Chapter 9

Author: Stars
Matteo's POV

I was reviewing documents in my study when my phone suddenly chimed with a message notification.

Sabrina snatched my phone away before I could reach for it. She smiled sweetly at me and said, "Let me check it for you."

I sighed at her mischief, but I could not bring myself to stop her. She unlocked my phone with practiced ease, but the moment she glanced at the screen, her smile froze.

A flicker of disdain flashed in her eyes.

I frowned and asked, "What message is it?"

She snapped out of her daze at the sound of my voice and instantly put on a cheerful expression again.

"Nothing. It was just a spam text. My phone's dead, so can I borrow yours to play with for a bit?"

I agreed, not knowing that my decision would haunt me for the rest of my life.

"Let me know immediately if there are any work messages," I said to Sabrina, who was lounging on the couch, as I put down my documents.

Sabrina agreed on the surface, then turned around and deleted the collaboration documents that other Alphas had sent over.

After doing all of that, she changed into a silk nightgown and tiptoed behind me, wrapping her arms around me.

Her rose-scented pheromones stirred something in me, and I put down my pen, turning to embrace her.

"Forget about work and spend time with me, okay?" she asked.

Her body pressed against mine, teasing me in slow, deliberate motions that made my heart race. My throat went dry, and before I knew it, I had lifted her into my arms and carried her to the bedroom.

We spent a blissful night together.

The next morning, I was still half-asleep when my phone started ringing incessantly. I tried to ignore it, but it would not stop.

Annoyed, I glanced at the woman sleeping in my arms and forced down my irritation as I answered the call. "What is it? Don't you know it's the weekend?"

I deliberately kept my voice low so I would not wake Sabrina, though the impatience still leaked through.

On the other end was my secretary, Grace Cohen.

She answered in a panicked tone, "I sent you an email yesterday. The Alphas from the three major packs are coming to discuss a partnership with you today. All three of them are already in the VIP room waiting for you."

My drowsiness vanished instantly. "Email? I never got any email!"

I hurriedly grabbed my clothes and walked barefoot across the floor. "Where's Alyssa? Why didn't she notify me? Doesn't she know this meeting is important? Get her to come pick me up right away. Also, dock her pay this month for leaving her post without permission."

I walked downstairs furiously, thinking Alyssa must still be mad at me and was ignoring the pack's interests over that small matter. It seemed I had been too lenient with her.

However, Grace went silent for a long time before carefully replying, "Alpha, Alyssa has already resigned."

I stumbled and nearly fell down the stairs. Those words hit me like a bolt from the blue, leaving me frozen in place.

"When did she resign? Did I approve it? Contact Alyssa immediately and tell her to come back now."

I did not realize my voice was too loud and had woken Sabrina, who was sleeping upstairs.

I could not believe that Alyssa had actually resigned. Was it really over that small matter?

She clearly knew I loved Sabrina, and I had already compensated her for all the hurt she had suffered.

What more did she want?

I gripped my phone tightly, unable to suppress the fury in my heart.

On the other end, Grace seemed terrified by my reaction and did not dare to speak for a long time.

Just as I was about to continue asking about Alyssa's whereabouts, a pair of slender arms wrapped around my waist.

"What's going on? You woke me up," Sabrina murmured softly, resting her head against my back.

Most of my anger instantly subsided, and I did not press the matter further. "Just a minor work issue. It's nothing."

I picked up Sabrina and carried her back to the bedroom. I planned to go to the office first since I could not afford to offend the Alphas from the three major packs. However, as soon as I lay her on the bed, she wrapped her arms around my neck and kept acting coy.

"I don't want you to leave. Stay here with me, please."

She nuzzled my neck like a kitten, her delicate manner making my throat tighten. I could not resist pulling her back into my arms.

It was not until half an hour later, after she had fallen asleep, that I picked up my phone. By then, my phone was full of missed calls from Grace.

My expression darkened as I sent a message to her.

[Reschedule today's meeting for this afternoon.]

Soon, my phone showed Grace's reply.

[Alpha, they've already left. They said there won't be any future cooperation.]

My heart sank, and I suddenly remembered that Grace had said she had sent me an email. I opened my phone, but there were no new emails.

Then, I recalled that Sabrina had been using my phone all last night.

I could not help but feel suspicious. I clicked on the trash folder, and my eyes widened, and the color drained from my face.

It had been a year since I last saw Alyssa.During that time, I threw myself into running my pack, keeping busy so I would not have time to think about her.I thought time would heal everything, but when I opened her Twitter account and saw her glowing in a wedding dress under the sun, my heart still ached painfully.[You're all welcome to join my marking ceremony.]The pen in my hand slipped as I read the caption, leaving a large ink stain on the paper. Her Twitter account was the only place I could find out how she was doing. Clearly, she was doing just fine without me.Penelope had also seen the post and excitedly bragged, "Alyssa even invited me to be her bridesmaid! I heard her fiance is tall, handsome, and really gentle..."She rambled on while my head buzzed, making it impossible to hear the rest.I muttered under my breath, "She's having a marking ceremony so soon."Throughout the year, Penelope had occasionally given me updates about Alyssa. She had a boyfriend in her

When I arrived at the Wildlands, I found Sabrina barely recognizable. The place was overrun by rogues, and for a weak woman like her, she had no choice but to sell her body to survive. She was a shadow of her former self, chained by the ankles and trembling in a corner. When Sabrina saw me, she was already half out of her mind, staring at me for a long time before snapping awake like from a dream. Then, she crawled desperately to my feet like I was her last lifeline."Matteo, I was wrong... Please just let me go. If you get me out of here, I promise I'll never bother you and Alyssa again."When I remained unmoved, she burst into tears, trying to use them to win my sympathy."They've all been abusing me while you were gone. You can't imagine what my life has been like. After all these years together, you can't treat me this way."I stared silently at her face.I used to be obsessed with her, but she had lost all her innocence and beauty, leaving only madness and greed. It was b

Not long after, Penelope returned. The moment the two old friends saw each other, they fell into a long, tight hug."Penelope, you're here," Alyssa said softly. After a few words of pleasantries, Penelope turned to face me and gave Alyssa an apologetic smile."I know you didn't want to see Matteo, but I still let him come find you. I'm really sorry for disturbing your peace."Alyssa smiled. "It's not your fault. We did need a chance to end things once and for all, so you actually helped me out."Penelope pressed her lips together before finally asking Alyssa the question she had been wanting to ask."If Sabrina had never come back, would you have chosen to stay with Matteo?"I lifted my head slightly, waiting for her answer."No," Alyssa answered decisively without a moment's hesitation. The answer was what I had expected. If we went back to before Sabrina returned, I had not yet experienced the pain of loss and did not understand what love meant.Hence, even without Sabrina

I did not know how long I stayed at the coffee shop. It was not until midnight, and the staff started closing up, that I was finally asked to leave. The streets at night were eerily quiet, with only a handful of people still wandering around. My heart felt completely hollow. I could not help thinking about how ridiculous I had been all those years.I had devoted all my time and energy to a woman who did not deserve my love while ignoring the one who actually loved me.Alyssa had once given me her whole heart, but I was too blind to see it. If only I had recognized my own feelings sooner and stepped in when Sabrina was bullying her.If only I had not let Alyssa down.Nonetheless, it was too late for any of that.I sat dejectedly on the curb by the side of the road. As if the universe wanted to mock me further, lightning flashed across the sky and rain began pouring down, sending everyone on the street running for cover. The downpour beat mercilessly against my body, and I felt l

The moment I got off the plane, I rushed straight to the coffee shop where Alyssa and I had agreed to meet. Just thinking about finally seeing her again after so long made me restless with excitement.I waited anxiously, and when I heard the door chime ring, I looked up to see Alyssa walking in with her bag.She had changed so much in the month we had been apart. She would always wear her business suits, her hair tied neatly in a bun, her face calm and distant, as if she were forever on duty.Instead, she wore a light green floral dress, her hair flowing loosely over her shoulders, her expression soft and unguarded. For a moment, it felt like I was back in college, meeting that shy, innocent version of her all over again. I was completely stunned, forgetting to even stand up to greet her.Alyssa set her bag down and sat across from me."Go ahead. What do you want from me, Matteo?"I snapped back to reality and gave her an awkward smile."Alyssa, it's been too long."I fought

Penelope called Alyssa, and I stood nervously to the side waiting for her to answer. Those brief 30 seconds felt like decades passing by.Finally, the call connected, and Alyssa's voice came through from the other end."Hello, Penelope."Hearing the voice of the person I had been longing for, I tried hard to resist the urge to rush forward and snatch Penelope's phone, waiting anxiously instead.Penelope explained why she was calling, and my heart felt like it was about to leap out of my chest.Alyssa was silent for a moment before saying, "Okay, I'll see him one last time."Those few simple words gave me hope. Since Alyssa was still willing to see me, that meant there was still a chance for us.I immediately booked the earliest available flight and was about to leave when Penelope stopped me.She said, "Matteo, you don't look too good. You probably haven't rested in a long time, right? Why don't you get some sleep first? Alyssa already agreed, so she won't stand you up."I did
