Chapter 3

作者: Bean
"Damon, see? Even Lily says it's fine." Yvonne tugged at his arm, her voice dripping with coaxing sweetness. "I'll just go in for one quick cuddle, take a picture, and come right out. No one's even going to notice."

Damon hesitated. He'd heard the rumors too—how fiercely the Blackwood Pack guarded their pups.

"Yvonne, maybe we should just drop it. If they catch you—"

"Oh, come on. Since when did you get so scared?" She pouted, her eyes already glistening. "He's just so adorable. And you know Lily's always looked down on me. If I can't even hold a little wolf cub, she won't say it out loud, but she'll be laughing at me on the inside."

She leaned in closer, dropping her voice to a conspiratorial whisper. "Besides, we're meeting the Frost Alpha next month. A photo of me with a Blackwood pureblood cub? That's going to open doors for you."

And there it was—the waterworks. Her eyes spilled over, and Damon crumbled on the spot.

In his mind, Yvonne was delicate. A sweet little omega, useful but fragile. And as the Alpha, it was his job to protect her.

"Alright, alright. Stop crying. I'll figure something out."

He scanned the area, then walked over to the guard posted at the nursery tent entrance.

"Hey, man—someone's looking for you over there. Said something about an issue at the altar." Damon pointed toward the bonfire. "Sounded urgent."

The guard's face tightened. He exchanged a quick word with his partner, then took off at a jog toward the ceremony grounds. Before leaving, he threw a parting request over his shoulder: keep an eye on the tent. Don't let anyone near it.

That brief window was all Damon needed. He shot Yvonne a smug look and jerked his chin toward the tent flap.

"Go. Now."

I stood there, rooted to the spot, and watched Yvonne slip through the entrance just like she had in my last life.

Only then did I let out the breath I'd been holding.

Finally.

Some people were born to dig their own graves. And no one—not even fate—could stop them.

Inside the tent, the pup was curled up in its bassinet, fast asleep.

Yvonne tiptoed closer, her eyes locked onto that shimmering silver-gray bundle of fur. She was practically vibrating with excitement.

"God, you're gorgeous. One picture of this on my feed, and everyone's going to be so jealous."

She reached down with both hands, lifted the pup right out of its swaddle, and cradled it against her chest.

The second her fingers touched that fur, the pup's eyes snapped open.

Golden. Wild. Terrified.

"Yelp! Yelp! Yelp!"

That sharp, piercing cry cut through the night like a blade. It echoed across the entire camp.

Damon's face went white. "What the hell—"

And then it came. A deafening, earth-shaking roar from deep in the mountains behind the camp.

The mother. She'd sensed it. Felt the taint of an outsider on her pup.

"THE CUB!"

"SOMEONE'S IN THE NURSERY TENT!"

Footsteps thundered from every direction. The Blackwood Pack elder—his face drained of all color—was sprinting toward the tent with a pack of warriors at his heels, eyes blazing with murderous fury.

Inside, Yvonne was frozen. The pup's cries had rattled her, and she scrambled to put him back—but his tiny claws had already raked across her hand. Blood welled up from the scratches.

"DAMON! HELP! HE BIT ME!" she shrieked.

Damon panicked. He kicked the tent flap aside and lunged inside.

The elder and his warriors reached the entrance at the same time.

The flap was ripped open by a massive, clawed hand.

And there stood the elder—his eyes bloodshot, veins bulging in his temples—staring at the scene before him.

Yvonne, clutching the wailing pureblood pup. Her hands slick with red.

"You. Will. Die."

Damon Cross had lost his mind. That was the news Julian brought me half a month later."After they dragged him off, he spent every day raving like a lunatic—mumbling about wolves, screaming that Lily was coming back. The Cross family has been completely cast out by the entire wolf nation. They're finished. Damon's been committed to a psychiatric hospital. He's not coming back."Julian peeled an orange as he spoke, his tone as casual as if he were discussing the weather."And Yvonne?" I took a slice he offered, the sweet-tart juice bursting across my tongue."Yvonne's story is worse." A cold smile tugged at Julian's lips. "Once the Cross family fell apart, Damon's mother turned all her rage on her. Beat her. Cursed her. Every single day. Yvonne's crippled hand got infected—she had no money for treatment, and the wound festered. So she tried to poison the old woman and run off with whatever cash she could grab."I paused mid-bite."Did the mother die?""Not dead. But she's a vegetable no

At the main gate of the estate.Damon stood there in a filthy suit—its original color long since unrecognizable—hair matted, face crisscrossed with fresh and healing wounds. He looked like a homeless beggar who'd crawled out of a gutter."Halt! No entry without authorization!"The guard at the gate squared his chest, the cold metallic click of his rifle cutting through the air as he blocked Damon's path."Brother, I'm here to see Lily! I'm her fated mate—my name is Damon Cross!""I have urgent business with her. Please, just go tell her Damon's waiting outside. I'm begging you!"The guard's face remained stone-cold. "There's no one named Lily here. Leave now, or I'll have you detained for trespassing on restricted grounds.""That's impossible! Her father is Jackson Frost—how could she not be here?!" Damon screamed, his voice cracking with desperation.Right then, a sleek black Rolls-Royce Phantom rolled slowly out through the gates. The window glided down, revealing my face. Beside me,

The room fell into dead silence, broken only by the soft rustle of wind through the plane trees outside the window.I looked at Julian, and the tears finally broke free. All the pain, the despair from my past life—they all found their safe harbor in this moment."Julian, it's me. I'm back." I sobbed, throwing myself into his arms."Lily, I'm sorry. In that last life, I was too late—too slow to tell you how I felt. That's how Damon got his claws into you." Julian held me tight, his voice cracking, pressing kiss after kiss to the crown of my head. "Not this time. I'm not letting go. Anyone who dares to lay a finger on you? I'll burn their entire bloodline to the ground."We talked until the sky started to pale.He told me he'd woken up on the seventh day after my death. And the first thing he did in this new life? Find a way to get me back."The Cross family's invitation to the Blackwood Gala? I let that slip through on purpose." Julian's eyes went cold, a sharp glint cutting through the

When I finally stepped through the gates of my own home—past the rows of red-brick houses, breathing in the familiar floral scent that hung in the air—I finally let myself believe it. I was really back. Really alive. In my last life, I'd moved out for the sake of that so-called love. Damon's family never accepted me, so he'd stuck me in some cheap rental apartment on the outskirts of town. I'd bent over backward for him, given up everything, and what did I get in return?Three days and three nights in that dungeon. He'd whipped me until I passed out, doused me with cold water to wake me up, and started all over again. Over and over until he got tired. I'd almost died in that room. But the will to survive had clawed its way out of me. While Damon rested, I'd dug through that wall with my bare hands. I was so close. I could almost taste freedom. Then that night, he had me thrown into the No-Man's-Land wolf pit instead. After three days of torture, I had nothing left. No strength. No figh

Just as the Blackwood warriors dragged Yvonne onto the altar, ready to carry out the sentence, a deafening roar tore through the night from beyond the camp's perimeter.Blinding floodlights flooded the entire grounds, turning darkness into daylight in an instant. A dozen armored vehicles smashed through the wooden barricades, rolling straight up to the altar. The doors swung open in unison, and squad after squad of guards poured out—fully automatic rifles raised, surrounding the Blackwood Pack's sacred ground in a matter of seconds.Every eye in the camp locked onto the center vehicle. Its reinforced door clicked open.A man in a crisp military uniform stepped out. Broad-shouldered. Commanding. Every step he took carried the heavy, undeniable presence of a high-ranking Alpha. That was my father. Alpha of the Frost Pack. Jackson Frost. In my past life, I'd hidden my family background to protect Damon's fragile ego. And he'd repaid that kindness by locking me in a dungeon, torturing me f

Yvonne hit the ground so hard the impact knocked the air out of her. She sat there, trembling, her perfect little face streaked with tears and smeared mascara. The elder checked the pup first. Once he was satisfied the cub was unharmed, his gaze shifted to Yvonne's bloodied right hand—the scratches still oozing red."Elder, this is a misunderstanding!" Damon stepped forward instinctively, shielding Yvonne with his body. "She just thought the pup was cute. She wanted a photo. There was no malice, I swear!""No malice?" The guard who'd been tricked came storming back, his face twisted with rage. "I trusted you to watch the tent, and you let this she-wolf sneak in to defile our future Alpha? You outsiders are nothing but mongrels!""I didn't! I swear I didn't!" Yvonne sobbed, her carefully done makeup now a complete mess. She looked pathetic. Wrecked. Then something clicked behind her eyes. She whipped her head around, staring straight at me standing outside the tent, and screamed like I
