Chapter 3

Author: Jojo
The girl looked to be around 17 or 18 years old. Her body trembled uncontrollably with fear, yet she refused to move an inch.

It was Emma Maguire, Eloise's little sister.

Eloise struggled to sit up. "Emma, what are you doing here?"

A glint of tears appeared in Emma's eyes as she rolled up her sleeve. "Dad was going to beat me to death. I had no choice but to run…"

Eloise's breath hitched when she saw the bruises and wounds covering Emma's arm.

Despite taking such a brutal beating without begging for mercy, Eloise now lowered her head to Julia. "Julia, you can punish me however you want later. My sister's exhausted. Please let me take her upstairs so she can rest."

Before Julia could respond, Zander spoke, "Outsiders aren't allowed to stay overnight here. Someone, take Ms. Emma home."

"Didn't you hear what she just said? If she goes back home, they'll beat her to death!"

Eloise's eyes immediately reddened as she clung tightly to Emma's hand.

Zander couldn't understand why Eloise, who had always been so obedient, was defying him again. His brows furrowed. "Rules are rules. If you refuse to send her back, you can stay out here with her."

With a wave of his hand, Zander ordered the housekeeper to shut the doors, leaving the sisters outside.

A deafening crack of thunder sounded overhead. Dark clouds swallowed the sky as torrential rain poured down.

Emma panicked and rushed to the door, pounding on it desperately. "I'll go back! I won't stay here! Eloise is still injured! Please, let her inside…"

Eloise tried to stop her, but the sudden movement tore her wound open again.

"You can't go back!" she cried out as a sharp pain shot through her body.

Emma had no choice but to help Eloise into a sheltered corner. They huddled together, shivering in their thin clothes as the wind howled and rain poured around them. They spent the entire night out in the cold.

At daybreak, Eloise watched as a young man knocked on the Pierson residence's door. "Zander, I'm here to see Julia! Can I stay here tonight?"

Zander personally welcomed him. "Of course. You can stay as long as you like."

"You're the best, Zander!"

"You're Julia's brother, which makes you my brother, too. Of course I've got you covered…"

Not once did Zander look at Eloise.

Eloise parted her dry lips, her voice barely more than a rasp. "Water…"

Emma touched Eloise's forehead and immediately felt how hot she was. "Hang in there, Eloise…"

In her feverish haze, Eloise vaguely remembered Emma leaving for a while. When she came back, she helped Eloise take some medicine with water. The cool water soothed her parched throat, and she swallowed the pills without thinking.

Slowly, the medicine began to take effect. When Eloise finally managed to open her eyes, she saw Julia storming toward her with Zander. "See? I told you they were the ones who stole the medicine!"

She turned to Elosie. "Eloise, if you needed medicine, you could've just asked. Why are you stealing again?"

Emma was about to speak, but Eloise hurriedly cut her off, "It was my fault. I'll take the punishment."

"Eloise, but it was me…"

Eloise shot her a stern look. It was so firm that Emma fell silent, too afraid to say another word.

Disappointment filled Zander's eyes. "First, you stole money from your own family. Then, you stole money from the Piersons. And now, you're teaching your own sister to steal and covering for her?

"Eloise, take a good look at yourself. Is this how you're supposed to behave as my wife?"

Eloise's head snapped up. She stared at him, stunned.

Back then, she had given him everything she had out of love, even handing over the entire inheritance her mother had left her to help him.

And this was how he saw her?

Zander flinched at the look in her eyes. He turned to the bodyguards. "What are you waiting for? She said she'll take the punishment."

Emma cried out in panic, but Neil Cole, the Pierson family's butler, shoved her aside and dragged Eloise down to the basement.

The moment Eloise saw the electric chair inside, fear finally hit her. "What are you going to do to me?"

A few years ago, Eloise and Julia had both been abducted by the Pierson family's enemies. Zander had rescued Julia first, leaving Eloise strapped to an electric chair, where she was tortured until she broke down and developed PTSD.

This was the one thing she feared more than anything.

Eloise tried to run, but someone grabbed her and dragged her back, strapping her into the electric chair.

Neil flipped the switch. Electricity ripped through her body like a blade.

Eloise threw her head back and screamed. Her body convulsed violently as the restraints dug into her flesh. The sickening smell of burning skin filled the room.

It hurt. It hurt like hell.

She remembered all those nights when nightmares about her abductors had jolted her awake.

Zander would always look guilty then, pulling her into his arms and whispering, "I'm sorry. I should've protected you. I'll never let you be put in danger like that again."

And now, he was the one sending her straight back into hell.

Eloise couldn't hold on any longer. Her consciousness began to fade.

Just before she blacked out, she saw Zander rush into the basement. He kicked Neil hard in the chest and shouted, his voice unusually frantic, "Who told you to use this thing?"

Conrad, who was usually cool and composed, put on a pitiful look. "Eloise, you didn't patch me up this aggressively before."She used to be gentle and careful. This time, she was downright ruthless. Eloise huffed. "Well, maybe you shouldn't have picked a fight. Does everything really have to be settled with your fists?""He wouldn't leave unless I fought him." Conrad glanced out the window. Zander was already gone. "He probably won't bother you anymore."Eloise's heart softened, and she became gentler as she continued treating his wounds. "I know I've said this a lot, but I still have to say it again. Thank you.""Thank you for coming into my life and saving me. Not just this time, but years ago, too," she added inwardly.Conrad understood what she left unsaid, and his expression softened. "Then, can I ask for something in return?""What do you want me to do?""Give me a chance to pursue you…"Sunlight spilled over the two of them. Nearby, several staff happily huddled togeth

Zander and Conrad got into a fight. It wasn't nearly as brutal as Eloise had expected. They'd both trained in martial arts since childhood, and neither had an edge over the other.Realizing they could keep going all day without settling anything, they finally stopped and caught their breath. They were both bruised and bleeding, but the hostility in their eyes hadn't faded one bit.Zander let out a cold laugh and spoke first, saying, "Conrad, I thought we were friends. How could you go after my wife?"Conrad almost laughed. "She hasn't been your wife for a long time."He continued, "Once I found out she married you, I stopped paying attention to anything happening in Jaine. I didn't even want to go back to my family because I was afraid I'd interfere with your marriage."But look at what you did to her. Do you have any idea what state she was in when I found her?"Zander was speechless for a moment. "I was wrong about what happened before. I'll make it up to her.""She doesn't lo

Conrad took Eloise away.Zander didn't stop them. He just stared after them, watching until they disappeared from sight.Once they got to Eloise's place, she took some more medication and gradually calmed down. Still shaken, she said, "Thank you, Conrad…""No need to thank me." Conrad sounded casual as he asked, "Do you think Zander might come bother you again? Maybe you should move in with me for a while."Seeing the strange look in her eyes, he quickly added, "I have plenty of spare rooms. I just mean… I'm worried something might happen to you."Eloise smiled. "I know you don't mean any harm, but I'd rather not trouble you. Zander is actually a very proud man. After I rejected him that bluntly and after my emotional outburst… he probably won't bother me again."Conrad seemed like he wanted to say something, but in the end, he kept quiet. And for the next few days, Zander didn't show up again. But Eloise still couldn't shake the feeling that someone was watching her. "Why not?! I'll make up for every mistake I made. Julia hurt you, and I made sure she paid the price! Is it because of Emma? But Eloise, I didn't kill her. You can't blame me for what happened to her…" Zander said.Eloise let out a bitter laugh. "Do you have any idea what my life was like in your family?"Zander fell silent."I had to get up before dawn every day to tend to your family, only to be picked on by your mother and Julia."Julia refused to give me any money. I couldn't even afford to get an abortion."Do you know why we lost our baby? Because you forced me to drink the tonic Julia gave me. After I drank it, our baby was severely deformed. I had no choice but to…"This was the first time Zander had ever heard about it.So Eloise… hadn't deliberately neglected their baby? His eyes reddened. "I'm sorry, Eloise. I didn't know… But it's all in the past now. I'll change. I promise."Eloise shook her head. "Our baby is gone, and you can't bring them back. Changing now doe

For a while afterward, Eloise's visits to her therapist became much less frequent. She was visibly doing better, and the injury to her hand was slowly healing. Following Conrad's advice, she opened a flower shop. When she had time, she tended to the flowers and picked up some translation work online. She wasn't short on money, but there was something deeply satisfying about having a simple, peaceful routine of her own. The shadows of her past seemed to be fading little by little. Whenever she felt down, she would drag Conrad out for barbecue.Watching a ridiculously handsome man eat barbecue while repeatedly reminding her not to drink was somehow enough to make her troubles disappear. The only downside was that whenever she went out, she couldn't shake the feeling that someone was watching her. The gaze felt lingering, almost reluctant, as if whoever was watching her couldn't quite let her go.It made her uneasy, but no matter how hard she looked, she could never pinpoint the so

The next morning, sunlight streamed through the windows, spilling across the king-size bed.Eloise's brows furrowed with cold sweat beading on her forehead. A few seconds later, she suddenly jolted awake and sat upright. She was breathing hard, her chest rising and falling rapidly, a trace of confusion still lingering in her eyes. Conrad heard the commotion and called from outside the door, "What's wrong?"Eloise looked like she'd just been jolted awake from a nightmare. "Nothing. P… Please, come in. Where am I?"She looked around the unfamiliar yet luxurious room, then down at the clean pajamas she was wearing. She was completely bewildered. Then, she looked up and noticed the faint marks on Conrad's face.It looked like…Eloise's face instantly went bright red. She stumbled over her words. "You… I… We…"Conrad kept a straight face. "Yes. You got drunk and took advantage of me. So now you have to take responsibility."Eloise stared at him, completely dumbfounded.Suppressing
