me for the blow I received a few days ago. It cut me deeply and personally. Because this time it is not my ally but someone close who has stabbed me in the back. It is someone inside my circle who had sensitive information and details about our safe house rotation, shipment timings, and internal routes. That kind of knowledge couldn’t come from a rival gang; it came from someone who sat close to me, someone whom I trusted. Since then, I have been trying to track him down but couldn't. Even the surveillance cameras in the house are out of service. I couldn't catch who placed the recorder inside the study. The only person who entered the study before the meeting was Alessia. But sh

I tried taking deep breaths as the last incident played in front of me like a movie. My birthday. Surprise. Room.Photographs.Fire! My eyelids felt like a stone as I fluttered my eyes open. The first thing that came into my view was the white ceiling. I look around to find myself in a hospital bed. My heart came to my throat and panic jolted through my chest. "My baby!" I gasped, my eyes wrapping around my stomach. "My baby!" The monitor next to me started beeping erratically. A nurse immediately rushed to my side. "Mada,m breath, everything is okay. You are safe" she told me. "My baby," I cried, still not able to breathe properly. "Is my baby okay? Please tell me" She placed her hand gently on mine and nodded softly. "Yes ma'am. "Next week, we are visiting the hospital for the abortion." His words echoed in my head. For a moment, I wondered if I had heard him wrong. Maybe I was hallucinating… but no, the look in his eyes told me otherwise. He meant it. Every single word. I blinked at him, incredulously. How could he even say that? Not even a minute had passed when he claimed the baby was his as well. The soft nature I had seen in the last few days replayed in my head, completely contrasting with the man standing in front of me. Was it all a drama? A manipulation? I cursed myself for thinking even once that he could change. The man who could kill his baby once could do it again. In fact, he was ready for it. "Are you even thinking about what you’re saying?" I asked after a long minute of silence. "I know exactly what I am saying, Alessia," he stated in a firm tone. "How could you even…" I was so surprised that I couldn't articulate what I wanted to say. "This is your baby as well." "I kn

When I reached the location, Marco hugged me tightly. "You don't know, Alessia, how stressed I was for you." I nodded. "Are you alright?" he asked. "I am fine, Marco." I licked my lips and looked around to make sure no one was watching us. It wasn't easy to come here alone. For the first time, guards didn't try to stop me. I am afraid it's another web created by Nikolai. If he is playing with me again, just the way he did with Dimitri. "We don't have much time," I told him. He nodded, understanding the situation. "Where is the black book?" he asked, getting straight to the point. I sighed and slowly reached inside my purse. My fingers trembled as I pulled it out. I hate my heart! Even though Nikolai has made his intentions clear to kill my unborn baby, my heart is still trembling at the thought of going against him. I inhaled deeply and exhaled sharply. I shouldn't forget that I am doing this for my baby. If I don't stand up to Nikolai, he will surely kill me

Alessia's POV Outside the mansion, the wind howled like a wounded beast, slapping against the windowpane. The clouds thundered as lightning flashed across the sky. The storm outside the mansion was wild, violent, and restless, just like my heart. I bit my lower lip as I tried to keep my emotions in check. I didn't blink as my eyes stared at the file in my hand; my fingers ran over the corner of a paper absently, but my eyes weren’t really reading anything. These are the exact papers that I demanded from Marco, and I received them this evening. I asked for them myself, but now that they are here, I didn’t know if I had the strength to go through them properly. I leaned back slightly; my mind was at war. After everything that has happened, this is the best solution for me and my baby, yet my heart is in ripples. I feel hollow inside. It wasn't supposed to feel like this. I feel so cold and alone. It seems as if my life is coming to an end, and the storm outside indic

The gun in my hands shook uncontrollably as he asked me to kill him. My eyes flicked between the gun and Nikolai, who was still on his knees. "What are you thinking about, Alessia? Go ahead," he whispered. "Just kill me," he choked out. His eyes were locked with mine. "I swear, I will not stop you. I will not even blink." He gasped, trying his best not to let the tears slip down his face. My throat constricted as I fought with my emotions.I couldn't move, blink, or speak. "This pain..." His voice cracked. His hand rose and pointed to his chest. "This pain of betrayal, YOUR BETRAYAL, it's becoming too much for me to bear." As if it were his breaking point, one hot, thick tear dribbled down his face and rolled down his cheek. The tear of pain. The tear I wanted to see in his eyes. The pain I wanted him to feel. But now that he was exactly in the state I wanted him, why was it hurting me so badly? Why does my chest ache like someone is tearing me apart from the inside? Why d

His body jolted slightly as the words left my mouth. It felt as if someone had struck him physically. "What?" He was completely surprised. His forehead wrinkled as his eyes flicked again between me and the divorce papers. "You are kidding me, right?" he asked in disbelief. "I am not kidding you, Nikolai. These are actually divorce papers. I asked Marco for help. He did and delivered them on time." I breathed; my chest felt heavy, "and let me tell you, Nikolai, it's my decision. No one has forced me into this. This is just to clear your misunderstanding." He licked his lips. His head cocked slightly as if he still couldn't believe his ears. For the moment, I shut off all the feelings of my heart. I was only listening to my brain. Slowly, he reached out for the papers in my hand. His fingers trembled slightly as he grabbed them. Silence spread between us as he slowly opened the file. His fingers trembled as they turned the first page. His eyes scanned the bold letters: P

Suddenly, I heard a loud gunshot that shook me in my place. My heart pounded fast as the loud voice echoed from inside the mansion. I felt my heart come to my throat as I looked around. I couldn't stop myself from opening the door and stepping out of the car. The sound of another gunshot, followed by glass shattering, made me run inside the mansion. Because of my slippery feet, I almost slipped but managed to compose myself just in time. My surroundings blurred and turned dark as I ran toward the room where I had left Nikolai alone. The door was slightly ajar, so I pushed it open to find Nikolai with a gun in his hand, pressed against his stomach, his back facing me. "Nikolai!" I shouted. Slowly, he turned around. His eyes were filled with pain, such a deep pain that it tore my soul apart. Tears streamed down his cheeks, his eyes were bloodshot red, and his lower lip quivered. His shoulders slumped, and his face looked pale, almost lifeless. "Why are you here, Alessia?" he as

At first, I was completely taken aback when he slammed his lips against mine. I wasn't prepared for it.Not at this moment. He always does things unexpectedly. But this ...The desperation with which he kissed me took my breath away. It wasn't soft or gentle, it was raw, fiery, and filled with a thousand unspoken emotions. The force of the kiss made me stumble back, but he was quick to wrap his arms tighter around me, pulling me so close to him as if terrified I’d disappear again. His heart hammered with equal intensity under my palms. "You—were you really there?" I asked in complete surprise. He softly nodded, his lips stretching into a wider smile. "Why didn't you come to me earlier, Nick? Why?" I demanded, clutching his shirt tightly. I would have actually been happy if I had known he was there. All the time, I had the feeling that Nikolai was with me, yet I still felt hollow inside. "Say something, Nick!" He chuckled softly before cupping my face once again, holding me as if I were fragile and priceless at the same time. "Because there, you weren’t just fighting, Alessia. You were shining.” He paused, brushing his thumb over my cheek and catching the fresh tear that slipped out. “I didn’t want to steal your moment,” he added, smiling tenderly. “But… it was I who clapped for you first.” I shook my head; he was impossible. The moment the intruder's face came into the light, the gun wobbled in my grip before slipping from my hands with a loud clatter. My breath hitched in my throat. Everything seemed to cease in those moments. My heart pounded so hard that it was deafening. I couldn't breathe. I couldn't blink. I was afraid he might disappear from my sight if I blinked. Am I being delusional or what? Because right in front of me stood Nikolai. My Nick. My mind refused to accept what my eyes were showing me. The doctor told me he had died and had already been buried, that I lost him forever, that he would never come back again, but he was standing right here, right in front of me, tall and very much alive. But he looked very weak. His eyes were tired and sunken. Yet they lit up the moment they caught my gaze in the darkness. Both of us were frozen in our places. "Nick," I whispered to myself. It was such a low murmur that I was sure he didn't hear it, but maybe he heard the voice o

  • Mafia's Rebellious Bride: His Forbidden Obsession    108. Missing him

The applause that followed my crowning ceremony was deafening. It should have made my heart swell with pride, but it didn’t. I couldn't immerse myself completely in happiness because something was missing. It wasn't just anything; it was the biggest part of my life. Nikolai. This place was and is rightly his. I am merely filling his space to prevent the throne from falling into the wrong hands. I was strong all this time, but I am unsure how I will rule this Empire alone. Drawing a deep breath, I stepped down from the stage with slow and steady steps, ensuring that I kept my chin high to prevent the crown from falling. It is not just a crown; it is a heavy responsibility that rests on my head. People bowed before me, and a few came forward to congratulate me with warm words. "Congratulations, La Regina,” they said. “You’ve made history.” I mumbled a small thank you with a soft smile on my lips. I could see that a few of them were faking their smiles. Of course, not everyone ca

“This is mine!” Marco roared, pointing to the throne behind us “I built this! I cleaned the blood! I earned every piece of this empire while you were out living in your bubble!”“You stole what was never yours to begin with,” I said, in a low but steady voice. “You manipulated the system, lied to the council, and betrayed your own bloodline. The only thing you’ve earned is a disgrace.” I spat venomously. He opened his mouth to say something, but before he could, I cut him off. "Nikolai transferred his property in my name with the hope that I will raise our child and give him everything he deserves. I can not let anyone snatch my baby's right" I stated. Silence spread in the hall, and Marco broke. “You think you can fool everyone with that belly and a couple of forged papers?” he spat. “You don’t know anything about ruling an empire, Alessia. You’re just a spoiled little brat and we are not even sure if you are carrying Nikolai's blood!”Unable to stop myself anymore, I slapped him

“My birth certificate, my documents, and even DNA tests, if you want,” I said coolly. “All prove I was born of the legal wife of Mr. Rossi. I am the only legitimate heir; Marco is...” “Enough!” Mr. Rossi roared as I started opening his cards one by one, cutting me off mid-sentence. The dirty secrets he has been hiding from everyone for so long are now being exposed, and he just can't stand it. I have always considered Marco my real brother because he never let me feel otherwise, but only we family members know the truth. He was not my mother's son. He was the result of my father's betrayal. "I haven't even started, Dad," I said, infusing the word with honey-dripped venom. “What are you implying?” one of the council members asked, frowning. “How could you make such a serious accusation against your own father and brother?” “Whose father? Which brother?” I asked sharply, turning to the man with fire in my eyes. “They both died for me the day they tried to kill me.” The hall

"NO" Silence. Ear-deafening silence. This is what spread after I announced my decision. A single word detonated like a bomb. First, they were not expecting me to be here, and after knowing the reason behind my presence, they were definitely not expecting this answer from me. My father flinched in his position, and Marco's smile vanished. "What did you just say?" Marco growled near my ear, narrowing his eyes at me. He couldn't believe his ears. "I said no," I repeated just for him, just in case he didn't hear me. I turned slightly to face the Mafia council. "I am not ready to give my consent to make him a mafia king," I declared. The council members exchanged looks of confusion among themselves. The crowd gasped and whispered amongst themselves. "Any particular reason behind it?" The senior-most council member asked. "My husband built this Empire with his blood and sweat. He didn't inherit it; he earned it through scars. Before handing it over to someone else,

Black dress... This is what you are supposed to wear for the mafia king's crowning ceremony. It is a sign of power and mourning for the bloodshed that leads to the throne. It is a old tradition. That's why I wore white! Because I wasn’t here to mourn. I was here to defy. The black dress sent by Marco lay in the corner of the room like a rag while I slipped into a satin white gown, which I was meant to wear on my wedding day. I chuckled to myself. What irony. The silence in the room pressed into my skin like needles. I stood in front of the mirror, staring blankly at my own reflection. The dark circles under my eyes were clearly visible, and I hadn’t even tried to hide them. Let the world see what this house has done to me. My hair fell messily over my shoulder. I picked up a brush, and, as usual, I was about to tie it up when I remembered that the other women would have styled their hair into stiff buns because this was what was required of them today. So, I won't! I dropped

Thirty hours... it has been thirty hours since I last had a bite. The hunger was burning in my stomach, but what was worse was the thirst. My tongue felt like sandpaper, and my head pounded as if someone were hammering it from the inside. At one point, when I couldn't hold it anymore, I went to the bathroom and took a few sips to keep my baby alive. Marco knows the condition of my baby. He knows that I need not only meals but also the medicines for my baby to live, and he is still doing this. I don't have any purpose to live anymore. With Nikolai gone, I would have gladly given my life too, but in all this, my baby is suffering. It has nothing to do with betrayal, power, or position. I have spent the entire day lying lifeless on the bed, staring at the ceiling as if it held answers. Tears dribbled down the sides of my eyes, dampening the pillow. The only sound that could be heard in the room was the soft ticking of the antique clock on the wall. My stomach groaned again, but I d
