EDEN

Mum is finally asleep. She fought it for almost an hour. She’d continued stroking my hair, murmuring that everything would be okay, that we'd figure it out together, and that I was still her brave girl. But exhaustion won.

Her breathing slowed, her hand went slack on my arm, and now she's curled on her side facing me, her face soft in sleep.

I watch her chest rise and fall for a long minute.

Then I carefully slide out from under the covers.

My legs feel like they belong to

EDEN Hayden hasn't moved from the chair. His arms are still wrapped loosely around me, but every muscle in his body has gone rigid. I can feel the shift in his breathing. Astrid's eyes lock on him. They're glassy, wild, and so full of pain. "You were never even present," she croaks. "You didn't care about the baby. You didn't care that I was throwing up every morning, that I couldn't keep anything down, that I had to quit modelling because my body was changing and the agency dropped me like I was diseased. You didn't care that I cried myself to sleep wondering if you'd ever look at me the way you look at her." Hayden's hand tightens on my waist. I feel it. Raw guilt flashes across his face like lightning before he locks it down again. Astrid sees it too. She lets out a hollow laugh. "Look at you. Still pretending that you're innocent?" Hayden doesn't answer. She moves even closer, her body trembling. "I lost my baby because of you," she says again, her voice

EDEN "I didn't think you would show up with...popsicles," my husband says, his voice laced with subtle excitement. I can tell he's very, very happy to see me. I cover the distance between us, set my bag on his desk, and round the chair to his side. "Just wanted to surprise you." I slide onto his lap without asking, my legs draped sideways across his thighs, my arm looping loosely around his neck. He exhales like he's been holding his breath and wraps one arm around my waist, the other settling on my knee. I pull the popsicles out. The chocolate is already starting to melt at the edges. "Dark chocolate," I announce, holding his out. "Because you're dramatic and like things that taste expensive." He lets out a small laugh, takes it, and immediately bites off the tip. Chocolate smears the corner of his mouth. He doesn't wipe it. "Thank you," he whispers, his voice low. Then he lifts my free hand—the one not holding my own popsicle—and presses a soft kiss to my kn

HAYDEN Dr. Ellis's office smells the same as always. The faint smell of vanilla and chocolate, leather from the couch, and coffee from the mug she keeps forgetting on the side table. Normally the familiarity grounds me. Today it just makes the pounding behind my eyes worse. I'm sitting on the edge of the couch instead of leaning back like usual. My elbows rest on my knees, my fingers laced tight. The pills I took this morning—two extra-strength ibuprofen chased with black coffee—might as well have been sugar cubes. "…Hayden?” Dr Ellis's voice pulls me out of my head, and I look up to see her staring at me worriedly. “What’s wrong?” "Blinding headache. It started yesterday.” My voice sounds flat even to me. She sets her notepad aside completely. "What's wrong, Hayden?" I exhale through my nose. "The headache isn't helping, I guess." A small smile touches her mouth. "I meant beyond the headache." I rub my temple with two fingers. It doesn't help. She sta

  • Married To My Billionaire Nemesis   071: Tick. Tock.

EDEN I'm sitting behind my husband on the bed, my legs crossed in a lotus position a little while after our shower. Hayden is curled on his side, his head bowed so low that his hair curtains his face. The shower did ease the worst of the dizziness, but he's still trembling faintly. My hand moves in slow, steady circles over his bare back. Every time my palm glides over the raised bumps of old scars, I feel my throat tighten all over again. They're not neat little lines, they're messy and overlapping. I trace them without thinking. "Has the dizziness eased up?" I ask. He nods tiredly. I keep rubbing from his lower back up to the nape of his neck, then down again. His breathing is still strained, but it's steadier than it was ten minutes ago. He speaks after a long silence, his voice nearly inaudible. "Rachel must have given Dylan the video." I don't stop moving my hands. "Probably." He exhales through his nose. "I wonder what else he has." There's somet

  • Married To My Billionaire Nemesis   070: I Love You

EDEN The faint, rhythmic sound of something soft hitting the floor over and over reaches my ear as I head downstairs in search of Hayden. Guilt is tearing me apart on the inside. I follow the sounds carefully. The living room is dark except for the cold blue glow from the lamp. He's on the rug in front of the fireplace, curled into the smallest shape a grown man can make. His knees are pressed to his chest, his forearms locked around his head. His hands are clamped over his ears so hard that his knuckles are white. His breathing sounds painful. "Hayden?" My voice cracks. He doesn't respond or acknowledge me at all. I drop to my knees beside him. "Baby... hey... it's me." His rocking doesn't slow down. If anything, it gets faster and more desperate. My own panic rises in my throat. I reach for him slowly, my palms open. When my fingers brush his shoulder, he jerks, curling tighter and rocking harder. "Okay," I whisper, mostly to myself. "Okay. No sudden

EDEN The amusement park is loud and alive. I chose this one on purpose. Hayden hates the Ferris wheel. Always has, even back in high school. I remember a lot of things I wish I could forget. We left the island for this visit. The numbing cream I’d applied earlier still works. Yay, no m

HAYDEN "Because I can't stop wanting you.” The words tumble out of me before I can cage them. Her eyes widen with shock, fury, and something softer. "I never wanted the contract," I snarl, stepping closer until her back hits the wall. "But the second your father made that offer, I

HAYDEN My blood is roaring so loud, I can hardly hear the ocean. All I can focus on is her. Her defiant light brown eyes are blazing like she wants to set me on fire and dance in the ashes.“Because what?” she snaps. “Say it.”“Because I couldn’t let you go. Not after what happened. You are
