CELLA'S POV

The venue was a mansion on the outskirts of the city.

Aeden drove us there in a sleek black car, his fingers tapping restlessly on the steering wheel, his jaw tight with tension I'd never seen before.

"You're nervous," I said.

"I'm not nervous."

"Your knuckles are white."

He glanced down at his hands, then forced them to relax. "I don't want to overwhelm you."

"I've been through worse."

"That's not reassuring."

I almost smiled. Almost.

The mansion loomed ahead of us, all glass and s

AEDENI turned. She was still on the rug. The silver was going out of her skin. It left in a slow, bright, wavering stream, like sap running out of a cut bough, and where it left, she was only a woman, thin, grey, and old in the face. Her hand lay open on the shawl. The knife had fallen from it."You were always going to be late, Aeden," she said, and there was no cruelty in it, only a great and gentle weariness. "I am not angry. I wanted you to know. It would have made no difference if you had come an hour sooner.""Crystal.""Burn it." She was looking at the shawl. "All of it. Do not bury it. It must not have anything left to hold." Her eyes came up to mine, and they were wet. "And do not let her wake and find it. Not like this. Promise me that."I do not know what I promised. I know that I opened my mouth. I know that the door behind me burst in under the weight of a dozen of her father's men, and that someone had me by the hair and someone had my arms, and that the last thing I sa

  • Marked by the forbidden mate   Chapter 69: The First Stroke

AEDENI do not remember crossing the yard.I remember the practice stick lying where the boy dropped it, still rocking a little in the wet. I remember the gate bell going on and on in the stone, and the last of the gold light sliding off the flagstones like water off a tilted tray. Then Cella is standing in front of me with a grey-sealed paper in her hand, at the full width of a room, and Darian has come to stand at my shoulder as the council ordered, within arm's reach of us both. She wears the look I have learned to dread. It is the look of someone about to be kind."Tell me quickly," I say. "I would rather have it quick."She reads it aloud. She does not soften a word of it, and I am grateful. The envoys will come a day early. Alpha Ardentis comes in his own person, with his household. And the Lady Crystal Ardentis, who has been returned to his protection after a long illness, and who has given testimony touching the vision of the man Virell.Darian does not move. It is a particula

  • Marked by the forbidden mate   Chapter 68: Three Days of Bread

CELLAThe dough has been sitting under its cloth for an hour and a half, and Tamsin the cook has now twice asked whether I mean to bake it or christen it."Bake it," I say, and punch it down with more force than it deserves. It sighs under my fist, a warm, yeasty breath, and the kitchen smells of flour and woodsmoke and the faint sourness of the crock by the window. It is the first morning in a long while that I have woken without something sitting on my chest. I am not fooled by that. The knowledge of last night lies folded small and cold at the back of my mind, with the rest of what I do not mean to look at yet. But the dough is warm, and my hands know what to do with it, and for the moment that is enough. They gave us three days.I keep turning it over as I work. The council sat at sunrise, as I had said they would, with the light coming in grey and sullen through the tall windows and the floor of the hall still dark where the meltwater had been mopped. I stood before them and refu

  • Marked by the forbidden mate   CHAPTER 67: THE HOT

CELLASomething hot and furious goes up through my chest, and I do not remember rising, only that I am on my knees with both fists against the wood and my voice has come out ragged. "You told me you wanted to be asked. I said I wanted the same. And the first thing you do, with all of this behind us, is decide on my behalf which prison I would rather live in.""It isn't a prison, it's...""Do not tell me what it is. I have lived in the other kind. I know the architecture." I take a breath that shakes. "I will not be moved out of the way, Aeden. Not by my father. Not by you. I do not know what you are becoming. I do not know what it is that listens when you sleep. But I know what I have seen. I have seen you stand in a yard with the blood of a dozen things on you and look at a boy as though you were afraid of him, and I do not flinch from that. I never will. So do not ask me to."For a long moment there is only the sound of his breath on the other side of the wood."Cella.""Count.""Ce

  • Marked by the forbidden mate   Chapter 66: The Count

CELLAThe fourth stroke of the bell is still shivering in the floorboards when Aeden's head knocks softly against the other side of my door.I am sitting on the floor with my back to the wood and my knees drawn up under my nightgown, and the sound comes through the panel into my spine, a small dull tap, like a man nodding off in a chair. The candle on the sill has burned down to a thumb's width of tallow. Under the door, along the gap at my feet, a cold air is seeping into the room, and it smells of snow, which is wrong, because it has been a mild autumn and the yard was dry as bone when I crossed it."Aeden."Nothing. Only his breathing, slow and long and deepening."Aeden." I turn and put my palm flat against the wood, and the cold bites through it, the clean, stinging cold of a handprint of frost laid on the other side at the height of a man's chest. "Answer me.""Mm." It is hardly a word. "I'm here.""You are not. Say something that takes effort.""Lady Cella." It is Darian's voic

AEDEN"I have heard you tonight." Her voice shakes, and steadies. "I heard you at my door ten minutes ago. It had your voice and your hesitations and the very catch you get on my name. It called me love. Don't tell me what you remember, Aeden. It remembers it too. It has been living in the same house as you for a week." A breath. "Tell me what you haven't told anyone."Behind me, I feel Darian go still."There are people here," I say."I know. I can hear them breathe." No pity in it, and no cruelty either, only a terrible, steady gentleness. "Tell me anyway. It could not say the true thing. It would not know how. It wants me to open this door, and the truth is the one thing that would keep it shut."I close my eyes.I think of every way I could do this. I could give her half. I could give her the shape of it with the edges sanded down, a confession fit for a council. I could give her the thing Simon already guesses. Every one of those is a lie I would be telling in front of witnesses,

  • Marked by the forbidden mate   Chapter 6: The Voice

CELLA'S POV"I reject the bond." My voice shook, but I forced myself to continue. "I reject you as my mate. I refuse to be tied to an omega. I refuse to accept this... this fate."The bond pulled at my chest, screaming in protest. Sable howled inside my mind, her claws raking against my ribs until
