NINE MONTHS AGO (Flashback—9 years earlier)

“Kalix, bro!” Justin greeted me with a wide grin, “You came! I thought you’d ditch me, you fucker!”

I chuckled. “You literally called my wife to drag me here, and now you’re surprised? Idiot.”

He laughed. “Of course. You only ever listen to your wife anyway. Where is she? I told her to come—it’s my party, after all.”

I shrugged. “She’s working overtime. I can’t stay too long, I need to pick her up later. She’ll call me.”

“Ohhh, I see. Fair enough. Come on—Migs and Allan are over there. Guess what?”

I raised a brow.

“Allan knocked up his secretary.”

I froze. “He fucking what?!”

“You heard me. He’s over there, drunk as hell.” Justin pointed toward the exit, where Allan sat slouched with Migs. “Dumb bastard. Can you believe it? Sofia’s gorgeous—total package—and he still cheated on her?”

I shook my head and walked with him toward the two. Justin let go of my shoulder to call them over.

“Kalix! You came, fucker!” Migs slurred.

I walked straight

“Samantha Zyle, please eat this. You haven’t eaten anything for the past three days.”I heard him—I did. But I didn’t care. My arms felt weak, my heart felt like it was being wrung dry, and it was hard to breathe.“Baby, please. I know it’s very hard for you, but—”I looked at him. “No, Kalix. You don’t know. You don’t have the slightest idea how fucking hard and heartbreaking this is for me. So don’t stand there and pretend you understand how I feel.” I didn’t care what spilled from my mouth. He said nothing, only stared at me. His expression hardened for a second, then his eyes dimmed. I quickly looked away.“Okay. I’m sorry. I forgot—you’re their mother. I’m sorry.” His voice was low. He set the tray down in front of me and straightened up. “I’ll leave it here. If you’re hungry, you can eat. If you want it heated, just call me. I’ll be outside.” With that, he walked out of the room.I glanced at the tray: fried rice, tocino with tomatoes, scrambled eggs, cucumber shake, and a bar o

What’s that?Wait—why is it so loud? It sounds like… a machine?I slowly opened my eyes, and they adjusted on their own to the brightness.A white ceiling greeted me. From the side, I could hear the steady beeping of a hospital monitor. My whole body ached, and the room seemed to spin like an earthquake was shaking through me. Where am I?What happened, and why am I here? The last memory before I woke up felt like a river bursting free, rushing back in fragments.Something crushed my chest, stealing my breath for a second. Then I realized—something heavy was on my hand. I turned my head toward the right side of the room.It was Kalix, asleep while holding my hand.A moment later, he stirred. I thought he was going back to sleep, but no—he stood, checked my IV, then slumped back into the chair, burying his face in his hands like it was some tired routine.“You look so stupid right now,” I couldn’t stop myself from saying. He froze, then slowly looked at me. “You look like shit, Kalix.”

PAINFUL.I don’t know how to breathe, as I stare at the two of them.It feels like my chest is being squeezed because of what I’ve witnessed, and everyone there seems aware of it, smiling as if everything is okay. Why?Who is that woman? Why did she kiss Kalix?I was startled when someone suddenly touched my back and grabbed my arm.“Sweetheart, relax. Breathe,” Mrs. Cynthia’s words made me try to calm down. But no, the pain didn’t lessen; it felt like my heart was being crushed slowly. My feet moved on their own, and I quickly left the place. I kept my gaze on the floor, unable to meet anyone’s eyes. When I managed to get into the elevator, tears started streaming down my face. How could this happen? I didn’t even think something like this was possible.I quickly exited the elevator and left the building. My mind was in chaos, my heart breaking into pieces. Is Kalix playing with me? Why? Is it because I’m foolish and easy to deceive? Is it because I’m dumb, is that why—For some unkn

ShitMy head hurts, I’m sleepy, and it feels like I’m about to collapse any moment.“You know, you should sleep. Even a robot overheats, and you’re just a person who looks somewhat human.”“Damn it, you Dexter!”He chuckled and then grabbed the straw from his iced americano. We were currently at the park, our class was canceled at the last minute because our professor had an urgent appointment, and our next class was at five in the afternoon, even though it was only eleven.“Why don’t we hang out at Fatima? We could go hunting for boys, what do you think?”I frowned and looked at him, “Are you sure about that? You’re even better-looking than the guys there; they might end up hunting you instead.”I saw his expression change, “You know, your frappe isn’t finished yet. Maybe I should just pour it on you?”“No, thanks.”“Hmp, anyway,” he took out a small paper bag from his bag and handed it to me, “Here, I forgot to give this to you.”“Wow, you actually went through the trouble, you shou

“Wait, how did you manage this after coming from work?” I asked while cutting the steak that he apparently cooked himself.“I lied,” he immediately replied, “After you left, I came home and prepared everything.”“Just you?” He nodded. “How did you know I left—” I stopped when I realized how he knew, “What a clever drag queen.”“Yeah, I asked him to do it, don’t worry. I asked him to buy me some time so I could prepare everything.”“Wow,” was my only reply as I savored the steak. It felt familiar yet not quite, “This is delicious, Lix! So you’re really good at cooking,” I exclaimed, remembering the epic porridge he made.“I was just panicking when I made that awful porridge! I didn’t know it wasn’t on low heat!” he said with irritation, glaring at me and cutting his defenseless steak.“Oh, sorry, calm down!” I said with a laugh, “I know, you were just panicking.”“Ugh,”“Hahahahahaha!”I was completely stuffed.Lord, it’s so nice to live like this. I had three steaks, two bruschettas,
