Stephanie’s pov

But I had to think carefully; my husband’s health was failing and before he would die I wanted him to see I had tried to make peace, and this wasn’t just about me. I had to protect my position in the family, even if it meant swallowing my pride.

I forced myself to take a deep breath. “Fine, Xander. If that’s what it takes, then I’ll do it.”

He raised an eyebrow, almost looking surprised. “You mean it?”

“Yes,” I snapped, trying to rein in my temper. “But don’t think for a second that I’m doing this for her. I’m doing this because I want peace with you. That’s all.”

He smirked, clearly enjoying my discomfort. “Whatever helps you sleep at night, Stephanie. Just know that Audrey’s the key to this whole thing. If you can’t make peace with her, then this so-called alliance of ours will be nothing more than words.”
