"My apologies," Aurora bowed her head.

She could see the man who was tall and very muscular was trying to see her face but she would not look up as she was not allowed to do so.

"Wh..............."

Aurora's heart beat wildly, he wanted to know her name so that he could make her get dismissed by a single word.

"Caspian."

She saw that his attention was turned to someone else, and she took the chance to slide away very fast,

"Douglas." He responded, his voice was rich and she could tell they knew each very well as there was affection and playfulness in their voices.

"Wait!"

She could hear one of them calling out to her but she turned the corner and dashed as fast as she could.

She stopped when she was well hidden and she was breathing heavily, she went to search for the laundry room which also took time.

Everything was new to her as she had never been in this part of the palace. It was nice to work inside, her hands had callouses from all the hard labor and the only upside to having cold weather was that your skin stayed fair and that was the only advantage.

She finally found it and dropped off the clothes, she went back to their slave's quarters kitchen as it was time for some lunch.

She took her soup and checked her name in, Aurora made her way to her friends. She sat down,

"Did you hear, Constance has the measles," Evelyn had started already on the gossip that was spreading like wildfire.

"I know it's a shame and it times like these where medication is scarce." Agnes chimed in.

"I wonder who took over her duties? I mean Constance was in the ranks you know." Lucy whispered.

"I did."

Everyone turned to her, "Aurora you lucky bastard, how did you manage to do it? Let us in on the secret." Ida asked her.

"Cathy called me, and I went inside and found Madam. She assigned me to the room."

"Did you meet any handsome men?" Lucy asked eagerly.

"I only met two but I didn't get to look them in the face."

"Bummer." As everyone's excitement dimmed down significantly.

"It's only her first day you know, and we don't know how long Constance will have the measles for," Agnes added once more.

"Who knows? You might marry rich Aurora. And we will serve her." Ella added and they all burst into laughter.

That was so far-fetched as the rich only married in their social class even if it is meant for the benefit of the countries and was all political, it stayed that way.

The sad thing for them is if you got married you aren't allowed to carry on working here, as only single women are allowed to.

Madam Beatrice was alone till this day so she would not get kicked out of the palace, so usually some girls dated in secret, and when things got too serious they would leave the palace and marry, or some were forced to if they got pregnant and could not hide it.

It was a pity that some girls used illegal methods to get rid of the baby and they died altogether but a few were lucky to live.

Then they were some with secret lovers and when things got too serious they would have to sacrifice love for livelihood as both would be coming from no means and this was the only way they could survive.

They did not have the luxury of the elite to do as they pleased. Personally, she avoided men and love altogether,

She just could not see herself in a relationship and walking away from it so easily, she didn't want the heartache some carried, the regrets, the pain, the numbness, or the depression some fell into.

Her friends often encouraged her to be bolder and out there but she did not want to be. She liked being reserved and closed off.

She didn't want the same thing that she had experienced in the past to ever happen to her. She shuddered at the thought.

Aurora hated it when she would have memories from the past, it was a place that she did not want to visit.

It was a dark and lonely place,

"Aurora are you even listening to us?"

"Sorry?"

She did not even know who had asked her the question all she heard was her name and she came back to the present.

"My point exactly, where does your mind wander off to? Did this handsome man you met today make you daydream and want unicorns and rainbows." Lucy said dramatically.

"As if."

"You should have a little bit of fun you know, we are not getting any younger by the day," Agnes added.

"Why do you make it seem as if we are old?" Aurora chuckled as she responded to Agnes.

"Exactly you are nineteen Aurora, you should live a little."  Evelyn chimed in.

"I do live, can we drop the subject and enjoy our lunch."

"Fine but this is far from over." Said Ella this time.

When lunch was over she went to the Madam,

"You did well Aurora."

"Thank you, Madam."

"Here Aurora." The Madam called out to her.

Aurora went up to her and took the sheet,

"These are your new duties, what you need to prepare, you will be in charge of that room, and I expect no less from you."

"Yes madam."

"When slots open up in the palace I will make sure you get in the servants living quarters in the palace, as of current the slots are all full but I will keep you at the top of the list. This is a very huge duty and I can't be let down."

"I understand madam and you have no reason to be concerned at all."

"That's what I like to hear. And remember Aurora women who serve the palace aren't allowed to be in affairs with any men. You belong to the palace."

"Yes Madam, I understand."

"A pity honestly Aurora, such beauty going to waste but you have to sacrifice in order to live."

Aurora nodded, "I am fully committed to serving the palace."

"You are dismissed then, and make sure to study that and know it from the back of your head."

"Yes, Madam, and thank you."

"You may leave."

With that Aurora was happy, she clutched the paper on her chest, her luck was finally turning it would be such a joy if she got the chance to live in the servant's quarters.

Then she would not need to be away from her friends, and it meant she could also bath with hot water.

She felt bad that she was overjoyed as one of her mates was laying ill and fighting for her life. She would not have to sweep endlessly every day and scrub the courts.

She twirled around, she thanked the heavens for opening up and for her to be the one chosen for this position.

“I want this journey to not end if only we could keep going until we have explored everything.”“That would take a lifetime and even a lifetime is not possible to explore every area.”“That is the whole point Caspian, for this journey to never end.”“I did not think of it that way.”“I have always wanted to go to different places from where I was raised, even our journey back to the palace was a thrill for me as I had not been anywhere besides where I grew up.”“Do you believe that your father might be on the lookout for you?”“No, not all he has never acknowledged my existence and he is not about to start now. If was searching for it would be to execute me as he would have figured out that I helped you escape. I’m probably labelled a disgrace and a traitor.”“I’m sorry that you did this all to help me.”“It wasn’t to only help you Caspian, it was a way out for me, to have the freedom I have always craved and to be away. I was desperate that I would have gone anywhere but stay there,

Evening came and Caspian lay on his bed, but sleep alluded him. He could not find a sweet spot on the bed. He kept on turning but he was not finding a comfortable position. He was not finding it, he got up and got dressed. He went outside and he went back to the forest path that he walked with Aurora. The moon was full tonight and it cast soft light, the breeze was warm, how he would love to walk with Aurora during this moment, he wanted to share it with her.He remembered her words, as long as they were under the same moon they would find their way back to each other. He stood in the middle of the forest, he would never forget the moment when he had turned and saw Aurora walking down to him.Caspian came to realization that he knew where Aurora might be, why had he not thought of it earlier. He went raced back to his chambers and he took out a scroll, he was going to leave soon to go find her.He prayed that she would be where he thought she was. The next morning Caspian summoned Dou

Caspian waited for Douglas to come with Aurora’s friends, he could not go himself as that would raise a lot of speculation. It might also reach his mother and Nadia’s ear, he heard the door open as Douglas led them in, when they saw him they all seemed to be frightened.“You may leave,” Caspian said to Douglas as he went out.“You all don’t have to be anxious, I did not call you all to berate nor to punish you. I wanted to ask about Aurora, and you all don’t have to keep your heads down, you may look at me.”He could see them lift their heads, and their hands were clasped in front of them,“I wanted to ask if you knew where Aurora might be?”They all shook their heads in unison,“Do you have any idea where she could have gone to?”“No, My Lord, before she left, she was ordered to not speak nor see us.”“Who ordered you to do so?”They all were silent at his question and he knew that they were probably afraid if word got out they would get punished.“You do not have to fear anything,”

Caspian turned and Nadia stood there, “I thought you had retired to your chambers.”“I was waiting for you.”“Is there something worrying you?”“I have been meaning to have a chat about a few things on my mind,” Nadia replied.“Of course.”“Can we do this at your chambers?”“I would rather we go to your chambers.”Nadia seemed to be overjoyed with his suggestion, “I will lead the way then.”They walked in her chambers and he saw that it was different but he really would not know as he spent most of the time at his chambers or at Aurora’s.He sat by the table, and she sat too, “I know we haven’t had much time to ourselves as you have urgent matters to attend to as the king but I was hoping we could bond again.”Caspian was too tired for all this, why could they not discuss it in the morning?“How so?”“We can select activities that we love and we share them with each other,” Nadia replied.“That’s a sound plan.”“Do you have any suggestions?” Caspian could see that she was hopeful, did

Nadia’s parents arrived, and he, Nadia and his mother stood in the forefront as they were being welcomed.“Caspian, we never thought we would see you again.” Nadia’s father held him at arms-length.“It is wonderful to see you again Sir.”“No need for formalities, you are my son and I will make your father proud.”Nadia’s mother came up to him and smiled, “Thank you coming back to Nadia, we do not know what would have happened if you would have not been able to return.”“Thank you, I see who Nadia takes after.”Greetings were exchanged and they all made it to the dining area that was prepared, and mead was served as everyone got comfortable.“Before we all have a drink, I would love to raise a toast to my son Caspian who was given back to us and the time when he was most needed. A toast to Caspian.”They all raised their glasses after Nadia’s father’s speech, “Cheers.”The night set off, and there was so much chatter, the room was full of guests yet he felt alone, sad and the mead was
