Chapter 2

Author: September
I looked down at Molly's hand on my wrist.

"Compensation for what?"

Molly tightened her grip.

"You entered a private meeting area in Silver Ridge without a verified pack identity. You wore a bracelet that looks like a royal heirloom, and you came here to get close to our Alpha. Under pack security rules, you owe an identity review fee and security compensation before you leave."

I looked past her, straight at Adrian.

"Alpha Vale, is this your rule?"

Adrian's expression shifted.

"Molly's wording is harsh, but Silver Ridge has had problems with outsiders before. Some women have faked bloodlines and used private meetings to gain access to pack resources."

"So your solution is to let your childhood friend accuse an invited guest of fraud and charge her for it?"

"If you have nothing to hide, the review will clear your name."

Molly smiled.

"Exactly. Pay the fee, register your pack, and wait until we confirm who you are. Then you can go."

I pulled my wrist free.

"I was invited here. I did not cross your border in secret, and I did not ask for access to your pack records, your treasury, or your Luna seat. I came to a formal meeting that Adrian Vale agreed to attend."

Molly's smile faded.

"A woman with no escort, no formal notice, and no named pack does not walk into Silver Ridge wearing something that looks like a royal bracelet unless she wants people to assume she is important."

The moonstone bracelet sat cool against my skin. Molly saw only a pretty object and thought it was part of an act.

"I am leaving," I said.

I picked up my bag and stepped around her.

Molly raised her voice before I reached the door.

"Guards."

Several Silver Ridge guards entered and took their places near the exit. They carried gray review bands at their belts, the kind used for unidentified border wolves, but they did not reach for them yet.

Molly folded her arms.

"She stays until the review is complete."

I looked at Adrian.

"You are detaining me inside your lodge."

"No one is detaining you," Adrian said. "We are asking you to cooperate with a security procedure."

"A procedure invented after I refused to let Molly insult me."

Molly stepped closer.

"My father oversees lodge access and visitor records. I know the rules better than an outsider who will not even name her pack."

"Then bring your father here. Or bring the Council liaison assigned to Silver Ridge. If this is a real security matter, handle it through a real channel."

Her eyes narrowed.

"You think you can demand Council involvement?"

"I think you should stop pretending personal jealousy is pack security."

Molly's face flushed.

Adrian moved to stand beside her.

"Isabella, you are escalating this for no reason. Molly is protective of Silver Ridge and of me. Her approach may be emotional, but her concern is not unreasonable."

"She called me a fake Luna climber, accused me of chasing your title, implied I used other Alphas for money, and now she wants twenty thousand dollars before I am allowed to leave. Which part of that sounds reasonable to you?"

Adrian did not answer quickly enough.

Molly seized the silence.

"Twenty thousand is not much for someone wearing luxury brands from head to toe. Unless those things are not real."

"I can pay twenty thousand."

"Then pay it."

"I will not pay for your insult."

The room went quiet.

Molly looked as if I had slapped her.

"You arrogant little liar."

Adrian's voice turned colder.

"That is enough from both of you."

"No," I said, looking at him. "It was enough the moment she walked in. You should have ended it then."

His expression darkened.

"Silver Ridge may not be a royal pack, but I received you with respect."

"You let her question my bloodline in your dining room. You let her block the door. You let your guards stand between me and the exit. If this is your idea of respect, then Silver Ridge and I have nothing else to discuss."

Molly's anger sharpened.

"Do you know how many women would fight for a chance to become Luna of Silver Ridge?"

"I am not one of them. I have no interest in your Alpha, and I have no interest in his Luna position. I came because my father asked me to give this meeting a chance. That chance is over."

For the first time, Adrian looked truly offended.

"Your father asked you to give Silver Ridge a chance?" he repeated. "Who exactly do you think you are?"

I looked at him, then decided he did not deserve the answer yet.

"I am someone who has no reason to stay in this room any longer."

I stepped forward.

Molly flicked her gaze toward the guards. Two of them closed the gap at the door. A third guard reached from the side and caught my arm.

His fingers locked around my sleeve and skin.

I looked at Adrian for a moment longer."There is nothing to begin again," I said. His face tightened."I did not know who you were.""That was the point."He fell silent."You should not have needed my name to treat me with respect. You should not have needed a royal crest to stop Molly from touching my bracelet. You should not have needed Royal Guards in the room before you remembered you were an Alpha."Cassian unlocked the gray outsider tag from my wrist and sealed it with the broken bracelet, the watch, and the ring. The insult would leave Silver Ridge as evidence, not trash."Remove the evidence," Cassian ordered. "Escort Garrick Veyne and Molly Veyne to separate holding rooms. No Silver Ridge official speaks to them without Royal authorization."Molly tried to rise."You cannot do this."Cassian did not look at her."You detained a princess, damaged royal property, and admitted to abusing visitor records. We can."Before I left, Adrian tried once more."Princess Isabella, Silver

The Royal Guards returned with sealed record boxes and two confiscated tablets from the lodge office.Garrick saw them and seemed to age in a single breath.Molly understood a moment later. The bracelet had been expensive, but the records could destroy everything her family had built inside Silver Ridge.Garrick lowered his head again."Princess Isabella, my daughter had no formal authority to detain you. She abused access that belonged to my office. The Veyne family will compensate every loss and surrender control of visitor records until the Royal review is complete."Molly stared at him."You are giving them our records?""You already did," Garrick said through his teeth. Her face crumpled. She turned to me and dropped to her knees, but she stopped short of touching my dress."Princess Isabella, please. I was angry. I thought you were lying. I will apologize in front of the whole pack. I will remove the tag myself. I will pay whatever I can. Just do not let the Council open those re

Molly stared at her father on his knees. The fear on his face seemed to offend her more than the Royal Guards in the room."Why are you bowing to her?" she demanded. "She came here with no records and no guards. You always said outsiders had to obey Veyne procedure inside Silver Ridge."Garrick's head snapped up."Molly, stop."But she was too angry to listen."You said the visitor logs mattered more than anyone's story. You said if someone was not in our records, they could not prove what happened here."The room went quiet.Garrick went still.Molly did not notice the change."We have handled outsiders before. Rogues, women from small packs, wolves who came here complaining about fees. You said once the record was corrected, no one could prove they were ever mistreated.""Molly."Garrick's voice dropped into a warning. She finally looked at him."What? That is what you taught me. Silver Ridge runs because people like us keep the records clean."Cassian turned to one of the Royal Guar

"Who threatened my daughter?"Garrick Veyne's voice filled the room.Molly ran to him at once."Dad, they are trying to ruin me. I followed security procedure because she would not verify her pack, and now she claims I owe sixteen million dollars for a bracelet. They brought Royal Guards to threaten us."Garrick looked at me, then at the sealed evidence on the table."This is a Silver Ridge security matter," he said. "Visitor records and lodge access fall under my office. If my daughter conducted a review, she acted under local authority."Cassian stepped forward before he could come closer."Take another step, and this becomes an attack on the royal household."The enforcers behind Garrick shifted, but the Royal Guards moved first. Within seconds, every Silver Ridge wolf near the door had been restrained.Garrick froze. Then he noticed Cassian's uniform and the silver wolf insignia on his shoulder."Commander Thorne."Cassian did not respond.Garrick forced his voice lower."There mus

Adrian went still. For a moment, he only looked at me, trying to process what I had just said."If Molly acted because of you," I said, "then you can carry the consequence for her."Molly's fingers tightened around his sleeve.Adrian's expression changed at once."Princess Isabella, a payment of that size cannot be promised in the middle of a confrontation. Silver Ridge would need a formal review, pack approval, and time to assess the damage."I smiled faintly."So when Molly needed mercy, she acted for you. Now that payment is due, Silver Ridge needs a review."His jaw tightened."That is not what I meant.""It is exactly what you meant."Cassian stood beside the table, silent but watching. The broken bracelet, the watch, and the ring remained in front of Molly like evidence she could no longer explain away.I looked at Adrian."You have two choices. If Molly acted under Silver Ridge security authority, then Silver Ridge accepts responsibility for unlawful detention, misuse of pack pr

Eight million dollars. The number froze the room.Molly recovered first."That is impossible," she said. "It is a bracelet. You cannot name any price you want because you are angry."Cassian looked at her."The bracelet is recorded in the royal archive as the late Queen Luna's moonstone heirloom. It was altered for Princess Isabella on her coming of age and marked with the Draven crest inside the setting."Molly's lips parted."Eight million is a conservative estimate," Cassian said. "Its true value is not only in the stones or the metal."Molly looked at the cracked moonstone in my hand."I did not know. She came here with no guards, no notice, no proof. Anyone would have thought she was lying.""You were told," I said."You saying it does not count as proof.""I warned you not to touch it. I told you to wait ten minutes. I told you who I was."She had no answer.Cassian signaled to a Royal Guard. The guard collected my watch and ring from the table and placed them beside the broken b
