The lullaby continued long after the neighborhood's last light went out.

Rei stood on the porch, staring at the black sky, and felt something inside her recognize the melody. It was the same tune she had sung to Hope, the same one Mara had hummed while cooking dinner, the same one Dominic had attempted to sing to their children despite never remembering the words correctly.

But the voice above them was not singing to comfort a child.

It was calling one home.

Behind Rei, Ava began to cry.

  • Marked by the Alpha Captain   The Sound of Coming Home

The morning started with a phone call from the neonatal unit.Lela was awake, sitting against her pillows while Jack sorted through the growing collection of baby clothes on the chair. He had somehow turned two tiny outfits, three blankets, and a package of newborn socks into an organizational project. His phone rang.He glanced at the screen.“It's the unit.”Lela immediately straightened.“Answer it.”Jack accepted the call and put it on speaker.“Good morning. This is Jack Sullivan.”“Good morning, Mr. Sullivan. It's Nurse Melissa from the neonatal unit. I wanted to give you both an update before you came down.”Lela reached for Jack's hand.“Is everything okay?” he asked.“Yes. Both girls had a stable night. I have some encouraging news about Sophia, and Isabella has also made progress.”Lela closed her eyes briefly.“Okay. Tell us.”“Sophia managed her feeding attempts a little better overnight. She's still tiring, but she's showing more consistency. Her temperature has also rema

  • Marked by the Alpha Captain   The Daughter Before the Beginning

Chapter 98Rei couldn't move. The little girl stood in the doorway, smiling as though they were meeting at a family gathering instead of inside a room that looked like a laboratory. She had dark hair.Silver eyes. And Rei's face. But there was something about her smile that made Rei uneasy. It was too knowing.Too old."Who are you?" Rei asked again. The little girl tilted her head."I already told you.""You said you're the daughter I was supposed to have.""Yes.""That doesn't tell me who you are."The girl sighed."You're always asking questions."Rei looked toward the little boy standing beside the door.He hadn't moved. His scarred knuckles were pressed against his sides, and his gray eyes kept shifting between Rei and the girl."Do you know her?" Rei asked him.The boy nodded."She's been here longer than I have.""How long?"He shrugged."Before.""Before what?""Before everything."The little girl laughed."He doesn't remember much."The boy frowned."I remember leaving."The

  • Marked by the Alpha Captain   The Rei Who Chose Wrong

Chapter 97Nobody moved. The woman standing at the edge of the opening looked exactly like Rei.The same dark hair. The same face. The same familiar shape of her mouth. But a scar ran from her cheekbone toward her jaw, and her eyes were Dominic's gray. She looked older than Rei, perhaps by ten years. Not because of age.Because of grief.Dominic stared at her."Rei?"The woman shook her head."Not yours."Rei felt her stomach twist."You're another version of me.""Yes.""From another world?"The woman looked toward the white-haired child."From the world where I made the choice."The little girl smiled."Hello, Mommy."The scarred Rei flinched.Rei stepped in front of Dominic."Don't call him that."The woman looked at her."You don't understand.""Then explain."The woman glanced toward the garden. At Hope.At Benjamin. At Elara and Seren. Then her eyes settled on the little girl who stood beside Mara.Lena.Her expression crumpled."I chose her."Rei stared."What?""I chose Seren.

The ground beneath the garden opened. Not like a crack.Like an eye.A vast circle of darkness appeared beneath the grass, surrounded by rings of silver light. The trees bent toward it. The stone house groaned, and every window shattered at once.People screamed.Children cried. The newly arrived families scattered as the ground shifted beneath their feet. But Rei couldn't move. She was staring at Hope. Her daughter stood at the edge of the glowing circle, one hand stretched toward the sky, the other reaching toward Lena. Both girls were surrounded by light.Hope's was silver.Lena's was black. And between them, something ancient was waking."Hope!" Dominic shouted. He struck the barrier again. It didn't move.Hope turned toward him."Dad!""I'm here!""Don't let him take her!"Dominic looked at Lena."I won't!"The man called Aurel watched them with a strange expression."You see?" he said softly. "This is what I wanted to understand."Rei turned on him."You are going to stop this."

  • Marked by the Alpha Captain   The Man Who Made the Choice

The floor split beneath them.A jagged line of silver light tore through the nursery, dividing the cradles into two uneven rows. The wooden frames rattled, and the lights inside them flickered violently.Dominic grabbed Rei's hand."Move!"Rei barely heard him.Her eyes were fixed on Elias. Her father stood beside the open wooden box, still holding the letter. His face had gone pale, but he wasn't looking at the cracking floor. He was looking at the golden-eyed woman."What do you mean I was never supposed to remember?"The woman didn't answer immediately.Instead, she looked toward the ceiling."He's coming.""Who?" Mara demanded. The woman turned to her."The one who made the choice between your daughters."Mara shook her head."No. The First Alpha said—""The First Alpha wasn't there when it happened."The ancient man flinched.Echelon stepped forward."Then who was?"The golden-eyed woman looked at Elias."He was."Everyone turned.Elias slowly lowered the letter."That's impossib

  • Marked by the Alpha Captain   When Love Was Not Enough

The golden-eyed woman stood at the bottom of the shaft. She looked like Rei.Not the little girl who had emerged from the black cradle. Not the woman Rei had become after years of fighting for the right to choose her own life. This was something older. Her dark hair fell loosely around her shoulders, and her face carried the exhaustion of someone who had watched the same tragedy unfold so many times that even grief had become familiar. But her eyes were golden. The first version. The one who had wished herself out of existence. The one who had started the first world.Rei stared at her."You said you made the first choice.""I did.""Then tell me what happened."The woman glanced toward the cradles."I wanted to be loved."The answer was so simple that Rei almost didn't understand it.The golden-eyed woman continued."I wanted someone to look at me and decide that I was worth keeping. I wanted my mother to hold me without looking frightened. I wanted my brother to stay. I wanted the w
