Twenty Three

“What do you want me to do?”

“I want you to come with me. I want you to go away with me for a few days”

“Okay, I’ll go anywhere with you.”

She looked up into his eyes, studying him. He only told her to get into the car, telling her that he was going to drive this time.

“Where are we going?”

“Some place that is going to make me forget,” he said. He put his hand gently over hers, forcing a smile. She had no idea what extent he was willing to reach to make herself feel better.

As they settled in the car, the sun came up, its luminous outline like burning embers. Its light scattered across the plain, shedding color over every shadow.

When they began driving, she did nothing but condemn herself in her seat in that untimely stolen moment. She would say no word to him until he was ready to even look at her. Quietly she rested in her seat and closed her eyes momentarily. He turned to her briefly, watching as she embraced herself when the air around them got cold. At length she opened her eyes
