ELLA

The station buzzed with noise as people moved from one place to another, said goodbye to family and friends, and tried to get last-minute tickets.

One man was carried out of the station by security personnel for causing a scene when he couldn’t get a ticket.

He had tried to sneak onto one of the buses but was caught and thrown out. When he pleaded his case, they threatened to call the cops, and that was the cue I needed to get out of there as soon as possible.

The last thing I wanted was law enforcement sniffing around in case one of them recognized me and sent me back before I was ready to return.

“Are you still mad at me?” Quincy asked as we stepped onto the bus.

I gave him a puzzled look, then moved my gaze to the lady asking for our tickets so she could direct us to our seats.

I tried not to scowl at him. I wasn’t interested in having a conversation about our personal issues, and didn’t he have the sense to wait until we were seated or, better yet, out of earshot?

EllaI thought about everything he had said and considered the distance we had covered before getting to this point. He must’ve been really motivated to come all this way to achieve his goal—granted, he came in his wolf form, which was faster than all the bus hopping we had been doing for the last few days.Still, it was quite the distance. Exerting vengeance on the pack must’ve been the ultimate inspiration, and I wondered if there was more to this story than what he was telling me.I didn’t want to push for any more explanations—probing meant that I had to indulge him in a conversation, and I wasn’t interested in doing any of that right now.He had come all this way for a noble cause and hadn’t achieved it. Would his pack receive him with joy knowing he hadn’t done what he set out to do but came home with a stranger instead?“That would be a sight to see,” I mumbled and sighed. For once, I would like a day where I wasn’t thinking about a number of things and was just existing—but th

  • Marked for Ruin: The Alphas’ Rejected Mate   VOYAGERS

VOYAGERSThe Harpers were a clan of travelers. Unlike other packs who preferred to remain rooted in a single territory, these wolves loved to move from one place to another.Their journeys through various regions exposed them to the cultures of the people they met and taught them how to be accommodating and open-minded.They learned to treat others with empathy and took care of everyone who crossed their path. Although they were not always treated kindly in return, they never let that change who they were.Above all, they kept their identity as werewolves a closely guarded secret. They hunted only animals, never humans, and always returned to La Derte at the end of the year to celebrate a successful period of knowledge-seeking.During the full moon, they would share everything they had learned with the young wolves who were not yet old enough to travel. The clan lived peacefully among themselves. On one of these journeys, they stumbled upon a new clan—one they had never encountered be

ELLAIt had gone from where they stood to widening across to where I stood, wrapping around the trees as well. That was the point I couldn’t walk past. I began to wonder what it meant, but more cracks formed in the ice, and I decided to leave any serious thinking for later.First, I had to get out of here, and fast, or I’d fall into the river when the ice thinned. The wind picked up, and I started to feel the cold even beneath my fur. If I needed a cue to leave as soon as possible, this was it. But first, I had to find a way.“Wake up, Ella, open your eyes for goodness’ sake!” I groaned in frustration, but the only thing that changed was my form.I had shifted from werewolf to human, which I considered a good thing. My weight on the thin ice was significantly reduced, but I was still stuck in the past, and I was still under the trees.I looked around and chuckled to myself. It was hilarious that the people who could’ve possibly helped me had left without a word.To think I’d assumed t

ELLAI felt the ice shift beneath my paws the moment the connection clicked. All four wolves turned to look in my direction, but only my relatives wore smiles. It was like they knew I had finally realized who they were—and they were just as happy to see me as I was to see them.I never got to see my extended family growing up. My parents were around for a while before we were attacked, but that was it. Anyone else I might have known or stayed in contact with was long gone. So this felt like a long-overdue reunion. My only regret was that I wouldn’t be able to ask all the questions I’d kept buried for years, or stay here as long as I wanted—just soaking in their presence. I decided to cherish every second I had. Maybe this was the universe’s way of giving me closure for all I’d lost. Or maybe it was something more important—something I needed to pay attention to.“How ironic,” Sydney said, chuckling softly. “We would do anything to have strength like yours. Our pack has become a target

ELLAWith that, I walked toward the closet, picked up my clothes, and headed for the bathroom. At this point, I didn’t want to think or speak anymore. I simply wanted to feel the calming effect of being in the tub and stay there until I was relaxed.Hopefully, Quincy would be asleep by the time I got out. This was the first time we were having a misunderstanding, and I wasn’t sure I could even call it an argument.I hadn’t given it room to fester or turn into something that would set off a heated exchange. I genuinely wasn’t interested in exchanging words with anyone else—I had done enough of that during that unwelcome visitation—and I preferred to enjoy some silence instead.I got into the tub and closed my eyes as the water touched my skin. For the first time that evening, I finally had peace and quiet. I sighed in relief and tried not to think about the conversation Kade and I had, but there was only so much I could do to stop my mind from wandering in that direction.I still felt

ELLAI knew he was disappointed that I had been drinking and planned to come back to the motel alone, but I didn’t care anymore. I had endured enough of everyone telling me about my choices and stating what I could or couldn’t do.Yes, I was drinking, and I definitely planned to go home on my own. What then? Is doing that something new? If I needed help, I would find a way around the situation.I was so used to doing things alone that having someone beside me, constantly berating me about my choices, was aggravating. If anything, I had enough reason to be agitated and didn’t need anyone to add to that list. It was beginning to annoy me that this night had taken a turn I didn’t anticipate. If I knew things would turn out this way, I would’ve stayed back at the motel and endured Quincy’s gentle snores. But then, who knows how that would’ve gone? What if Kade showed up at the motel? He had zero issues about approaching me in the pub, and I knew he wouldn’t care for discretion. If it mean

ELLAI watched him finally leave and exhaled a relieved sigh. He was finally out of here, and the repulsive feeling that had been growing inside me with every minute we spent together was slowly dissipating with each step he took, pushing him further away from me.Now that he had gone, I could finally gather my thoughts and feel all the emotions rushing through me, instead of just anger and irritation. I hadn’t fully processed how I felt when I first realized it was him sitting next to me, but now I understood it was a mix of excitement and anxiety.I wasn’t expecting him to be here, and even if I had considered the slim chance that he might come looking for me, I didn’t think it would happen so soon. That showed me it was important to him—more significant than he was willing to admit.Afterward, I felt helpless. When the bartender couldn’t tell I was trying to communicate a distress signal, and I didn’t find anyone in the crowd who seemed interested enough to come to my aid, I knew I

  • Marked for Ruin: The Alphas’ Rejected Mate   Kade

KADEI had given that answer because I wasn’t about to explain to her that the night I first felt her presence in my mind, I was having a conversation no one else needed to know about.I had to be sure she hadn’t heard anything she wasn’t supposed to—anything that might throw a wrench into my plans. Everything was already going wrong on that end. I didn’t need extra problems.Nothing she had said so far was convincing. Perhaps it was my cynicism at play, or maybe I just couldn’t bring myself to believe her because I felt like someone had been listening in on the conversation when it happened. But then again, how could I be certain she heard anything if she had continuously denied it?The only way to tell if she was lying or not would be to wait and see what came after this. Hopefully, it didn’t involve me sitting at a detective’s desk writing a statement.“If that’s the case, I’ve answered your question. I hope you have no more, because you need to be on your way now,” she said. Her v
