RENZO

I wouldn't have stopped to look at her if her voice hadn't sounded surprisingly familiar. I turned around to face her, and my eyebrows furrowed slightly when I saw a mark I wouldn't mistake for anything in the world.

My fucking mark. Resting perfectly on her neck.

She slowly raised her head to look at me, and I felt a pang in my chest as I saw a pair of soft blue eyes staring up at me, tears sliding down her face as she looked at me.

She was the woman from the previous night, and I wondered what punishment awaited her.

“Who's this?” I turned to Ansel, who seemed to be quickly devising a scheme in his head. “And what is she doing here?”

“That's my mate, you asshole!” He glared at me, anger radiating from him. I would have had his head rolling at his feet for cursing at me if I hadn't been taken aback by his comment.

Alpha's mate?

The woman who was supposed to be serving me the previous night was the Alpha's mate? How the hell was that possible?

“What was her offense?” I couldn't help but ask the question that came to mind.

The question rolled off my tongue as I shifted my gaze back to the woman, who immediately lowered her eyes to the floor the moment our gazes met.

“She's a fucking whore who showed up at our wedding bearing another man's mark, okay? Now stop asking me stupid questions as if I'm supposed to share everything that's going on in my pack with you!” he snapped, resentment dripping from every word as I stared at the woman.

A sob broke free from her chest, and I felt a pang of guilt stabbing into me like shards of glass.

“It's my fault.” I sighed, bending down on one knee to look at the woman's face.

She turned her gaze away, forcing me to grab her chin between my thumb and index finger and raise her head to look at me.

“Why didn't you tell me you had a mate? And worst of all, the Alpha?”

Tears rolled down her delicate face as she stared deep into my eyes.

I had never felt a greater need to own up to my mistake than I did at that moment. She shouldn't have been going through this humiliation if I hadn't left my mark on her.

“How could I do that? You didn't even ask me before doing whatever you pleased,” she hissed, trying to turn her head away from me.

“Ansel?” I groaned. My ability to hold my rut back was already wearing thin, and I needed to get the fuck out of there as soon as possible.

“If she rejects you as her mate, that means she's free to carry another man's mark, right?” The question rolled off my tongue before I could make sense of what I was doing.

“What? Are you for real?” Ansel burst into laughter.

I rubbed circles on my chest, wondering what was so funny about what I'd said that would make an Alpha laugh.

“If you reject him, you're free to go about your life without facing any punishment. So do it now,” I whispered to the woman, who wouldn't even look at me.

“You can't come into my pack and question my orders, Your Majesty! This is my pack, and I won't let you insult me by changing my orders. Okay?” Ansel barked like the idiot he was.

If he knew why I was in his pack, he wouldn't be running his mouth.

“Then think of it as me letting you off the hook easily. Let her go, and I'll forget about you breaking the rules.” I stood up and turned to face Ansel properly.

“You can't threaten me. I didn't do shit!” he sneered.

I slowly shook my head, trying to keep my vision clear for a little while longer.

“Then, would you rather I let you off easily, or should I let everyone here know what a shitty Alpha you are by having my men drag you down from there and drive my dagger into your throat? Which would you prefer?” I growled, anger surging through me as I wondered why he couldn't see what I was sacrificing over such a trivial matter.

He took a baby step forward, not daring to move any closer to me.

“Why do you even care about her, anyway? Do you think you're special for standing up for a shameless whore?”

“Why do I care so much?” I chuckled, glaring at him as though I could drive daggers into his skull with my eyes alone. “It's just me taking responsibility for leaving a mark on her without her consent. Now don't you dare defy my orders. Let her go.”

I turned to the woman, about whom I knew absolutely nothing.

“Let her go? On whose authority? You can't say shit like that after claiming my mate.”

“It is my command, and I don't owe you any explanation.” I hissed before turning away from him. “Kyran, take the woman and bring her to the car.”

My shoulders shuddered as I walked out of the hall. My entire body grew weaker as I dragged my feet toward the parked car.

Just a little longer. I needed to hold it in a little longer until I got back to the brothel.

“Fuck! I need a woman to cool off my rut,” I gasped as I got into the car.

“Your Majesty?!” the driver exclaimed when he saw me sweating profusely. My eyes were barely open as I groaned.

“Take me back to the brothel.”

RENZO'S POV"Let him go!" my mother screamed, writhing in agony on the floor. "I beg of you. Just let go of my son, and I will do everything you want of me."My hand clenched into a tight fist as anger and pain consumed me. My brother—my half-brother—grabbed me by the neck, squeezing my throat until I began to see stars."Mo—mother," I gasped, stuttering as my beast of a brother tightened his grip around my neck.I shook my head, silently praying that my mother would stop crawling toward us. She had been stabbed severely, but she might survive her wounds if she left me behind and ran. Instead, she kept crawling closer, her body dragging through her own pool of blood."Give it to me, Nadia!" my father growled, watching me struggle against my brother's grip. He didn't seem to care whether they killed me or not. He didn't even bat an eye at my mother, who was losing so much blood.Whatever he believed my mother possessed, that was all he cared about. Nothing more."I... I don't have... i

VIOLET'S POV"You're still not leaving?" I asked, rising from the bed to stare at Kyran, the man who had been with me ever since we'd arrived at the Lycan Pack.He wouldn't tell me why he was staying. He simply stood by the window, gazing outside with his arms crossed behind his back."Not yet."He gave me the same two-word reply he'd been giving me every time I asked why he wouldn't leave.I appreciated him staying with me, but it felt strange, as though he were watching over me like a watchdog.I wouldn't run away if that was what he was worried about. But I doubted the man cared whether I stayed or left."Have you always been like this?" I asked, dragging my feet toward him until I was standing beside him, looking up at the night sky.It was already dark outside, and I wondered how long I would be confined to my room before someone finally came knocking."Like what?" Kyran mumbled without taking his eyes off the sky.I stood beside him and followed his gaze, hoping to see something

RENZO'S POV"His Majesty is here!" the guard announced, pushing open the double doors to announce my arrival.I glanced at my Beta from the corner of my eye, watching him fidget with his fingers. For some reason, he seemed nervous, and I hoped to the moon he had nothing to do with what had happened."It would pain me to have to kill you," I muttered to myself. After one last look at him, I nodded and drew in a sharp breath."Let's go in. It wouldn't be nice to keep the old men waiting."I smirked as I walked into the boardroom, my jaw clenched, my eyes burning with rage, and my shoulders tense.Whatever was ruining my reign was in that boardroom, waiting for me. Whoever was behind the string of failed missions we'd experienced so far was in that room. But how would I know who it was? Would they give themselves away through strange behavior or some suspicious expression?I had no idea."Greetings, Your Majesty the King," the elders greeted in unison.Everyone was already on their feet

RENZO'S POVDo you think she'll ever forgive you if you kill me? I know the look in your eyes. You're a lonely child, and you want to keep her. I could give her to you freely if you let me go."Bullshit!" A deep growl rumbled through my chest.Anger built inside me as I tightened my grip around my dagger, recalling my encounter with the werewolf girl's father. Those had been his last words before I drove my dagger into his neck and slit his throat. He was such an idiot to think he could guilt-trip me into letting him go. Not after he'd interfered in my business.I have no desire to seek her forgiveness. I'm doing her a favor by removing a pest like you from her life."Fucking bastard!" I spat, staring at the dagger in my hand as though the sight of it would ease my pain and rage.I hadn't done anything wrong. I'd done what needed to be done. She didn't deserve what he had put her through. He hadn't had her best interests at heart. He'd only been using her for his own selfish gain.No

VIOLET'S POVYou're going to be safe... with me.The Lycan King's words kept replaying in my head as he carried me out of the dungeon in his arms. The walls of the hallway were splattered with blood, and the floor was littered with the bodies of men I assumed were the guards stationed at the dungeon.I shut my eyes, refusing to believe that the dead bodies scattered across the hallway were the price of my freedom. They were the sacrifice King Renzo Hades had made to get me out of the dungeon. How pathetic. How pathetic of me to think I could lead a simple life for the rest of my days. The men who had been sacrificed for my escape would haunt me forever. They never deserved such a fate."Don't blame yourself for their deaths. You shouldn't think you're responsible for what happened to them, either. They were going to die anyway, and I was the one who made their deaths quick. Not you." King Renzo whispered into my ear as he carried me down the hallway. "You have nothing to do with this.

VIOLET'S POV"Thank you," I whispered, unable to stop myself from staring at the Lycan King as he freed me from the shackles that bound me to the chair. My hands hurt so much the moment they were free. For a minute, they didn't even feel like mine. They felt heavy, and pain spread through my body as I winced."Good to see you're still in one piece," the Lycan King, whose name remained a mystery to me, blurted out. His eyes were fixed on my neck as he mumbled something I couldn't make out."I believe you are." I bit down on my bottom lip as warmth spread through my neck, embarrassment creeping into my cheeks.I couldn't help feeling like a fool for making him come to my rescue after he'd warned me against returning to my people. I'd overestimated the loyalty of my own species, believing I would be safer here than if I'd gone with the Lycans."Where's Ansel?" I asked, suddenly feeling uneasy about how easily the Lycan King had reached me, even though there must have been hundreds of gua
