Briony's POV

I woke up to voices already arguing two rooms away, low enough that they thought they were being quiet about it, and I was awake enough to know exactly who was in the room before I even sat up.

"An old remedy." Bettina's voice was flat, like she was trying the words out for size. "That's what we're telling people."

"Which remedy?" Kieran didn't sound convinced either.

"Doesn't matter which. Something rare. Something nobody in this pack's ever seen used before, so nobody can call me a liar for not having it lying around." A pause. "It's the only story that doesn't put a target on her back."

I pushed the door open before I decided to. "You're rewriting what happened to me and I'm not even in the room for it?"

Bettina didn't flinch, which told me she expected this. "You're in the room now."

"After you already picked the lie." I crossed my arms. "What happens when Faro wants to thank the healer who saved him and Bettina says it was some dusty root instead of me?"

"Then he thanks the wrong person, and you stay breathing." Kieran said it without looking up from the table, like it was obvious. "That's the trade. I'd take it every time."

"It's not your trade to make."

"It's my pack to protect."

"I'm part of your pack too, or did that stop being true the second it got inconvenient?" My voice came out sharper than I meant it, but I didn't take it back.

Bettina stepped between us before it turned into something worse. "Nobody's saying you don't matter, girl. We're saying the fewer people who know what you are, the fewer people who can sell that information for a price. You saw what happened at that door last night just as I did."

That shut me up faster than anything Kieran could've said. She was right.

"Fine." I sat down hard in the nearest chair. "But I'm not standing there smiling while you hand my miracle to a root that doesn't exist."

"You don't have to smile." Kieran finally looked at me. "You just have to stay quiet."

"Wonderful. My favorite thing to do."

The pack meeting happened an hour later in the main hall, and I stood at the back of it exactly where I was told to, watching Bettina spin her story out loud to a room full of people who'd been calling me the spare a week ago and were now looking at Faro like he'd been touched by something holy.

"An ash-root tincture," Bettina said, steady as anything, not a single crack in it. "Rare. I've only ever read about it. Took me half the night digging through old records to remember the mixture."

"Never heard of it," someone muttered.

"That's because it hasn't been used in this pack in three generations." Bettina didn't even blink. "Lucky for Faro I keep good records."

A few people nodded like that. Most of them didn't care how he lived, just that he had. Faro himself sat wrapped in a blanket near the front, grinning like a boy who'd gotten away with something, no idea at all that the truth had been carved out from under him and replaced with a lie built to protect somebody else.

I stared at the floor and let it happen.

Afterward, once the hall cleared out, Faro caught my arm on his way past. "Hey. Thanks for sitting with me through the worst of it. I know it wasn't your job."

"It was exactly my job." I forced something like a smile. "Glad you're okay, Faro."

He wandered off happily, thanking a root instead of me, and I stood there feeling smaller than I had in weeks, not because anyone had insulted me this time, but because nobody had said anything at all.

Kieran kept me in the healing house the rest of the day, officially because Bettina needed the extra hands, unofficially because he didn't want me anywhere near a pack that might start asking questions if they saw me too closely tied to Faro's recovery. I didn't argue. Arguing hadn't gotten me anywhere yet.

By afternoon Bettina sent me to the herb stores at the back of the building to restock what we burned through the night before willowbark, crushed root, the charcoal paste that hadn't been enough on its own. It was quiet back there, shelves stacked floor to ceiling, the kind of quiet that usually helped me think.

I was elbow-deep in a jar of dried yarrow when the door creaked shut behind me.

"Busy little healer." Petra's voice, unhurried, almost pleasant.

I turned fast. She was leaning against the closed door, arms crossed, that same smile she'd worn in the courtyard the day of the ceremony, the one that never quite reached her eyes.

"You're supposed to be on patrol rotation," I said.

"I'm supposed to do a lot of things." She pushed off the door and wandered further in, running one finger along the shelf like she was inspecting my work. "Funny story going around today. Ash-root tincture. Never seen it work that fast on a silver wound before. Never seen it work at all, actually. Nobody has."

My stomach dropped, but I kept my face still. "Bettina's dealt in rare remedies longer than either of us has been alive."

"Sure she has." Petra stopped a foot away, close enough that I could smell the cold morning air still clinging to her jacket. "Except I was standing in that doorway last night, sweetheart. Before Kieran or anybody else chased me off. I saw your hand. I saw what it did to that wound." Her smile widened just slightly. "Root didn't do that."

"I don't know what you think you saw."

"I know exactly what I saw." She tilted her head, studying me the way you study something you were deciding whether to sell or keep. "The real question is what it's worth to you that I keep quiet about it.”

Briony's POVKieran came back near midnight, boots caked in mud from the border trail, jaw tight enough that I knew before he said a word that whatever he found out there hadn't settled anything."Well?" I stood up from the chair I'd been waiting in, too keyed up to have actually slept."Multiple sets of tracks. Days' worth, maybe longer." He dropped into the chair across from me, rubbing a hand over his face. "Whoever came through that window last night wasn't the first one scouting that stretch of wall. They've been watching us for a while.""And Halric? What did he say before you got pulled away?"Something shifted in his expression, careful now. "He wrote the treaty clause himself. Forty years back. Pushed the council to leave it open to any Thistlewood daughter instead of naming one specifically."My stomach dropped. "He knew. About the bloodline.""Suspected. That's the word he used." Kieran leaned forward, elbows on his knees. "Said he'd been watching your family for decades, w

Kieran's POVHalric led me to his own quarters instead of the war room, which told me something before he even opened his mouth. He shut the door behind us and checked the hallway twice through the gap before he trusted it closed."You're making me nervous," I said."Good." He didn't sit. Paced instead, hands clasped behind his back, an old habit I have seen him do maybe three times in my life, all of them before delivering news he didn't want to deliver. "Because what I'm about to tell you should've come out a long time ago, and I've spent years telling myself it didn't matter. Last night proved me wrong.""Then tell me."He stopped pacing and looked at me straight on. "The treaty clause. The one demanding a Thistlewood daughter for the binding. I wrote that wording myself, forty years back, when I sat on the council that first drafted it."That stopped me cold. "You never mentioned that.""Because it wasn't something I was proud of admitting." His jaw worked. "The clause wasn't pack

Briony's POVBy morning I had four guards instead of one, stationed at my door, my window, and both ends of the hallway, and I hated every single one of them on principle even though none of it was their fault."This is ridiculous," I said, watching a fifth wolf get added to the rotation outside the healing house. "I can't walk to the well without an escort now.""You can't walk anywhere without an escort now." Kieran didn't look up from the notes he was reading, spread out across the war room table like they might rearrange themselves into an answer if he stared long enough. "Not after last night.""I threw a fully grown man through a window with my bare hands. I think I can handle a walk to the well.""You barely stayed on your feet doing it." He finally looked up. "You told me yourself. It didn't feel like healing. You don't know what it costs you yet, and neither do I, and I'm not betting your life on a power neither of us understands against wolves who came here specifically to t

Briony's POVI lay frozen, staring at the window, listening to that scrape work its way slower and more careful than any wind or branch could manage. My heart was going so hard I could feel it in my ears. The latch gave with a soft click. The window slid open an inch, then wider, cold air pouring in around a shape pulling itself over the sill, black-clothed, face covered, moving with the kind of quiet that only comes from practice. I didn't think. I didn't have time to think. My body just reacted, rolling off the far side of the bed as his boots hit the floor."Where is she…" His voice cut off the second he spotted me crouched against the wall.He lunged.I threw my hands up, not to fight, just to stop him, some desperate animal instinct screaming got back away from me and the mark on my palm exploded to life so fast it lit the whole room gold. It wasn't gentle. It wasn't the warm pull I felt healing Faro. This was raw, ugly force, a wall of pressure slamming into him mid-lunge and th

Briony's POV"Whose scent is it?" I asked, my voice lower than I meant it to come out.Kieran straightened, still staring at the doorframe like it might give him more if he looked hard enough. "Not fresh. A few hours old, maybe more. Faint enough that if I hadn't been standing right here I would've missed it completely.""But you know whose it is."His jaw ticked. "I have a guess.""Petra.""I said a guess." He said it fast, like he wanted to hold off naming her out loud until he was sure, but I could see it in his face, he already knew. "Get inside. Bolt the door. I'll send someone to sit outside your window tonight.""I don't need a babysitter.""You need somebody who isn't asleep when the next note gets passed." He didn't wait for me to argue further, already moving down the hall, the tracker jogging to keep pace with him.I went inside like he told me to. I bolted the door like he told me to. I did not, however, plan on staying quiet about any of it, and the second I heard his boo

Briony's POVI found Kieran in the war room going over patrol maps with two of his trackers, and I didn't wait for an invitation to interrupt."Petra passed a note to a man at the border market. He didn't smell like Ashvale. Didn't smell like anybody I've smelled before, actually."The trackers went still. Kieran's head came up slowly."Describe him.""Tall. Dark coat, no colors on him. Kept his face turned away from the crowd most of the time." I crossed my arms. "He took the note and disappeared before I could get a good look.""And Petra?""Told me I was imagining things. Then told me to be careful who I said that to."Kieran's jaw worked once. He turned to the older tracker, rattled off three names and a stretch of border to cover before nightfall, and the two men were gone within a minute, boots already moving down the hall."You should've come straight to me instead of confronting her," he said, once they were gone."I didn't confront her. She confronted me.""Same difference, i
