LOGINTobias's POVEvery muscle in my body locks, and beside me Lincoln jerks upright at exactly the same moment, his half-finished coffee forgotten in his hand.“What the fuck?” he breathes, his eyes snapping to mine.I don't answer because he already knows. The anxiety we've been feeling from Zahra all night changes so violently there can be no mistaking it. This isn't worry about Max anymore. It isn't frustration, impatience or fear of what might happen. This is panic, sharp, sudden and fucking real.Thor surges forward so hard that my vision flickers, and a growl tears from Lincoln's chest beside me as Lex reacts to exactly the same thing.“She's in trouble,” Lincoln says, his voice suddenly hard.“I know.”My phone is in my hand before the words are properly out of my mouth. I call Zahra and press it straight to my ear, listening as it rings with no answer.“Come on,” I mutter, ending the call and immediately trying again. “Come on, angel. Fucking answer me.”Still nothing.“I'm callin
Tobias's POVI put the food in the back, keep one coffee for myself and check my phone again.Nothing.My jaw tightens as I look towards the road.‘She's still safe,’ Thor reminds me.‘I know.’‘Then stop staring at the road as if you can make her appear.’‘Don't act like you wouldn't run straight back there and carry her out yourself if I let you have control right now.’Thor just huffs in the back of my mind rather than dignifying that with a proper response.I take a drink of coffee, trying to keep calm. Why haven't they left yet? I can't feel her getting any farther away through the bond. Her location feels roughly the same as before, and it's beginning to worry me even more than I already fucking was.Lincoln returns a couple of minutes later, and the look he gives my phone tells me he's noticed the same silence I have.“Still nothing?” he asks quietly, keeping his voice low with so many of his pack moving around us.“No.”His eyes drift towards the road, his expression tightenin
Tobias's POVWe head towards the food court with everyone else, keeping enough distance between us that nobody looking our way would see anything more than the Crown Prince walking beside Shadow's Alpha. After twelve miles sitting alone together in the car, where touching him had already started to feel natural, having to remember that nobody knows about us is fucking strange. Lincoln isn't ready for his pack to know yet, though, and after everything he's already asked them to accept tonight, I'm not about to take that choice away from him.The mundane normality of the place feels fucking bizarre. Bright signs advertise burgers, fried chicken, coffee and sandwiches as though there aren't armed warriors positioned outside every entrance. Music plays quietly through speakers in the ceiling, almost drowned out by the voices of Shadow wolves moving through as quickly as possible, and the smell of chips, coffee and grilled meat hangs heavily in the air.Nobody is treating this like a prope
Tobias's POVI move around the front of the car and stop beside him. “They're safe,” I say quietly. His eyes stay on the family. “For now.”“Because of you.”That gets his attention.“Don't.” he says shaking his head“Don't what?” I ask, turning towards him,“Don’t Try to make this into something it's not.”My eyebrows pull together. “And what exactly do you think it is?”Lincoln looks across the forecourt. More cars are arriving every few seconds now, doors opening almost as quickly as engines shut off, people stretching cramped legs before getting on with whatever they need to do. An older man grips his son's forearm as he eases himself carefully out of a low car, his knees obviously stiff after the drive. A teenage girl struggles past with a duffel bag over one shoulder and a folded blanket tucked beneath her arm. Near the pumps, a woman opens an overpacked boot and catches a framed photograph just before it slides out with the bags piled around it. She presses it against her chest
Tobias's POVI keep hold of Zahra's presence for another few seconds anyway, letting the steady awareness that she's there settle some of the pressure in my chest before I force myself to concentrate on the warrior waving us towards an empty space. I triple-check my fuel gauge. It's still reading as full. I should be able to make it most of the way to Daemon's borders without needing to stop, especially at the easy speed we've been travelling at.I pull in and switch off the engine. For the first time since leaving Shadow, the vibration beneath my feet disappears, and the sudden silence inside the car feels wrong. Engines continue rumbling outside as the rest of our section pulls in around us, doors opening and closing, voices carrying across the forecourt, but inside the car there's suddenly nothing to distract me from the fact that my mate is miles behind us.Lincoln reaches for his door.“Wait.”He pauses and looks at me as I pull my phone from the holder.Nothing.No message from
Tobias's POVMy earpiece crackles as we approach the rest stop, Commander Henry's voice cutting through the quiet inside the car as he runs through the instructions again. We're divided into sections, each led by one of Linc's unit, so we're not trying to cram eight hundred people into the same fucking place at once. The warriors have already moved ahead and locked down a truck stop with a food court, toilets and enough pumps to refuel several vehicles at a time. Each section is to pull in, refuel whatever vehicles need it, grab food to go, take a bathroom break, swap drivers where needed and then get the fuck out again so the next group can move through. Once we're done, we're to rendezvous at the natural park farther up the road and wait there for the rest of the convoy to regroup before we continue.Commander Henry hopes we can be back on the road in no more than an hour. I suspect it'll be more like two. Moving eight hundred people anywhere quickly is apparently fucking impossible
