He released her throat. She gasped in air as he started fucking her even harder, chasing his own pleasure.

"Wrong answer," he growled. "But I'll take it."

His other hand grabbed her breast, squeezing brutally. She tried to slap him away. He bit down on her shoulder instead, teeth breaking skin.

Novalee screamed again.

"Music," Dante groaned. "Your screams are fucking music."

He was close now. She could feel it in the way his rhythm broke, became erratic.

One last time, she tried to fight. Broug

They spent the better part of two hours moving floor to floor, a rhythm Corporal had built so many times it had stopped requiring conscious thought. The seventh floor's courier problem turned out to be a scheduling conflict, solved in six minutes once she asked the one question no one on the floor had thought to ask. Between the seventh and the ninth, the elevator slowed as it passed eight without either of them requesting it, the doors easing open on a room gone abruptly quiet before someone inside jabbed a button hard enough to cut them shut again. Vince didn't comment. Neither did she, out loud. The silence on the other side of those doors had a shape to it, and she'd learned a long time ago to remember the shape of a silence even when she couldn't yet name what caused it.The ninth floor, which handled the parts of the operation too sensitive to name even inside the building, needed nothing from her except her signature on three transfers, which she reviewed line by line before si

The elevator opened on the third floor first, where the real logistics business ran in earnest, rows of desks, phone headsets, the low constant hum of people who had no idea what happened nine floors above them and preferred it to stay that way. The air smelled like burnt coffee and toner, more ordinary than anything the higher floors ever bothered pretending at. A woman near the window caught Corporal's eye and gave a small nod, quick and businesslike, the kind reserved for someone whose title she knew and whose actual job she didn't. Corporal returned it and kept walking. The floor didn't need her attention today. It ran fine without it, which was the entire design. The Sixth floor was different. Fewer desks, more screens, the air colder than it needed to be for the people working it, kept that way for the equipment instead, carrying a faint metallic edge of overworked electronics. Three people worked here full-time, plus two more who came and went depending on what the week require

Triplicity called the building the Spine because that was what it was, structurally and otherwise. Ten floors of glass and reinforced concrete running straight up the center of territory that belonged to no single king, holding the whole arrangement upright the way an actual spine held up everything that depended on it staying vertical. Knock it out and the rest didn't just fall. It stopped working entirely, the message no longer able to travel from the brain to the limbs. From the street it read as a logistics company, mid-sized, unremarkable, the sort of building people walked past every day without giving it a second look. That was the point. The ground floor really did run freight schedules and warehouse contracts, real invoices for real trucks moving real cargo across a city that never asked too many questions about what filled half the containers. The other nine floors did something else, and the elevator required a code and a palm scan that most of the building's own logistics

They spent the next hour on the mechanics of it. Where the lines actually ran, block by block, street by street, in language precise enough that no one could later claim confusion as an excuse. Which routes crossed which territory and what tribute, if any, applied when they did. How disputes would be raised and by whom, and who would arbitrate when the three of them couldn't agree among themselves, which Corporal made clear from the outset would not be her, on principle, because a king who arbitrates her own disputes isn't really bound by any rules at all.Marcus asked more questions than the situation required, careful and specific, the questions of someone determined not to need his mother's answers again. Elena asked fewer and sharper ones, the kind that told Corporal she'd already run the numbers herself before walking in and was checking them against what she was being told rather than learning them for the first time.By the time the terms were set, the light through the reinfor

Elena Vasquez came in alone. No guards, no escort, no one at her back to catch her if the room turned on her. She walked like she'd already decided the room wasn't going to turn on her, and something in the set of her shoulders made it hard to argue with that. She was maybe thirty, tall enough that she didn't need the posture but kept it anyway, dark hair pulled back tight enough to mean business, brown eyes that took the room in without lingering on any one part of it longer than the rest. A scar along one forearm, pale and old, sat exposed under a rolled sleeve that she hadn't bothered to hide it under. Her eyes went to Maria first, lingered there a beat too long to be casual, then moved to Marcus, then to Corporal."Didn't realize Uptown negotiated by committee now," Elena said, dropping onto the pew across from Corporal without checking what she was sitting on. A fleck of old bird droppings sat inches from her hand and she either hadn't noticed or didn't care enough to move it. "Y

The Neutral Ground was a church, or had been, long before anyone currently breathing in Triplicity staked a claim to anything. The stained glass was long gone, replaced with reinforced panels that let in the same colored light without the vulnerability of actual glass. The pews hadn't gone anywhere. They sat in crooked rows under sheets gone gray with dust, half of them split down the middle where the wood had finally given up holding itself together. The altar staging at the front had rotted soft at the edges, the steps up to it no longer trusted to hold anyone's weight. Bird droppings streaked the walls under the high windows, and something larger than a bird moved in the rafters from time to time, unbothered by the meetings held below it. Behind the last pew, someone had built a nest of blankets and flattened cardboard into the corner, empty for now but recently enough that no one had cleared it out. No one bothered with most of the church at all. That was exactly why it worked. No
