Chapter 3

Autor: Simon Vale
For a moment, I seemed to forget how to breathe.

Toni gently closed her eyes. "Yeah. He's Walt's junior at the same university. Hugh always said his late sister was a bit of a controlling tyrant. She interfered with everything he wanted to do and constantly imposed her will on him. He said living under her thumb was suffocating."

Dakota was indignant all over again. As she continued trying to fix the bridal veil on Toni's head, she grumbled, "Then I'm glad she's not around to control him anymore! A sister like that would make anyone feel suffocated!"

The lump in my throat hardened into a rock. Tears welled in my eyes.

Our parents' divorce had been bitter and messy to the very end. They were arguing over custody of their children when they got into a car accident and died. Just like that, I was left alone with 10-year-old Hugh.

I was determined to make sure he got a proper education. I went to school during the day and worked at a restaurant at night until my palms were covered in calluses, all so I could earn enough money to pay for his schooling.

I worried that he might fall in with the wrong crowd, so I forbade him from associating with ne'er-do-wells and confiscated his vape and cigarettes.

I also worried that some puppy love might distract him from his studies. I would ride my bike on a huge detour just to stop at a distance and secretly watch the school entrance.

I thought I was protecting him. I thought he knew that.

But all along, he thought I was locking him in a cage.

Toni suddenly chuckled as if she'd remembered something amusing. "Hugh was crying like a big baby while we were driving here. I couldn't get him to calm down no matter what I tried! Now that I think about it... it's kinda wholesome."

I sneered. On the day Walt and I got our marriage license, Hugh had been nothing more than a stoic, unenthused witness. His eyes hadn't even gotten wet.

He'd even told Walt, "Sorry you have to marry her."

And now the bastard had sobbed his heart out over some "sister" he'd picked up from God knew where.

Dakota clapped her hands. "That's it, Toni. You're winning at life! Familial love, romantic love, and platonic love. You're the most loved woman in the entire world!"

Toni looked away with a bashful smile. She pulled out her phone and showed us her photo album. "Look! We took these photos on our trips over the years."

One showed the four of them posing in front of what looked like a mountain villa. Walt stood in the middle with his left arm around Toni and his right arm draped over Hugh's shoulder. Stephanie stood beside Toni, and all four of them grinned at the camera.

As Toni scrolled farther down, even more photos appeared: beaches, restaurants and cafés that had gone viral on social media, New Year's parties...

I noticed something else. All four of them had gone on every single trip. Not one of them ever seemed to miss an outing.

Then a photo of Toni lying in a hospital bed caught my eye.

I pointed at the calendar in the background. "W-When was that?"

Toni glanced at the photo, and her smile widened. "Oh, this? I had a fever and went to the hospital. It was really no big deal, but all three of them panicked. They came to visit me and even stayed with me for a few days!"

She chuckled, her voice as joyful and jaunty as a little girl recounting a sweet memory.

My heart sank the moment I realized what day it had been.

It was the day Walt and I lost our unborn baby.

The police quickly arrived and arrested Walt and Toni.In court, evidence proved the charges of attempted homicide, insurance fraud, and battery, sealing their fate.As soon as Walt's company learned of his arrest, it issued a public statement announcing his immediate dismissal and removal from the organization. In a single night, he lost the business and reputation he had worked so hard to build. Fame and fortune abandoned him, and public opinion swiftly turned against him.My divorce proceedings went smoothly, without a hitch. I recovered every asset that rightfully belonged to me, including those previously held under our joint ownership. I even reclaimed the property and assets Walt had been liquidating to fund his personal expenses. When my former in-laws learned the truth, they came to my door several times and tearfully apologized. They begged me to forgive their son and return to the family for the sake of the relationship we had supposedly shared over the years. As if th

Everyone was shocked!"What?" Toni shuddered. Panic flashed across her face, but she quickly masked it with an innocent expression as her eyes reddened. "What's that supposed to mean?"She was still trying to put on one last show, casting herself as the poor, unwitting victim who had no idea any of this was happening. She clearly hoped she could still salvage the situation.I sneered at her crappy acting and pulled out a thick stack of documents filled with information."I knew something was up on the day of the wedding. I told you I wouldn't be able to do your makeup because of my injury, but instead of hiring another makeup artist, you insisted that I attend. You planned this from the start!"Then you started gloating about how much Walt dotes on you and how grand the wedding was. Everything you said was meant to provoke me into showing up during the ceremony and ruining it."So I hired a private investigator to dig into your past. You knew who you were long before any of this

I was speechless.Hugh saw the shock on my face and decided to tell me the whole truth. "Mom and Dad had another daughter after you, Felicia. Her name was Toni. But she was sickly and prone to illness, and our family's finances at the time made it difficult to care for her."Once Mom and Dad realized how overwhelming her medical bills would be, they decided to give her up for adoption to a family in another state."But that family eventually gave up on her too. That was the kind of life Toni had to endure, shuffled from place to place and from one foster family to another until she finally ended up in a group home. Only then did she get the chance to complete her college education with the help of donations from generous strangers."Then she joined Walt's company as an intern. By sheer coincidence, Walt learned about her background and history and realized she was our long-lost sister."He wanted to take care of someone who was also your family, and he sympathized with everything

Walt suddenly roared, "That's enough!"I turned. What I saw broke my heart.Hugh stepped forward first and pointed an accusing finger at me. "Why do you insist on making things so difficult for everyone today?!"Toni's sick! There's a sympathetic reason behind all of this, but you're choosing to ignore the trouble she might be going through and make everything about you! You'd rather humiliate her just to get what you want!"Stephanie let go of Toni's hand and looked at me with disappointment. "What happened to you, Felicia? When did you become someone so bitter and twisted by jealousy and hate?"Neither my best friend nor my only family member was on my side when my wounds were laid bare before everyone. Neither of them stood up for me. Instead, they defended the woman who had caused all of this!"She's sympathetic?" I retorted. "I guess she must be! She has a whole crowd of people rushing to dote on her and defend her! She gets a little sick, and suddenly my husband, brother, a

Any and all celebratory commotion died instantly. All eyes turned toward me as intrigued whispers began to fill the air.Toni's smile froze. She composed herself as best she could and tried to regain control of the situation. "Um, Felicia, did you mistake my husband for someone else? Look, I invited you here as my makeup artist, not as a practical joker, right? Pretending someone else's husband is your own is a little too much!"I looked at her innocent, wounded expression and felt only cold, sneering contempt. I ignored her and turned my attention to the two people who should have been closest to me."Yeah, tell her. I'm sure my own brother and best friend can tell her exactly who I am," I said.Toni shuddered and stared at them in disbelief."What? B-But didn't you tell me your older sister was already dead, Hugh?" she cried, her voice shaking. "A-And you said I'm your one and only best friend, Stephanie!"Her questions dropped like a bomb in the room.Stephanie recovered firs

I had only known I was pregnant for a short while when I felt an unnatural movement in my womb. Helpful bystanders rushed me to the hospital while I mustered the strength to call Walt.I called him ten times in total. He never picked up. In the end, he switched off his phone entirely. I called Stephanie and Hugh next, but neither of them answered. When I arrived at the hospital, the doctor told me it was too late. They had to remove the stillborn child. My hand shook so badly that I could barely sign my name."Where's your family?" the nurse asked."They're on their way."It took them three days to finally show up together.I asked Walt why he hadn't answered, and all he said was, "I was busy.""Busy?! You were so busy that you had to keep your phone off for three days? How were your colleagues supposed to contact you?""Felicia, come on. He was locked in an intensive meeting about a classified project. Everyone's phones were confiscated for those three days," Stephanie argued
